This is the best video on the 5’s pure use case. After watching all the others this has been the one that’s really clarified a purchasing decision. I have canceled my order and can’t justify that flat image. You can really see the lack of detail once you’re inside with the texture on the ceiling. + The colors are way off. Dynamic range is better but the flatness kills it. I think this is just something that happens with sensors capable of HLG. They only look good in HLG but I haven’t seen any proper examples of that yet. This looks like the iPhones yet even flatter. D-log M can bring a lot back but i feel you still need particular scenarios. From what I’ve seen darker scenes will look good, daylight is just washed out and any natural contrast/pop is compensated with vibrancy.

Perhaps things will change with a firmware update. Dji has listened in the past and is capable. Everything else the camera has to offer is grand. Temperature range, features and usability, mic setup, shooting quickness, form factor. But I feel battery life will suffer to fix, so shouldn’t get too caught up on that.

Also the situations where you do see more clarity from the action 5 pro looks to be more because of it’s improved focusing distance. The 4 seems to have most detail throughout the image but you will see more detail in only his face on the 5, that and most noticeably when he gets close to the cat because it focuses at a closer distance. So there we see more texture in the couch and more clarity in the cat. Upping the bitrate should make the detail come through all around.

And if I put the DJI 5 battery in the DJI 4, will the battery life of the DJI 4 be similar to that of the DJI 5? I know they are compatible and no one on KZbin has yet done this test. Since the differences are very subtle for many people, it may be more worthwhile to get the DJI 4 and put the DJI 5 battery in separately.

Dude….average Joe videos is what built KZbin. It’s a whole different animal now, but I believe these are the type of videos that still make KZbin what it is. This was the BEST video I’ve seen on the OA5. Helped me decide on the OA4 instead. There’s no guarantee DJI will be able to tweak everything that’s wrong and the 4 just looks better. Not even close. Plus, you can get the OA4 adventure bundle for $349 rn.

I am a camera reviewer and you speak truths. Well done man. Its way way to soft and warm. I think they will get it dialed in firmware as you state but no doubt its like "misty" lacking that detail for sure. It almost to me looks like a filter is on it, like a mist filter. I think adding on ND filters will help but right now it looks......not that good in most situations. IMO of course.

Nice vid. I'm looking to get this camera for mainly 1 use case: for traveling, shooting evening nightclub and bar scenes in D Log. Any thoughts, upcoming reviews on how this compares to an iphone shooting at night? Not so concerned about audio, but do like how this would connect to DJI mic 2.

@@seajlim what’s up, bro? I can definitely share a video about that because that’s exactly what I use this for. Traveling, Dlog, x2 Mic 2 connection. I can definitely recommend it for night scenes or lowlight scenes, but you have to get the GoPro light mod to go with it. You can pair this up together with a nice cage or buy one of Dji new hot shoe battery door replacements. Is the perfect amount of light for any night scenario. In response to iPhone… yeah the phone is still better. But I don’t like using my phone as a video recording device. I prefer to keep those tools separate. Oh, and audio is fantastic from my testing internally and externally with the DJI mics

Returned the Action 5 and got the Action 4 for $209 on Black Friday sale. It’s the better camera. DJI tried to cram a bunch of features in the 5 and in order to manage over heating they gave it a lower bitrate so the image looks worse. I shoot in flat D-Log so I can make the footage from either camera look good. The 4 has a higher bitrate and non of the fluff.

When the clouds rolled in, it looked cooler, but in direct sunlight, it lacks clear color balance, unlike the 4, and feels “washed out” to me. 4:37 i agree about the shirt. Hence the reason DJI needs to fix the auto white balance issue

For most “action” scenes this camera would underperform with bitrate that low when doing fast-paced scenes. Basically everything will look blotchy.. on top of the already pastelish color.

The Normal Mode in Action 5 seems to seek a "HDR Look", for me it looks artificial, and can be done in Davinci Resolve on Action 4 footage if I want. I like the natural look from Normal Mode on Action 4, and if I shoot in D-LOG M I can get a better image with more dynamic range too. If DJI doesn't fix that Action 5, shoot in D-LOG M and do your own color grading on it to fix what they did.

Im sorry but I cant get on board with the flat look of the 5. In my opinion the picture on the GP12 crushes this (in bright light). I mean you say they can fix this with an update, however, I have yet to see a company change their overall color science on an update.

I think, AO5 has low contrast, low highlight, higher shadow setting compare to AO4 so that make it become brighter. Seems like there is another layer like a very shallow fog (something like that) on the screen for Ao5….

interesting comparison, the action 4 colors definitely looks more true to life, OA5 colors looks way too HDR like an iphone style video and looks really washed out when you panned to the side with the sun, its really trying to optimize for dynamic range at the expense of the colors and contrast. the AO5 does seem to have more details but the details seems to be lost to video compression probably due to the lower bitrates. Maybe the dlog profile will give users better control perhaps.

A DJI rep confirmed the next firmware update will add a higher bitrate option. It was not an official statement, but it was by a rep from DJI. I still wonder if it will beat the Ace Pro 2 when it is released next month. I wonder if it even beats the original Ace Pro released last year. Perhaps in dynamic range.

@@TimBrownTown recently heard about this as well. Very much hope that is not the only thing they’re going to resolve. There is still an issue with the color balance ( and the white balance in my opinion ). Other than that, it’s a great camera! However, the chip inside is being purposely handicapped. I read some research it’s capable of doing 4K 240 frames per second as well as 8k 30. All of which I’m guessing is coming to the action 6 with hopefully a bigger body for better heat management and a 1” sensor

What the hell did they do with HDR in OA 5? It looks so damn bad and cheap.... Look for example at 2:52, so unnatural, light pillar has some kind of a halo, building looks like it's a cardboard. Image is flat. Hope they'll fix all this. The only thing is better is that OA 5 is sharper and has less noise in low light And yeah when in log all these problems looks like do not exist. They just ruined normal mode.

For my taste the right camera footage also looks much better. This is what I really hate on my OA4: The videos just don't look clear. Furthermore it's really hard to capture my phone screen (that's important for me as a vlogger). And also other important objects that are closer to the camera (my face for example) look mushy and with less details.

But I will add I wish just got the Osmo pocket three and I highly recommend it! It’s much better to have both; that’s when I started to realize this is simply just an action camera that has the ability to Vlog near water

@@urbanfireblade no noticeable difference tbh. What difference you may see after peeping is unnecessary for a video unlike most of these camera KZbinrs. It is best to combo the action with the pocket 3 for well-rounded image quality and reliability
