This some weird Diva complex from the artists tbh. When they are small, they would literally beg for free advertising and exposure. Countless artists are a thing now because of some internet random getting them viral for free. And as soon as bands reach a certain threshold of fame and cult following, their ego takes the steering wheel and they pretend their experience is some once in a lifetime 'lightning in a bottle' magic trick, which is too sacred to be recorded. Half the concerts I have attended, I made the decision to buy the ticket after watching some random nobody's clips off youtube. Dude, if bands started sharing full high quality professional grade concert recordings, most people will not bother with taking photos on videos for memories during the performance. Or if the performances were consistently cheap and accessible to us, we wouldn't care enough to. Even the tickets are digital now, there is nothing to look back on for nostalgia, considering bands keep disintegrating left and right. The sheer audacity from some of the artists that tour once every 4 years, don't even visit your corner of the world, enable the outrageous scalping cartel that leads to 1000$ tickets prices, and when you save for months to make that trip happen, tell you: 'please no phones guys, it hurts our feelings' is funny. And I cant emphasize it enough, I only record my 2-3 favourite songs and the band's opening gimmick, just like most of the people. This gets brought up every other week on reddit and people bend over backwards to villainize people who like to take some photos and clips of a show they are attending. They bend over backwards trying to conjure the stupidest reasons to portray people quietly vibing and taking a 30 second recording of their favourite song: 'Oh the phone lights are hurting my corneas' - And the 1000 floodlights and lasers on stage are not? 'Oh its distracting me' - Look at the fucking stage, there are always going to be thousands of people around you doing their own thing, regardless of phones. 'Oh but the phone is blocking my view' - As opposed to people with hige signboards, tall vikings and morrons who lift up their partners on their shoulders? I have never had my 'view blocked' by someone's phone. Its always some drunk shirtless morons who cut line and invade your personal space. People cannot lift phones above their heads for 3 hours, go try it. 'View' is hardly guaranteed. I have stood right next to a railing have had the security or venue photographers ruining my view. 'Oh but they are not enjoying the experience the right way' - How does that concern you? Its up to them to decide what counts as a good experience, its their money. 'Oh but the people on the phones are ruining the vibe by not dancing and singing' - Mfker, did you pay money to see a random teenager's musical rendition and dance sequence? Did they spend their hard earned cash to entertain you? Focus on the artist and ask your friends to dance, sing, or mosh. 'Oh they are doing it for their scoail media points'. They will never watch it again - Again, doesn't concern you. I record for my personal memories. I have opened and rewatched clips from the 2022 Rammstein show hundreds of time. They wont be back again at least till 2027 based on the recent rumours. I have shit memory, and rewatching these short clips gives me immense joy. Judge all you want, there isn't anything good going on in my life. And trust me, most people who pretend to have an issue with it, absolutely binge watch the recordings other people put out online for free. Cuz apparently they were busy living in the moment and have three blurrly selfies to look back on they took in the parking lot. At the end of the day, the performance is a product, and we are the consumers who are literally making it possible for these artists to live their hedonistic lifestyles without having to worry about 'rent money'. I cant believe it has to be said but people must be allowed to enjoy shows however they want to as long as it doesn't harm or ruin someone else's experience. Ironically no one talks about the drunks, addicts and morons physically or sexually harassing other people in concerts. The guy with his phone out is always the boogeyman.

Concert goers taking video and photos with their phones at shows believe it or not are actually doing the performing artists a service for it gives them exposure and can be intriguing to others at times. This is essential when it comes to newer bands that are starting out as well. We record our shows because we enjoy reliving the experience. Personally, I rewatch the shows we record,and look back and think “that part was awesome” or “that was the best part.” Mental memories only last so long. We understand that there are some folks out there that prefer to be in the moment. We like to document the shows we attend. Venues don’t have a problem with it either (it’s actually within their own policies that cell phones can be used to take photo and video, and not to use professional photography or video equipment). Modern day technology has come a long way, and we embrace it. Having said that, we also try to make sure we’re not in the way of others while recording our shows. We wouldn’t want any obstructions in our way, and we wouldn’t want any obstructions in other people’s way.

