About 20 years ago, I had a motorcycle accident. After I healed up a bit, I figured playing a Bass would be good PT for my formerly broken hand. It worked great for my hand, for my playing, not so much. About a year later, my son "loaned" my Bass to a friend of his, and I haven't seen it since. Now that I'm retired, I got bit by the Bass Bug again. On a whim, I bought a used one online, sight unseen for $50, (identical to the "E-bay" Bass Josh played in his 5 cheap Bass Guitar video). Thanks to Josh, I've learned more about music and playing Bass Guitar in the past week than I ever have before. I was 14 when I had my first bass lesson (48 years ago!). The teacher told me, “Don’t memorize the fretboard, FEEL it.” I can’t tell you how much that stunted my progress as a bass player. And how embarrassing it was whenI first tried jamming with others! Your lessons are, hands down, the easiest on-ramp to playing the bass. Genius really. Even at my ripe age I’m learning a ton. Josh, just wanted to take the time to say that I really appreciate vids like this on youtube. I’ve been playing bass for almost 30 years. I know this theory almost too well to be able to explain it clearly to a student. Not sure that even makes sense? I am currently teaching the next generation...my son how to play. Your tutorial makes it very easy to understand the fundamentals and breaks it down in a simple and clean methodology for finding root notes, memorizing how sharp/ flat works and when and how to play these notes. I don’t really comment on KZbin, but I just felt compelled to share my experience here. I’m 22, just bought my first bass 2 days ago after a while of feeling an urge to play, loving the bass lines dearly in the songs I love and listen to most. I started guitar lessons in 2021, bought my electric and everything, it felt great and I did it for a few months, but I lost motivation to continue oddly enough… Tried picking it back up again a few weeks ago, but again wasn’t feeling it. Kept fighting the urge to play bass even though I’ve had such a desire to, due to various reasons, such as hearing from some people, “Learning guitar first before bass is essential,” which I found now isn’t necessarily true. Decided to take the leap of faith and try bass, and I am loving the sound so much already and feel so fulfilled. Your lessons help so freaking much for people who don’t have the opportunity (whether it be time or financial) to take in-person lessons from a teacher, like myself at the moment. You explain things so incredibly well, and I feel like a curious kid with a lot of wonder, watching this and being able to translate the keys on the piano to the fretboard. You’re an amazing teacher and your pacing and humor just adds to it, thank you so, so much for these videos (from myself and everyone else watching this pursuing bass for the first time!) Just recently decided to start playing music again, working on learning how to play guitar, but started playing bass at 15, 36 years ago. Played on & off(mostly off) since my 30's. Watched your are you an intermediate bass player, & when you mentioned money notes I was like damn, time to start from scratch. Your first lesson showed me my fretting fingers were out of position, but now you taught me the money notes & I'm finding a ton of excercises to correct them. Such as playing them in different keys(started with A on the 5th fret), & am forcing myself to learn the notes. Also found an excercise to practice micro moving instead of stretching, all on the G string to start with the money notes in A(E-D-C downwards), sounds like figaro. Helping me correct my fretting finger bending. You can teach an old dog new tricks, thank you.

When I was playing bass, I actually just got a chart that had all the notes on the fret board. I did not want to just learn tabs, 0 is not a note, I wanted to be a bit more educated about my instrument. But what you just showed on this video is a very smart way of learning music rather than just looking at a chart and seeing where the notes are and remembering. This is using music theory and knowing where notes are and why they are there. I really do appreciate you video here.

1:51 you're the only guy I know that starts with A when listing the notes. Everyone else starts with C. I guess your way is more logical, because the alphabet also starts with A

I think it is because C major is the go to starting scale as it has no flats/sharps which makes it easier for beginners

@@bonedragon7665 I'm 99.999999....% sure that you are correct... Which begs the question: What was the person (or people) that developed this system of notation thinking??? Assuming that the standard "A, B, C, D, E, F, G..." alphabet was in use at that time, if you started the whole notation system from scratch and merely called the starting note "A", instead of "C" (regardless of whatever pitch you decided to call "A", etc.), it would make more sense, to me at least. Then you could start with the default key/scale being named "A Major" ("A, B, C, D, E, F, G"). That seems a lot more logical than *starting* at "C" and then wrapping all the way back around to "A, B" for the final 2 notes. If this hypothetical sounds confusing, perhaps another way of putting this: Assume we kept the entire system exactly the same, and we have a standard piano, but we just *named* the "C" keys as "A" to begin with, so: C = A D = B E = C F = D G = E A = F B = G Same keys, same pitch, different names. The system that we use just seems so arbitrarily named . Sorry, I've been a musician for over 23 years, but I only have a basic understanding of music theory, which is sad... I have tattoos of clefs and notes... but anyway...
