I'd say that... Yes, Grandma San Tekka has this ability, and it's about the only adept ability she has, but it's also a huge thing. It should take a room full of geniuses to do the math, and she has a way of understanding it... but that isn't said outright in the book.

I was really Surprised how engaged I was with this book. The Great Disaster was unique and interesting and and shockingly tense.

While I’ve only slightly kept up with HR, seeing the Acolyte stuff at Celebration London really got me interested in fully diving into it. So I plan to get Light of the Jedi as a starting point then proceed from there. I was at least basically aware of and did read summations of the stories involving Vernestra Rwoh, and I was part of the HR panel psyched over her reveal. I think, because I got only so much time, homespace and money, I’ll be getting prose and sequential material involving Vern.

I would highly suggest the audio books for this series. They are very highly produced with sound effects and music throughout. The reader does a great job doing distinctive voices for everyone. It’s great.

So interesting how a good character or two can hook you in. The first part of this book was a little complex to get through but once we landed on the Bell/Loden storyline and learned more about the Nihil protagonists, then I felt the rhythm of the book pull me in.

It took me a bit longer to get into this book, but once I was engaged I was fully invested in what was going on. This book and the two main follow ups to this book were all fantastic. Loved the characters, loved the plot, loved the whole vibe.

One of the Discord mods is guiding them through this (and actually all the books they read for the podcast) so they won't miss anything. This vod is also a bit older already, the guys have since also read the first YA novel Into the Dark. Next up would be A Test of Courage, tho it might still take a moment until they get to that, as it is a quite short novel and thus will be combined with the first 5 issues of both The High Republic and The High Republic Adventures comics, and they have to figure out how to do the whole comic thing best. Which has also been slowed due to other star wars releases (Tales of the Jedi, and now Jedi: Survivor) raising priority for certain books (Master and Apprentice, Dooku: Jedi Lost and Dark Disciple for the Dooku connection, and currently Jedi: Battle Scars, because Jedi: Survivor comes out soon.) They also might want to look into the Ahsoka and Thrawn novels soon for obvious reasons. so tldr, they won't miss any THR stuff, but it could be a minute until they get back to it.

@@Madiba888 The YA novels absolutely. I still maintain that for the best experience, you have to read the Adult, YA and middle grade novels and both the The High Republic and The High Republic Adventures comic runs, and the several 4 issue mini runs connected to the larger whole. but if someone were to ask me what is ABSOLUTELY necessary, it would be the Adult and Young Adult Novels. With that you will still miss a lot of stuff, but you will at least get to experience like 60-70% of the whole story

Eric and Aaron, I am so glad you 2 finally started this era. Guys, look at Light Of The Jedi as the A New Hope of The High Republic. A very good beginning to a new epic tale and era in The SWU. Just like The Rising Storm is The Empire Strikes Back of Phase One. While, The Fallen Star is The Return Of The Jedi of the adult books series in this Project Luminous Initiative. Just know, you 2: The Nihil are NOT the REAL THREAT in the story. Marchion Ro (The Eye Of The Nihil), the legacy of The Sith, Dark Side Alchemy, the fanatical religious cult -- The Path Of The Open Hand, and a hidden, remote planet, seemingly located in The Unknown Regions (Otherspace or The New Beyond, perhaps?), that "seems" to be a nexus for both The Force and...The Anti-Force (first mentioned in The EU novel, The Crystal Star (first published in 1994) )...are THE THREATS. Just keep that in mind, while you're reading Phase One. For Light And Life. May The Force Be With You... P.S. Marie San Tekka (a long distant relative of Future (re)Founder/Member of The Church Of The Force, Lor San Tekka) is a unique character in The SWU: She is what's now known as a Force Savant...meaning, in her early youth, she, by nature, had an innate ability with/affinity for particular powers of The Force, without receiving any kind of instruction or training by other Force-sensitives, Force-users, or Jedi. I have a strong feeling that her organic connection to The Force will be the difference-maker in defeating the evil machinations of Marchion Ro and his horrific tools of destruction.

I love this book, it gives me the feeling of legends where we follow great cosmic events and which serve as part of a book series as I like a lot of canonical books and comics so I always feel with them that they serve more like DLC for movies series and games little things happen in them. Additionally, once you said that you prefer the stories of the movie characters in the books because you know them, but I prefer the original characters and the events as far away from the movies as possible, thanks to which the writers have more creative freedom and can afford more, like in High Republic or Tales of Jedi comics (those with Exar Kun). When Bioware can choose to in which period they want to make RPG game, they choose the Old Republic over the Clone Wars period because they would have more creative freedom.

