In my life I was always creative and I would see a painting and I would go home and paint it! I knew I could do it or I would not have attempted it. But study art? No, not until years later. Now I'm studying all of it. I started focusing on watercolor. A lot to learn. But I have fallen in every single trap you have come across! I am now drawing and painting everyday in a sketchbook! Another way to dissipline and paint small because my paintings were always huge!

I’m 71 and just started watercolor. Always loved the look of watercolor. I’m a quilter ( and quilt teacher) at heart and create representational quilts which require sketching, but never really learned how to sketch what I see. So learning that too. Love your “ rules.” Was already following them, but painting small from beginning to end is something I will start doing. And BTW, I love your style. The ferry boat and the bridge behind you are wonderful. Thanks

Hi Kris - thank you so much for the tips! - I have been painting for almost a year, and am very drawn to detailed, botanical illustration. I have felt like I should be painting more loosely - that I won't be a "real" watercolorist if I cannot manage the loose style. You have just confirmed my desire to follow my bliss! and I thank you for that. I will still take lessons in the other style - just continue to learn about it - but I don't feel the need to HAVE to paint that way. I have also been watching a LOT of KZbin - sometimes out of fear of failure - so I can really identify with that. as well. Thank you for your honesty!

You're welcome. I encourage my students to both open themselves to new techniques and styles....but also find their own style. Painting is like your hand writing. No one can ever paint LIKE YOU! Brilliant! I'm a begining water color enthusiast and I'm guilty of going down the rabbit hole watching videos, buying books, right materials and not painting. So, yesterday, I just started painting 3 x 3 swatches of each of my tube paints and realized that I'm on my way to exploring this medium called water color painting. It's a start. Looking forward to my journey!

Kris! I thought you'd been doing this *for many years* and that you were a longtime teacher! You're such a natural at this I can't believe it's only been 2 years?! Thanks for sharing your story. I've always been into mixed media art, mainly leaning on oil pastel and acrylics, pen and ink, sometimes as 3D "folk art" objects. I've only recently decided to take a deep dive into watercolor and your videos have been a tremendous help! I love the idea of a sacred space for art. In a world that's all go-go-go and technology focused (*irony), having time to unwind until you reach a state of "flow" is incredibly healing. Watercolor makes me slow down and work with a loose hand. I agree with all of the suggestions for selective purchases + the best quality materials you can afford when starting out. My journey started with a Daniel Smith mixing set and a small Van Gogh 12 + 3 palette; Canson XL watercolor paper I had on hand for mixed media and the smallest block of high quality 100% cotton paper I could find; and a few (mid-price) Princeton Neptune brushes I had for other mediums. The Van Gogh set allowed me to play with abandon and I started incorporating the DS for different effects since they flow a little better. Learning to color mix and PLAY is so valuable. Starting out, I've found it helpful to have high quality paint and would suggest using only Van Gogh (student grade) and a "fancy" tube as a way to understand the difference in paint. Research the fancy tube's properties though. Do you want extra-fluid movement or granulating? Do you want to replace a "meh" shade in the Van Gogh set with a WOW version from another brand? Pigments and brands will vary, so no rush. I chose a tube of neutral tint because I need to work on value studies, so it seemed like a practical splurge. Now I am being choosy and adding single pigments only when the right sales appear, mostly Turner's or Marie's (both of those lines have pro grade that's pretty good) and only the occasional high end shade as my little pans run out. I decided on high quality synthetic rounds at this stage, a high quality quill, and to stick with my existing high quality golden talkaons for detailing. Maybe I'll add a reputable kolinsky sable or two later, in small sizes? There are excellent blogs for seeing paper swatches and with the help of amazing KZbinr's like you, Kris, it makes it easier decide what to add and what to skip with colors and materials. Thanks!

Omg... This is precisely.. step by step, in same sequence too.. is my journey too.. with out a planned progresson.. i did every thing the way u said or did 😊 What's next with me now.. is, I always wanted to paint people better (am more into landscapes) And so i got hooked to drawing. Diggin deep into proportions, figure drawing, construction, anatomy, perspective, fighting hard to find balance between keeping it simple yet effective. And yes am enjoying it so so much..😍 they started reflecting obviously in my watercolor figures. I started painting hands, legs better, able to shade face white well.. The last Nirvana for me is to be able to paint from imagination, even if it includes people in it 😊

Hi Pavan. Thanks so much for sharing your journey. I too am very interested in adding figures to my landscapes. Thank you. Hopefully I have found you at just the right time. I’ve always drawn and the only tradin was in high school (1964-67). Five years ago, I took a watercolor class at my local senior center. And did well enough that I was asked to teach the class when the current teacher retired. However, recently, I’ve hit a creative wall, felt burned out, and wonder if I have anything yet to offer my students. I watch videos but have less desired to actually paint. I think taking in-person lessons might help me get un-stuck but I’m going to try some of your tips, too. Thanks again.

It is very inspiring and refreshing to know that you are so young in the watercolor game. Most of the other content creators that I'm drawn to have had long careers or proper schooling in watercolor, which is great, but it can also be disheartening to feel like you have to jump those hurdles to be able to feel competent. I dived deep in the you tube watercolor world and was amazed with every artist I found and there are thousands of them. there is such a variety of style, colorchoice, paletts, amount of experiance- ther will never be an end to find something new. I confess watching way more than trying myself- but you encouraged me right now to limit my watchtime and then start my own right away where I watched the video. I will find a desk where I set all up to practice and watch a little. at the moment I watch downstairs and don t go upstairs to my paints. I agree to each and every thing you named and will to my best to improve with a new plan !have a great summer and best wishes from Germany.