I agree with the fact that phones are usually ubiquitous and seen as essential by some, but I know the artists should definitely be able to ban their use as video cameras if they wish. If someone is holding his arm way up in the air with his screen on full brightness for 10 or 15 minutes at a time, capturing the magic at a quiet folk music concert, he should definitely be slapped on the head, as that is very disturbing to the people around him who want to enjoy the show. You can certainly ban that sort of behavior without banning phones.

I grew up going to shows long before cell phones. Cameras were prohibited and if you got caught taping or filming you got kicked out and had the possibility of your film being taken. I can’t stand seeing people mess with their phone the whole show instead of being engaged with the live concert in front of you. And I’m sure bands get annoyed seeing phones in the air instead of faces paying attention. Not to mention it’s not fair for the bands. People post awful sounding videos of shows and spoil the setlist. I don’t support banning phones but I do support them not being in use during performances.

"I paid for this show so I should enjoy it however I want" Fucking THANK YOU. People bitch so much about someone, recording a song or two or even the whole show that it really becomes their mission to get rid of that. ASSUMING that they will enjoy the show MORE without it. Let people enjoy the show how THEY want to enjoy it. I'm grateful for those people whom record. My wife being one of them. I'm more of the guy who headbangs, dance to, mosh, etc whatever while my wife is usually the one recording a decent amount of the show. That's HER way of enjoying it and I LOVE it because then, we talk about that night and she has a video of it, which I LOVE. This goes for people that couldn't make it to the show too. Okay not a music or concert related comment but I have a perspective that relates to the cell phone in modern entertainment. I work for DragonCon in a area where it's called the Walk of Fame. This is a ballroom that hosts a variety of celebrity guests that are in the entertainment industry specifically TV and film. The ballroom holds about 100 booths of these current and aging stars who are mostly out of the industry or their star power is waning. Anyway the convention forbids ANY type of unauthorized filming or photography in this area. This is mostly to prevent "stealing" and boy is it a pain in the ass to police con'goers stopping them from sneaking a pic or vid. When X is charging $100+ for a autograph it's kinda hard to justify stopping people BUT it is how most of these people make a living especially stars whose star doesn't shine very bright anymore. 🌟

I remember going to see Prince in 88 and one of his security guards took my camera took the film gave it back to me he was very nice about it. But in today's world we live in people have their phones with them at all times. I have been to see Foo Fighters Journey and Def Leppard and recently I saw Static-X and Sevendust had no problem filming at those shows cause I don't wanna film the whole show I just wanna have a little memory. And most of those men seem completely OK with it. At the Foo Fighters concert Dave Grove told us to hold up our cell phones and turn on our Flashlights so it lit up the entire arena it was actually quite beautiful. But I can also see if some artist don't like it but I think you're really going out of your way to make things more difficult than they need to be by not letting people just use their phone. No I will say if it says when you were buying the ticket no phones are allowed and you agree to that then it really is an asshole move to try to film when you already agreed that you wouldn't.
@CodyGraves222325 күн бұрын
I agree with a lot of what you said. It's like when Kiss made that interviewer take off his Iron Maiden shirt for one of theirs. The point of paying to go out is to have a night of freedom. Bands wonder why the world is giving up on them. I think the people need to bail on the bigger bands and invest in smaller establishments where the artist are thrilled to see them. Take pictures, love the fact that they are being recorded. Instead of spending 70 to 200 dollars on people who treat you like cattle, go to a bar for free and tip the band 50 dollars and help someone build their dream. Throw a house party and hire that band, make some friends for life.

