HI BILLY, Just made your passive phone speaker, used scrap Cedar and ply that I had lying about on the floor. I guessed the measurements based on my wife's mobile phone with leather protective cover. It worked a treat, much better tone. So the next thing to do is take it to my Men's Shed for show and tell and get the guys to all make a few. I didn't make one fore myself as I don't own a mobile phone. Cheers

Very nice project, thanks. You are the first one who talks about which kind of wood is being used in the project. That is a nice inspiration. Unfortunately, the template you mentioned in your video is no more available at the link you provided. What a pity🥲.

Cool little project - one can make it simpler by not doing front baffle or go overboard and add angled back to improve sound. Thanks!

I made one a few years ago that had a plywood center with walnut top, bottom & face. On the face I drilled random holes for the sound and 4 plywood dowels (two per side) for decoration. I find that the passive speaker has a warmer tone to it.

Cool! Have you tried lining the box with acoustic foam or PolyFill? I know that really helps clean up those mid and higher frequency peaks and reverberations. That'd be an easy and cool test to do on this.

These videos are just great ! Quick enough, but not to quick, still giving us good information and tips to get the project done. Assuming we have certain knowledge, skills. Thanks ! 👍

Is there any difference between the sound with and without the front piece?

I wonder if stereo effect would improve if a thin divider was placed to create left and right volumes.

If nothing else, it will look cool on my desk. May try to add a charging outlet instead, since my mic/speaker is on top.

I just wish your front, hole plate, had the walnut to the edge instead of all maple. Aesthetically speaking I think it would look a little better. That being said, nice job.

Um ... I think that pretty speaker-looking cover actually blocks some of the sound you worked so hard to enhance. AND, putting the mic directly in front of the speaker will sound different than standing in the room and listening. Just my thoughts - BUT the design is great and I'm thinking of how to overcome blocking the sound now. 🤔

ok, hold on a minute. there was just 'i want a passive speaker' then *poof* magic happens and you have a template. just wondering, where did the shape you made come from? did you just decide 'hey this looks good', or did you get the shape from somewhere else? awesome project though - i'll have to give it a try

Another reason to do this is that you want the phone upright when its on your desk, not lying flat, so you can see the messages coming in 😅

It enhances the mids a lot somewhere about 1kHz which makes it louder but would be exactly the frequency you would dial away when using an equalizer. So no, to me the sound without the speaker is better, sorry

I wouldn't call it a passive speaker.. more like a horn. A passive speaker is a speaker that reacts to the air movement created by an active speaker, real hi-fi systems.. As far as phone stuff goes, again it's acting more like a horn. Yes, I said "hi-fi"..

that cap in front of it ruins the whole project man. Withou it it would sound even louder and better.

It was much better straight out of the phone, sorry
@beck645

It looks very nice but doesn’t do anything but hold the phone. The sound that reflects out will be colored by the wood surfaces and resonances of the case. The sound will be far more accurate coming directly from the phone. Retired speaker engineer.

I built a different design out of red oak and these do seem to improve the sound. I’m going to try this one. Maybe plywood for the center and walnut for the top and bottom.
@beck645
@beck645 Жыл бұрын
@@williammackie6701 you can change the tonal characteristics and redirect the sound but you never get something for nothing. That’s just a myth that you can. If you believe it sounds better then you have achieved your goal.
