So in this video, we will build together the Moog DFAM with free available modules in VCV Rack, recreating almost all of its features like the velocity sequencer, pitch sequencer, Trigger and Advance buttons, all the different modulations and more. Man, I had so much fun doing this...
Here is the patch and the Strip file - patchstorage.com/lets-build-t...
I updated the patch to work with VCV 2 and instead of a Strip file, I saved it as a selection that you can load under the file menu.

I really am enjoying this patch. Not only did I get a fun rhythm toy I learned a lot about modular systems. I swapped the filter and added a couple of quantizers so I can control the pitch better when I want to use it more diatonically. I also attached the advance to the first trigger so when I am scrolling through I can hear the hits. Thanks.

I loaded this patch again the other day after a longer period of time, because I had a lack of inspiration that day. Man, what a fun thing. I loaded the strip into my default template (a mixer and some send effects). I mapped some controls to my midi-controller, started recording and dived into this lovely virtual machine. Thank you so much for this patch, Mr. Cohen. Even at low clock-rates and with some delay this thing is a beast in sounds. Party on.

As a proud user of DFAM, as said before, I only start now understanding its technical fundamentals. Thank you, thank you, oh man. I will make another coffee deposit. Some (maybe stupid) questions though (I am just a 59 year old beginner with only 2 years experience). How do you know the FM modulation of VCO1 and 2 is linear? Why do you connect the hard sync switch high input, to square out of VCO1? How do you know the VCF of DFAM is 4 pole? Why is pitch set to -3V to +3V and velocity set 0V to +10V? What about the VCA EG fast and slow switch? What VCV design modifications are needed for Jared McFarland's question (maybe an update of this patch for an even better understanding of the hardware wiring of DFAM?)?
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed it :) About the FM and sync and VCF, I just looked at the manual. The manuals from Moog are quite informative. About the velocity, the VCA will work with voltage that goes between 0-10v so that's why I have it set this way. And for the pitch, each volt is one octave so having 3 octaves range down and up is quite enough.

Excellent video I just spend 47 minutes following along having a blast not realizing it's time for work :), Is there a shortcut button for picking the colours for the wire? or does it just cycle. Also I never thought about labeling before it makes it so much easier to view.

The triangle wave in vults oscillator is based on my own 0-coast.(I sampled the oscillator from my unit for him). I do hope to see a vcvrack version of the full 0-coast that would be close to my own unit someday :D

Oh, I didn't know that about the Vult wave. For which oscillator you made the sample? Anyway, I hope to publish the video next week, and I have to be honest, I didn't aim for the same sound as the O Coast but rather its spirit. But it still sounds nice and I will share the patch of course so you can exchange the oscillator I've used.

@@OmriCohen-Music its the triangle wave in Vessek. its not 100% accurate to my 0-coast since leonardo ran it through his optimisation algorithms to not make it too cpu heavy but at one point in the early betas it was pretty accurate. but from what i understand the final version is still 95-96% accurate to my 0-coast, specially at The lower notes when the wave gets all wobbly and not a triangle at all (which is what gives the 0-coast its unique sound). The Square wave is from a moog i believe.

Well, I hope that a VST version of VCV will come out soon but for now you can't really load it in any DAW...
@zachary4670
@zachary4670 4 жыл бұрын
What you CAN do is download a module that allows you to record. Then you can record straight from VCV onto your desktop, then import it into your DAW. A little clumsy, but hey. Another think you could do (if you have two computers) is send the output from VcV rack to an amp, and then record your amp like you would a guitar.

Hi Omri, can you explain why you use a mixer to combine the manual trigger and the clock instead of a logical OR-gate? Because it seems to me that mixing them would cause the output to be twice as high if clock and trigger come in at the same time, no?
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Well, using an OR logic would be better yes, but I'm not really mixing the signals because they're not supposed to happen at the same time, it's more of combining them I guess, but yes, an OR logic would make more sense. Thanks for this :)

Wow Thanks a lot for this tutorial! Its a lot of fun expecially if controlled by a mapped Novation LCXL! I have a general question about this technique of rebuilding existing synths in vcv rack and i try to formulate it the clearest i can. Would it be possible as really last step of this process to „build“ a final flexible module with the same or similar layout as the real synth, in order to have a clearer image of the parameters and knobs as they are in the reference and map them on the same project ? I dont know if thats clear, but in this case it would be a compact group of modules looking like the dfam, where just the „dfam“ knobs would be internally mapped,, it would make the final result more accessible… hope its clear ……… thanks a lot!!!