I believe that was the same night hetfield got burned by pyro and they had to cut their set short and asked GNR to play longer so James could go to the hospital. Zach, let me be frank, your argument is selfish. I used to go to the movies a lot, but recently I have stopped going because people refuse to stop hopping on IG with their phone on full brightness, or snapchatting movie scenes, or just plain recording the movie. I 100% believe that there should be a no cell phone policy in movie theaters. Now, cell phone use is nowhere near as disruptive at a rock concert, but it is still disruptive. Your argument of "I paid for my ticket, I should be able to do whatever I want" is wrong. Does it stop at using your phone? What about pissing on the ground? What about yelling in someone's ear? What about holding a sign up to block everyone's view? What about kicking people in the face when they aren't even in the pit? Where is the line drawn? There absolutely needs to be a crack down on cell phone use in public areas like movie theaters and concerts. It ruins the experience. If people don't have the self control to stay off their phone and actually enjoy the show, they can stay home and look at their phone in their living room, or just anywhere else but at an event where it's a communal experience. I see cell phone use like a drug, and there is plenty of research and anecdotal evidence to back that up. People lack the facilities to tear themselves away from their phone and actually enjoy what they paid for, so the venues should help them do that.
@ZachAdkinsGuitar26 күн бұрын
Pissing on the ground is illegal. Yelling in someone's ear can be considered assault. Kicking people in the face is assault. These are illegal activities. Those are not the same as using your cell phone at an event. I agree people should be more mindful with their cell phones in public places, but we have free will and we don't live in a dictatorship, if we do these things it would be out of kindness for others. Which is fine. But to mandate it and tell others what they can or can't do? That is what I'm against.

This is a serious topic for me. As a single woman/single mama, I won't go to ANY show where I am not going to have immediate access to my phone. It's a principle of SAFETY, not me trying to take away someone's enjoyment of performing. The REAL problem at concerts are (as mentioned elsewhere) *drunks, addicts, morons, and sexual harassment* , often leading to altercations, assault, theft, or worse. CELL PHONES are a first line of defense for that sort of thing. They are also a great way to collect evidence. "I don't like cameras; I feel much better when I don't have to look at them while performing; insert lame excuse here" vs "I would like my fans to have unlimited access to their own phones as a safety measure" = the difference between a diva and a Rockstar.

Turned out later it was an emergency message to her son as there was a problem at home with the babysitter.......... The band later released an apology. If a band is that precious about it they could always have no phones in standing sections and phones allowed in the seated. If phones recording and other "gizmos" stop you 'dancing' in the futurenow days (old Brundog's reasoning) then so does sitting down. Now I double check. I also don't stand there and record every second of every song. Just be respectable & I'm sure most of the artists should be cool with it.

CONS: You won't be able to take a couple of pictures and video/ You won't see footage from other shows. PROS: You will no see that f-ing sea of phone screens in front of you during the concerts.

I hate being distracted by ppl in front of me who have to video entire show! Far less applause for performers due to that also. At least in NYC playhouses we have ushers on the lookout for those who don’t care about their phones distracting / iobstructing your view of stage! Keep Live Alive! ,

I understand the performers side of the argument but agree with you, that it's not really their place to say you can't have your cell phone out. People sometimes need to communicate or be available to the outside world, you should be able to check your text messages or check your security cameras if an alert goes off. As for people recording and taking photos, again... I see both sides. I love recording entire shows and uploading them to KZbin, both for my own enjoyment (Yes, I do go back and watch or listen) and also because dozens, hundreds, even thousands of other people all around the world get to share the experience as well. I make my best effort to get quality footage (Constantly trying to improve) and I'm as respectful to others around me as possible, careful not to obstruct anyone's view or distract from the performance. The people who I personally see as the problem are the people who are waving their phone around making zero effort to capture any footage that would be enjoyable to watch or listen to. You don't need to hold your phone THAT high to get a clear shot of the stage, you're holding your phone vertically so the bottom 1/3 of the screen is the backs and heads of the people in front of you, the top 1/3 is the ceiling or the sky behind the stage, and you've got the singer and the drummer in frame but that's it. And you recorded 2.5 minutes of a 4 minute song. I'm not saying some people should be allowed to record or take photos and others shouldn't, but courtesy and a little bit of effort might be a minimum expectation I'd be in support of. It's not going to eat into ticket sales, watching a show on KZbin is hardly a substitute for a live concert, but as mentioned earlier, videos on the internet (or even just the audio) give people all over the world in who knows what situation (unable to go to a show in person for example) AND across time, a chance to share that experience. As far as the time element of it goes... You never know what's going to happen with a live performance, good or bad. What was going to be just another show might be that bands final performance, there could be an accident (Dave Grohl falling off the stage), or even just a unique set of circumstances that cause something interesting to happen... Saw Creed and 3 Doors Down over the summer in Charlotte and because of weather, the schedule was being compressed a bit and Finger Eleven played one song in the middle of 3 Doors Down's set on their gear. Not rock history, but a unique performance and of course, and of course I wasn't recording 3 Doors Down's set and I missed it. But that's the kind of thing that compels me to film. Tool is strict on the no-phones but doesn't lock them up, they just kick you out. It was annoying, it was kinda nice not seeing any screens in the crowd, but having them there doesn't bother me as long as it's not pointlessly just blocking my view.