I loved how big this book felt and how they laid things out but i will say going forward i would just look up all like the jedi and some of the characters pictures in the star wars website of the high republic to keep the characters more orderly in your head. I found this very helpful also do not sleep on the young adult books. Great discussion guys it's so nice to see more people get into the High Republic they have a really special thing going here. The audible books really help as well get into it.

YES! FINALLY! Can't wait to talk about this with you tbh. I just love this era so much (might be my favorite). I read the three adult novels from Phase I but am now reading the YA as well because I love some of the characters that appear in them and I'm really curious about what they were doing during this crisis and gotta say: If Light of the Jedi is a MASTERPICE (it is), Into the Dark is really fucking good. I love when we met Jedi that aren't as gifted as some of the protagonists.

Also: Don't worry about Phase II (150 years PRIOR to LotJ). I started the comics and could not keep up so I will read the adult novels after Ahsoka if I can and if not... after Phase III, which arrives this Fall. Porter Engle has a comic and is DELIGHTFUL but I've had a hard time getting into this phase. I think the main reason is because I'm still into Phase I and it all is very overwhelming? 'Cause there's plenty of quality, so that's not the issue. (I really want to read the two latest Thrawn trilogies before august, lol.)

The adult books are significantly better than the comics in phase 1. The marvel comics are so low energy and nothing exciting really happens.

I found the whole concept of this era very boring, tried to get into it at the start but the Jedi at their highet of power is like the prequel era but 1000X which is something which we have seen already, I wish to see the Old Republic era which is something totaly new in SW canon and liveaction.

My biggest problem with High Republic era is they made Jedi wore shinny vain gold robe and says this is Jedi's Prime for whole 25,000 years republic history. And the "for the light and life" and "we're all Republic" slogan thing sounds stupid and off even for a YA book, and this is an adult novel. Also every book LFL published after 2020 all mentions HR era at least once, it feels annoying and nonsense, like the whole galaxy only teach history about HR in their history lesson.

Even in legends most of that 25,000 history was pretty hard to come by at this point, so it’s the “peak” of the Jedi between the fall of the old Republic and the fall of Galactic republic. It’s like WWII or the 1950’s and other eras in our world we always talk about. shiny on the surface, more going on underneath. But yeah I do agree they have been over doing putting the high republic in everything, though I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how people felt back in the prequels and references to that showing up in all of the books and comics.

@@luckysix1015 I just really don’t like the “Jedi wearing beautiful golden clothes” conception, it feels so un-Jedi, yet at the same time, they’re seriously saying these people are the best Jedi. However, I felt PT Jedi are more disciplined and modest as a whole than HR Jedi. HR Jedi also felt too Western, without the culture mixed feelings of PT Jedi and the Eastern culture vibe of OT Jedi. I do notice HR is more like an after-war peaceful period just like you say, but they also always picture it like the Renaissance of gffa, which makes me want to roll my eyes. Also, I can’t stand they make a Wookiee Jedi wearing clothes. Cultural diversity of HR seems hypocritical.

But didnt they say in the book that the beautiful golden robes were just ceramonial, and they were only wearing them for the completion of starlight beacon? In artwork most of the time theyre not even wearing the robes.

@@magicconchshell I‘d read that paragraph, but I don’t think Jedi should have ceremonial outfits at all. They are space monks, living in an ascetic way, almost didn’t have any personal property, and focus on spiritual matters more than material matters, why do they need these gorgeous luxury clothes only for good-looking? Jedi in PT didn’t have special outfits, if HR Jedi were better than PT’s fallen Jedi, neither should they. For this aspect, I think PT Jedi are true Jedi, HR Jedi looks too peacockish and less independent to me.

I think actions and behavior are a little more important to what a jedi should be rather than how nice their ceremonial robes are. Hell even monks in real life can have beautiful robes.

yes, phantom menace says that the Sith have been gone for 1000 years (tho we of course know they are in hiding), so the Jedi Order can't learn about any sith without breaking canon. Luckily the High Republic avoids this with the small technicality of... *checks notes* ...not having any sith or similar agents of the dark side, or any force user villains at all.
