Terrific! For decades, I taught piano students how to hold hands, lower from above the keyboard with hands dangling limp and as each fingertip touches keytops, hold them there until thumb is touching. Swing wrists outward. Play with fingers from the knuckles, not the wrist and/or forearm. Here are your finger muscles, thumb muscle on top of the forearm, the rest below. Put your fingers over the muscle(s) and move your fingers. Feel the movement, on and on. It's this kind of basic information that is often overlooked in KZbin instructions. Put thumb behind neck between fingers 1 & 2. That may be natural anyway, but now we lay purpose to it. Very good, sir.

Just had my first lesson today with Steve. He is of course not only an amazingly talented musician, he is an excellent teacher! I am nearly a total noobie, and I left even more inspired and motivated to continue to learn and practice than before the lesson. I highly recommend him to any who wish to learn to play the bass!

When you play at the end the thumb of your right hand is on the e string not the pickup?
@TheBassSage
@TheBassSage 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when i'm playing on the A, D, and G strings, especially when playing the open A string in this case, I like to put my thumb on the E string to mute it with my right thumb. Eliminates any potential sound from the open E string.

It's about finding a place to anchor your thumb to give you rigidity in your attack on the strings. The more you play the more you will become comfortable with moving your anchor point based on which strings and they style of attack you want on the strings. Best position is where you can keep your fingers as straight as possible.

Yes!, Definitely good to get the pinky going in your practice. It may be tricky at first, but stick with it as it will help immensely with your playing.

Need to work on keeping my finger close to the strings?

Are you asking if you need to keep your fingers close to the fretboard? If so, then yes!

My index finger was injured decades ago and I had stitches on the meaty part. A week ago I started learning bass and I noticed that my index finger produces totally different (louder) sound than my middle finger, even when I play it soft. Is there anything I can do about it to equalize the tone and volume of my index and middle fingers? Should I wear a glove or something?
@TheBassSage
@TheBassSage 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Yeah maybe trying a glove on your plucking hand could help balance out the tone your producing. They make certain gloves for musicians as seen worn by some bassists. Certainly worth a shot. Good luck with your playing.

Thanks. I just tried using a cheap disposable nitrile glove, it works. :) Will use these until I find a source of Musician Gloves in EU (ordering it from USA with international shipping and all customs fees would cost 5 times the price of a single glove).

So, if I didn't have sausage fingers I'd have a lot easier time fretting notes on the bass. The universe is conspiring to keep me from becoming the next Jaco.

Keep working at it. You'd be surprised that your fingers can stretch out over time with practice. Also consider what kind of bass you are using as well. Different style basses use different nut width's (measurement of the nut) and this will affect how big or thick the neck you play is. Usually Precision style basses have a thicker 1.75" causing the neck to be bigger, Jazz basses use a 1.5" that some find easier to play and get around on and there are some smaller or in-between as well. (1.45", 1.63") There are also short scale basses where the neck will be smaller and frets will be closer together. I recommend checking out all different sizes/styles of basses to see what is most comfortable for you. What kind of bass are you currently playing?

@@TheBassSageThank you for taking the time to reply to my post. In retrospect, I think a short scale would have been better for me. My fingers are the right length for a size medium glove, but my hands are the right width for a size XL glove. The width of my hands makes up for the finger length, a bit, but not completely. Also, I have to play with my thumb in line with my index finger, or else it cramps badly. In the meantime, I'll keep working at it. I'm determined. Guess, I could drop tune my bass by a whole step and capo at the 2nd fret. I'd only be losing the 23rd and 24th frets. I don't play up there, anyway.

fortj3 Right on. Sure, experiment a bit and see what feels good. Not sure where you’re located, but if you get a chance to go play some different basses too, thats always good. Good luck.