It’s interesting in reflecting back to the eras with the best bands at their peak (before 2000) no cameras were allowed at shows and people had to watch the show and wanted to get solely into the music. No multitasking and sinking around with a silly app. Digital leash addicts holding their annoying phones in peoples eye line the whole show really ruin it for everyone. And then they delete most or all of their footage the next day and rarely look back at the photos after they upload it to show people they were at a show and their friends weren’t. I think most people now are noticeably less happy, wrote noticeably less good and less creative music, and clearly do not have the same excitement for shows, songs, or anything in life because they cannot put their addictions down. Annoying people at restaurants. Even while they’re driving. It’s sad and just insane to see so much of it.

Some of these "musicians" don't want visual proof that they are lip-syncing and or that they suck, live. That removes the illusion that they are some type of "gods" to be worshiped. I, for one, don't watch any cellphone videos taken at shows (because I don't want to hear Johnny or Suzy, singing the wrong lyrics, out of key) nor do I care, about them being used at the show. Take your video memories, etc. If I'm not close to the stage or on stage standing stage-left, I can't see anything, anyway, so Idc if there's a bunch of phones being held in the air. People might even be using their camera, zoomed in, to actually see the band on stage from 30+ yards away. Good for them for wanting to see, what they paid for. Any band that has an issue with cameras/cell phones should take note from the Black Dahlia Murder and livestream all of their shows directly to KZbin. I can't go to all their shows but seeing a fairly professional livestream with good sound, will certainly make me more interested in supporting them via merch and album purchases.

I guess if i wanted to see them ,and this was the only option i would think about going,but i really don't see the point to be honest. Ticket prices and meet abd greets are so expensive now,they should at least let the fans have fun at the show.

I've been going to shows since '88. Not once in the last 15 or so years have I been distracted by someone holding up a cell phone. People constantly put their arms up to cheer and/or throw the horns, how is that any different or less distracting? As someone who likes the option of doing a bit of filming myself, if you're actually invested in what's happening on stage instead of what's going on around you, you wont notice it, and I say that goes for the artists as well. Concentrate on your performance; how good a show are you giving if you're paying more attention to the crowd, looking for people breaking your precious cell phone rule, rather than what you're doing on stage? It's the height of narcissism to accuse people of not paying attention to you, exclusively, for the entirety of 2 hours, give or take, just because they're not doing it the way you want them to. These artists can get bent, especially considering more and more of them aren't even singing or playing live anymore, to varying degrees.

I put this as a reply, but I'll leave it as a comment. I got no problem with people having their phones. If you're in a concert where everybody's waving his phone in the air, wave your phone in the air. But if you're at a nice quiet folk concert And you stick your arm in the air with your screen on full blast, recording video for 15 minutes, pissing everybody else off around you, then you're in the wrong room. I think rude behaviors should be banned, rather than devices. Take a few pictures, or a minute of video, and put your phone away. Don't leave your arm up all night. Everyone hates that.