I only just started painting about a month ago after doing much research & watching many videos. In the process of gathering supplies, I had the opportunity to get a FREE block of Arches cold press paper from Joann’s with a 60% off coupon & a $25 gift card! 🎉 But knowing the value of it I hesitated even opening it up, thinking I would save it until I got ‘good enough’. But yesterday I decided to at least open it up & try it to see if it really was worth all the fuss & money. I compared it to a few other papers at the same time. Well, that did it-I’m now spoiled to use anything else 😂! And all I did was a simple color wash, not even a picture, but the fact it hardly buckled & the colors flowed so well was amazing. I’ll still use my other papers for practice & experimenting (I love mixed media art too) but will definitely plan on using Arches in the future. I also loved the 300-lbs handmade card stock I got for painting Christmas cards! Wow, is THAT ever great! I just found your channel today & am enjoying your content-thanks!

I too have watched lots of videos on KZbin and I follow lots of artists on Instagram. I finally dipped my toe into taking an online class from someone I enjoyed on YT and IG and I've had so much fun as I explore, experiment and learn different techniques. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

I just found your channel....our stories are so similar! I started watercolor 8 months ago and I went through the same learning lessons you express in this video. I'll be going back to watch your other videos. Do you do any critiquing? I'm at the point where I need to know from someone who does this if I'm on track. I'm also from the PNW, and a person of faith. : ) Thanks for posting.

Thanks for sharing your creative journey in watercolours. I'm also a beginner, not as disciplined as you but certainly very inspired by the creative process. There are some good points mentioned here, most of which I've also discovered in the last 2 years. My consistency is in need of improvement, although I feel I'm still in the experimental phase. The only sharing I've done is with friends and family and a local art supplier here in Madrid, but I've been thinking of joining a blog or something. The Rabbit Hole is very real, so great advice about that. Guilty here! Subscribed! I'll check out some of your videos and see if I can kick-start another spurt of painting after hitting the wall recently myself.

I had noted as a beginner ( like me ..though 5 years yo yo with watercolour)...we like tight realistic art..then as you see and observe more we tend start to understand more impressionistic style. Why is it so?😊
@KrisDeBruineStudio Жыл бұрын
Great question. I'm not sure everyone grows to prefer an impressionist style. Some people prefer a highly realistic style...and always will. Other artists do change their preferences over time, as you suggest. My own thoughts as to the growth towards impressionism, is because it looks more "painterly." While highly realistic paintings resemble photographs in their details, impressionist paintings LOOK like paintings. :-) Which I guess, is the point of painting. Those are just my thoughts. I hope it helps. Thanks for asking such great questions.

Hi. I guess it depends on what kind of art style you like. However, this page on my KZbin channel lists many of the KZbin artists that I have watched and appreciate. Check it out at: kzbin.infochannels?view=49&shelf_id=11

Thank you for the inspiration. Were you already an artist when you picked up watercolor?

Hi Barbara. When I was a teen, I painted in oil and acrylic. I also did a lot of drawing. I was pretty good at it. But I took a 40 year break and didn't start back at my art practice until about 4 years ago. I had never painted in watercolor until then. Now I love it.

If you get the porcelain When you put your paint in it do you have to keep it covered up
@KrisDeBruineStudio2 жыл бұрын
Great question. The Stephen Quiller porcelain palette that I use comes with a plastic cover. When I'm done painting, I mist the wells lightly with water then I cover the whole palette. It stays slightly damp until I come back to paint - usually within a day or two. However, if it does dry completely, it's no big deal. Good quality watercolor paints re-active very quickly when misted with water. This is the palette I use - kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4CxhpyPpd6eerc

Thanks Rayanne and welcome to the channel. I have a degree in Graphic Design and did oils and acrylics back in high school, but watercolor is new to me. I have fallen in love with it. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Thank you for this Kris....I must admit that I started late last year but have little work so far. I must admit that I have “fallen down that KZbin rabbit hole” and can overthink everything. When you started watercolor were you already sketching or creating art by other means?
@KrisDeBruineStudio4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dawn. I used to draw and paint in oils and acrylics when I was in high school. So, I like to tell people I took a "40 year break" from my art. Ha! When I started with watercolor it was completely new to me as a medium. However, I did have that latent artistic drive, and some drawing experience to build on.

I noticed from this video that you were out in nature when you had somewhat of an epiphany regarding watercolor. Once you realize that watercolor is Mother Nature's medium you must realize that She makes the rules. Only the very best supplies are allowed as you well know. She also demands a certain degree of humility, patience, love of nature, and respect for other watercolorists. We are all different. Soon I found myself on the wildest ride of my life! The only ruts are the ones that I create for myself. All of Creation is there for your enjoyment. Mother Nature can be a terrible mistress but She is the best teacher of watercolor in all of Creation! I am very fortunate to be allowed to be one of Her students!

@@KrisDeBruineStudio well worth the membership. $40 per year. I've only been a member since a few months before the lockdown so a lot is not happening now. They are doing some online demonstrations, there is currently a juried show online... deadline soon, I believe mid August? I disagree with your statement about paper. I have seen many excellent paintings on beginner watercolor paper. I painted good paintings on wood pulp paper and on cotton paper. It's all about knowing how use your paper.
