neither an automatic transmission or full time all-wheel-drive are ideal for off road driving. there are huge advantages being able to disengage the front transfer case, and if you're serious about traction you want diff lockers at least on the rear wheels. also I found the Prado's 4 cylinder diesel turbo motor very underpowered. Certainly compared to the V8 TD in the big boys landcruiser.

If you look at Japanese bullet trains, they will test at much higher world record speed but operational speed is much lower than what the machine can potentially go. And they have never had an fatality accident since they’ve been operational in 1960s while having worldly famous earthquakes that occurs all the time.

But still, Toyota should make a decision on where they source out their components as it will damage their reputation if they source out important parts from China. I am blown away how much of the LC is still done by hand, that is a dedication to craftsmanship. I was expecting more of the car to be automated but i am seeing people hand welding and assembling the truck in major steps of the process including the paint booth? Thats just crazy!

I learnt to drive in a 40 series Landcruiser. I put over 500,000km on it. I had a 75 series, a 78 series, a single cab 79 series, another 78 series as well as for work vehicles I also had an 80 series, 105 series and 200 series. My 79 series had 650,000km when I sold it, many hard offroad KM’s on it and the guy I sold it to has added almost another 300,000km to it. We plan to meet up and go camping together on a trip to celebrate her 1,000,000km’s when it’s due to turn over, the idea is to let me drive her over the millionth kilometre 😂. I love the vehicle. At the present time I am awaiting a new 300 series GR Sport which will be my final Landcruiser (as I’m getting very old). Truely it would seem my Landcruisers have worn me out 😂. It’s difficult for me to calculate the distance I’ve travelled in my Landcruisers but I estimate in excess of 4 million kilometres. My work Landcruisers use to travel anywhere up to 2,500km/week and all of my cruisers have travelled across sone of Australia’s most difficult terrain…….it’s how remote living in Australia is. I’m starting to slow up these days, my new GR will probably only travel 4-500km per week, I plan to do a bit of overland travel before I get too old for it. Landcruiser is my true ❤…….. they’ve never let me down and have taken me on many adventures & back again!

@@aflaz171 Sorry I just saw your message. Not really, to be fair, each of them is very different. I loved my last 79 series but to be honest that was only partly because of Toyota and partly because of the attention to detail I had when setting it up. I had an Alloy canopy made and the interior of it set with drawers, refrigerators, battery systems, lighting, storage compartments and other equipment etc. then there’s the way I cared for it, so a fair part of that wasn’t because it was a 79 series. It was uncomfortable in the cab, to the point where I spent thousands on seats, which were comfortable but the cab was still cramped. It was no luxury item but it took me to the most remote locations on the continent. I’m old, I have a spine injury and my ideas have changed now. I am going to order a new Lexus GX550, (it’s still technically a Landcruiser but I’m chasing comfort but something off-road capable to deal with my remote rural location where my home is. The roads are terrible here, I want something that has comfort but can still do rugged. I’ve got a feeling that in some respects the GX will become my favourite but my last 79 series will always remain the one closest to my heart 😂. I realise none of this really answers your question. Sorry 🙏

On my third Landcruiser since 1980, three cars in 44 years tells you everything you need to know, none of them have missed a beat, my current model is a 2018 2.8 diesel with a 6 speed manual gearbox its all the car anyone needs and it gets 36mpg imperial. I am keeping this one as long as I can because its the top spec model and has a custom paint job from the factory and some mechanical mods that were fitted by the dealer when purchased new, the car has taken me all over Europe from Italy to northern Norway. Try that in a Range Rover without any issues .

I was extremely surprised to see how much of these vehicles is still assembled by hand. It obviously makes a difference in the final product.

Love my 17’ prado 150. Only point of improvement: shortly after delivery in winter chassis already started to develop corrosion on the chassis welds! ( live in a area where roads are salty in winters). However my old 2001 range rover chassis did look perfect after 15 years…

Seeing these things still mostly manually produced doesn't exactly give confidence, while the robotic roles are considered 'consistent'.

Doing it manually will give u early detection when something is wrong furthermore though machine is consistent it cantmake adjustment as and when needed

Yes, you could say the same for Rolls-Royce & Bentley where a lot of the work is done by hand... even the grill on a Rolls is filed by hand... by skilled craftsmen with many years of experience doesn't instill much confidence at all. The same could be said of Toyota's 'takumi' ( or master craftsmen ). You might want to have a word with their engineers and takumi with many years of experience on top of Toyota's track record. Tesla at one point attempted full on automation and was a ludicrous success at failing in it.

I will be going with Lexus GX550. for my retirement. I thought about doing it this year but hearing the problems they had with that V-6. I thought I'll wait until 2025 ones comes out. Toyota said they didn't have any problems with the GX engines and it just maybe so. So far I haven't heard of any GX cars having the engine problems like the Tundra did. I like to travel around the Western Region of the US. Up and down the West Coast.

Very interesting, notably no description of rthe chassis manufacture and painting, sadly chassis corrosion is the number one killer of large Toyota 4x4s in cold countries where raod salt is used if the chassis wre galvanised you really could buy one in your twenties and never need to buy another car no matter where you lived. I've owned Toyota 4x4's since the early 90's, never has one let me down.

I would like to also add that there is no proper plastic wheel arch liner fitted to protect the chassis rails and inner front wings a total let down for fans in the colder climate countries

I drive my Toyota HZJ80 Series Landcruiser every day. Production date 1997. Not a speck of rust and an absolute pleasure to drive. Oh! what a feeling.