So, on the last couple of Ghost and Kiss tours, I took a bunch of pics, as I like to do, to remember the show by. But also, I've picked out the best ones, and had them printed as photo books or calendars for other friends/fans as Christmas presents. Very individual and personal. Looks like I won't be doing that next year. I'll still be going to see Ghost, coz I'm a big fan, but I'm a little pissed off about this. Like others have said, posting stuff has been free advertising for some of these bands. I'm not one for filming the whole show or anything, but a few pics and short vids, yeah.

There's always been restrictions on camera possession / use at gigs. Back in the day, I remember stuffing my camera down my ballsack to smuggle it into the venue. I do enjoy taking a few snaps of the bands when they're on stage laying down the law. The problem these days is that now everyone has a camera on their phone, they all think they're fucking Steven Spielberg! I've never really cared what the bands' opinions are on personal camera / mobile camera use is, but I DO care about paying a fuckload of money for a gig ticket, only for my view of the bands to be completely obstructed by a sea of LCD screens. I pay to see the band... not hundreds of camera phones up in the air for the entire show. There's an etiquette & middle-ground compromise whereby fans can easily shove their arms in the air for a few seconds at a time and grab the occasional picture, but fans these days just take the ever loving piss and want to film the entire show. I'm sorry, but it's annoying as fuck. What's the point in filming it anyway? So you can shove a muffled video on KZbin that looks like it's been drunkenly filmed through mashed potato by someone with Parkinson's Disease?!?! I'm all for the banning of cellphone cameras now... I never in my life thought I would be, but like I mentioned... some fans just have no fucking respect for the other people who bought tickets for their favorite artists they've possibly waited their whole life to see.

Probably you do not understand. Tobias Forge really wants the Ghost shows to be like the concerts from the 70s and 80s which was you know eye contact and face-to-face with the artist to the fans and leaving the moment and meeting new people and making you friends just like back in the days of the 70s and 80s. The whole cell phone concert debate thing is just very ridiculous and the people who are pro cell phones are basically running out of excuses. My take on the whole concert cell phone topic is basically this. If the band or artist is doing a device free show that you had to put your phone in the pouch if you're against it don't go that's all case closed.

I cannot say your age here. Between 30-45. But remember or youtube a concert from the 80s. All these musicians here were fans in the 80s and or fans and playing in bands. Theres more noises and crazy crowds at Gospel Sunday f....g church service than any concert nowadays except for Death Metal concert goers these guys live in right now not for tomorrow memories. Concerts suck because of cell phone. Even having access to youtube music contents we are able to kill the magic and mystery of seeing a band live. In the 80s youd get an album,a concert and few posters from mags and maybe a vhs tape time to time from a band we like. Now with youtube you can see their f kids,houses,their diets,,yikes. Depends on the reason or intention behind it. Is the band avoiding video and cell phones because they are trying to hide the fact they are lip syncing? Or are they just wanting to genuinely make the performance more enjoyable? Even some intimate crowd gigs that televised they may ask someone to put their phones away so it looks better on TV. That’s for about 1 to 5 songs usually. Or you have bands like tool where they want you to go pay for tickets to see the band. Not watch it from some guys phone who was in the crowd.

Ok, let's look at it from the artists perspective. It used to be that the artist made money from record sales, and touring/merchandise, etc. Since the spread of music sharing and streaming, nobody buys music anymore... it's free for the taking, and the only way artists can make a living is in merchandise sales anymore. So, if everyone has videos of their shows, pictures of the artists, and sharing the cell phone video of the concert, why would anyone want to spend money to go to a show? Basically people are expecting the artists to toil away creating music for them, yet not allowing them to protect the last thing they have left to earn money from. If you are childishly upset about that, DONT GO TO THE SHOW! I totally disagree with this guy. Artists doubt make money from the record companies these days!!!! Get over it! Eventually this thinking is going to eliminate artists all together, and you'll be listening to AI generated music and nothing more...
