I had the GoPro 9 and 11 and both had issues. Moved to DJI Action 4 and no problems so far. It is just so straightforward in usage, and the mic setup is a bonus. The low light is ability is pretty good in comparison to gopro, and the Action 4 doesn't blur as badly as the gopro when panning around or moving at speed. Pretty happy with it all round. Not sure how they can upgrade the next version of the camera but DJI upgrades are usually major unlike gopro who tweak their stuff then push it out with bugs intact. What we have with DJI is a collective of cameras, drones, mics, and accessories that just work together which is what we as vloggers or creators want.

Ive had the action 3 since march 2023 and have not had any freezing or lost footage. It does overheat but by that time I am done recording anyway. Great camera. I might get the 5.

This is excellent - as are all of your videos! I'm done with GoPro and am upgrading from the 10 to something else. I first got excited about seeing the Osmo Action 5 Pro, but after watching videos on the 4 saying how good it is and seeing it's now $309 vs $449 for the 5 for the Adventure Combos, I think I'll go with the 4 and pick up a polarizer and ND filters set and other accessories.

Exactly the same reason I left GoPro; GoPro was just too unreliable and I didn’t have the ability to re-shoot my tour rides. So now I have a DJI Osmo Action in my chin mount and use the unreliable GoPro as a secondary camera on the handlebar. Needless to say filming my most recent motorbike tour to Switzerland and Italy was a success, well done DJI!

GoPro need to comes up with the new larger CMOS sensor and solve heating issues instead of increasing resolution to 5.3k and further(in future), if GoPro really want to enter into the race again.

Another excellent video. DJI have done a very good job integrating their wireless mic into both this and the Pocket 3. Makes great marketing sense. Remember when the Røde wireless setup was the go-to mic? Most people have forgotten. Almost every single creator worth anything has switched to either this or the Pocket 3 or both.

I had the action 3 but after 4 cameras I sold it for the hero 11, but looking at the action 4 I do like the way you can Bluetooth connect to the mic 2 . My GoPro setup to a mic is a right faff as you well know. I might purchase one when they drop the action 5 , hopefully they do some deals on them. Great detailed follow up vid 👍

Thanks for this review and all your clips. I am looking for a good action camera to get out on rivers for tubing or kayaking. This helped me make the decision. I agree with a lot of what you said in your review. I bought a DJI Osmo Action 4 last winter to use in place of my 2 GoPro Hero 9's. Over time I missed my GoPro's ability to maintain horizontal leveling with the Max Lens....so I bought a Hero 12 which is fabulous. The Max Lens 2.0 for this GoPro is smaller which is nice...and shoots 4K...unlike the previous Max Lens version which shot 2.7K. That was always a letdown when using the old GoPro footage with crisp beautiful 4K Canon footage for wildlife and landscape shots. I also just use a DJI wireless mic and sync it later, so that works too with no wires or transmitter to bulk it up. Thanks for your review. Very informative video, as usual Shawn.

I also added an action 4 to my set up just for the wireless mic. It's really a shame that the mic 2 doesn't work with the Hero 12. Which memory card do you use? I have had heat issues with the Action 4. When I'm outside in the sun (mid 80's temps here in Central Maine) recording in 4k / 60 fps / Rock Steady on / 10 Bit. After a few minutes, the Osmo Action freezes. Only happens on sunlit days. The only thing I can think is maybe it's the SD card? Using a Sandisk Extreme 256 (same cards I use in my Hero 12). Towards the end you mount the Osmo to an RC Car and, interestingly, I just bought the Osmo and an RC Car with the intent to mount the Osmo to the car and the drive the RC Car with the Osmo mounted to the top. That's in addition to mounting to a full sized car for recording offroad adventures. I was tempted to go with the newer Osmo 5, but the cost stopped me. I don't yet have the DJI Mic 2, but that's probably next on my list...

As a moto vlogger I need reliability and adaptability, the Action 4 with the Mic 2 was a game changer, still using the 3 with the transmitter too, direct audio to both cameras, dropped GoPro and long time ago.

Where do you mount the mic in the helmet? I have the Action 3 and use it with the adapter for a 3.5 mm, which is still a fairly simple setup, but the less bulk on the helmet, the better...

Hey Shawn, is there much of a delay from when pressing record on the camera to the audio recording from the DJI mic 2? I’m using the Rode Wireless Me with the Action 4 & have about a 3 second delay with the audio. I’m thinking about buying the DJI Mic 2 & doing away with the receiver plugged into the camera. My setup is for Motovlogging so I don’t have the camera turned on all the time, I just press record to turn the camera on. Cheers Deano.

I admit that there is a delay with Mic2, I think it's usually about 1-2 seconds. But that's not so important to me. You can synchronize or adjust easily with Davinci.

Definitely if you can get a good deal on the 4 it’s an excellent camera. I prefer blogging with an action camera over the pocket 3. But the park three does have some nice features as well. Tough decision.

For the Action 4 you also need to use the Mic 2 receiver on the camera. I guess the Action 5 Pro will connect directly to two mics like the Pocket 3.

Well, it depends on the length you need the DJI one is actually very small lightweight and minimal but they have an even smaller one, but it is fairly short, but it does feature a foldout tripod. Both are extremely minimal. I use them quite a bit.

The intense Philippine sun during the dry season in April overheats my GPH11 even though I'm driving with no battery, door removed and USB C cable powered with external battery pack. Other months I have no issues. Need the GPS for tracing my routes, so the GPH12 and OA4 are out of the question. Have you taken your OA4 out in Nevada or Death Valley during the summer? Does it overheat in those conditions?

A low light mode for DJI Osmo Action 4 would be welcome, as it is with DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Action 4 does quite poorly in low light, at night with street lights. Pocket 3 films unexpectedly well in low light, but it has the disadvantage of being very fragile.

My only real complaint about the Action4 is the accessory thumb screw being a bit thick. It doesn't allow my large sausage fingers to unmount the camera from the magnetic lock on the screw side.

I can’t trust my GP 11 to not overheat using it as an action camera. My other big issue is bright light and white balance when other action cameras don’t have a yellow sky issue. The color sensor lacks. I need the simplicity and don’t want to act like it’s a full frame camera constantly making adjustments in a dynamic environment. I should have bought the Action 3 at the time but there was the focus issue going around and the 5.3k was appealing.
