SAME HERE... TRYING TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT TRAILER... BUT MY BUSINESS MIND IS TELLING ME TO JUST GET A REGULAR 10K CAR TRAILER, TO START MAKING MONEY... AND PICK THE TRAILER I WANT, LATER ON DOWN THE ROAD...

One of the reasons I've never started my own business is because the people who stay in business long term and are actually successfully will tell you that it generally takes years to realize an actual profit from the amount of expenses it takes to get started and become sustainable. There are many more reasons but it's amazing how people think it's so easy to have a successful business and not go broke or be married to it. Wonderful video that can really help a lot of people to go into business with real expectations.

With the new CDL laws in place, I envision future changes that may make non-CDL hotshot go away. My opinion, nothing more. So I got my CDL and started looking for a bigger truck and trailer. Here's some numbers to chew on. I currently run flatbed freight in the southeast region and am home every night. I look for loads that pick up and deliver within 300 miles of Macon Georgia. The other day, there were 17 possible loads for my non-CDL setup, and none of them were profitable loads for me to run. Changing my search parameters to a CDL setup (40 foot @ 20K) and there were 83 possible loads. Changing to a flatbed semi, and the loads jumped to 8057! So I have no interest in looking for a CDL setup, especially how hard it is to find trailers. The CDL setup would cost about as much as a flatbed semi. My current 2020 30' GN trailer with mega ramps now costs nearly double what I paid for it in 12/2019! I can easily buy a 48' flat for less than a 22 or 25K rated 40' hotshot trailer and they are much easier to find. And while the rates are playing catch-up I've been looking for a semi...I'll park it instead of running cheap freight.

I love your perspective here. Thank you for bringing value. I completely agree with the future vision being non cdl being significantly harder to work with if at all. That's what drove me to get my permit before the Feb 7th deadline. I fully plan to have my CDL before my year deadline hits. Personally, I have no interest in ever driving a semi however, in fairness, I know I have never been committed to the trucking game in that way. I would much sooner buy a semi and trailer and manage it that way if I went the direction of a semi. Also, it may be good to consider the maintenence across the two. When the maintenence and higher costs of a semi hit they can wipe out a lot of the profits gained in less time than a Hotshot. Not to mention the nightmare of getting parts. (That goes for a semi and hotshsot). One thing for certain is there are definitely pros and cons to both. I don't want to paint a picture that it is all peachy for hotshot. You are spot on about the available loads too. You are bringing true value my friend. And yes, park it before taking cheap freight. The numbers in business are the numbers in business. Yessir!

@@liveyourfree I got my permit before the deadline, but the schools were backed up and had transitioned to the new format...and cost! If you are not going to drive a semi, then test in a CDL hotshot rig (you must test in a rig that requires a CDL). You need to be able to do a proper pretrip inspection. Then you will do a straight line back, and either an offset back or an alley dock. You must know them well. And trust me, it's actually easier to back a semi than a hotshot! I blindside back my hotshot thru a gate into my driveway off a busy road...and then offset to the blind side. After you complete your maneuvers you do your driving test. you must call out every single sign, every bridge weight limit or clearance(or call out no weight limit or clearance). You must look every way at every intersection or side street and call out traffic check. And also call out hazard ahead for any vehicle at or approaching an intersection from either side. All these things adds up points if you miss them. And yeah, it really takes a ton of practice ao yo0u will do it automatically while you are testing.

@@2020HotShotTruckingLLC i hear you and you are spot on with real knowledge. For my situation, I'm not going to a school. No need when I can do what I need to for free. Plenty of resources I have been using to get the details. If i was going semi then we i would definitely be going the school route. Definitely agree it's easier to backup a semi than a bumper pull. Because I have been pulling bumper pull trailers for a while now, I'm comfortable with that. Got the 1 ton truck and properly rated trailer all lined up for the test. I just need to take it. Haven't been in a rush to do it but will take it before the end of summer to get it out of the way.

@@liveyourfree If you have a friend who has recently been thru a school, they can ride along with you and you will pick it up fast. Last time I had to move my enclosed trailer, I was like WTH! Lol! I got spoiled my my GN trailer. I had to pay $$$ because of needing to be able to drive a manual semi. And unless you have a real close friend or family, no-one but a school would let you drive their semi.

@@2020HotShotTruckingLLC lol I follow you brother. Semis are definitely not just sitting around waiting for folks to use them. I actually would take my test in a 1 ton pickup truck and a trailer. The two would have a GVWR of greater than 26,001 lbs which is all i would need to test. I wouldn't have to touch a semi. Now, I will have restrictions but I'm ok with that because I have no need or desire to drive a semi. So items like air breaks or tankers etc are things I'm perfectly fine with having restrictions on. I'd I went the semi route I would just hire someone else to drive it

Great seeing your return. I'm up and legal now - well with the exception of my ELD. Where did you get yours and who installed it for you? Like you, I'm starting with one car hauler. What load board do you use for autos.

Congrats! You have been consistent in your pursuit. I know it's a great feeling. I'm happy for you my friend. I use keep truckin ELD system. I installed it myself. It's just a ob2 plug and play. Took 5 minutes. I'm a big fan of superdispatch and also use Carsarrive.com
