I'm actually quite impressed with the SNES background, the sin actually hides behind the rocks in the background layer, and all the other versions basically take after the genesis version.

I like certain crossplaform releases on the SNes rather on the genesis though. Rock & Roll Racing has one my very favorite soundtracks on the SNes, but sounds like shit in the Genesis. wtf.
@iwanttocomplain8 жыл бұрын
You needed a bit of skill to get the SMD Yamaha FM chip really cooking. SNES's sample based sound chip lacked the tonal range of a true FM chip due to the amount of compression needed, effectively cutting out the top and low end of the spectrum as well as losing fidelity like a radio which is why SNES games often sound a bit muffled.
@WeskerSega8 жыл бұрын
It may have been designed for the Mega Drive but if you have a Mega-CD then there's no point on getting the Mega Drive version, the Mega-CD version is a better choice. Plus the Windows version which is a conversion of the Mega-CD version is also a good choice.
@RetroArcadeGuy8 жыл бұрын
Albert Wesker Yeah, of course. Earthworm Jim CD aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the way! But talking on non-cd based consoles and if you lacked the Sega/Mega CD expansion, still the Megadrive version is the one to go. There's also the pirated version of Earthworm Jim on the NES and is called Earthworm Jim 3. Also, there was a port for DSiware, but it doesn't have Who turned out the lights stage or any of the extra stages besides the Genesis exclusive level. Also one of the Down the Tubes levels is cut short in the DSiware version for some reason. I love the differences made in the SNES versions of 1 and 2, especially the enhanced versions of the music running on the SNES sound chip. The SNES version makes more sense, when you think about it. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE GBA VERSION OF EARTHWORM JIM!!! I've played it before, and while it may LOOK pretty, the gameplay is complete and utter garbage! The game is obviously a port of the SNES version, but they failed to properly recreate the game engine! In fact, you can tell that something is off, just by watching the game footage, and comparing it to other Earthworm Jim ports, featured in this same video! It may LOOK good, but it plays very poorly! In fact, it's right at the bottom of the barrel of inexcusably bad GBA ports, right next to Mortal Kombat Advance and Sonic the Hedgehog: Genesis!
@silenceofthehills10 жыл бұрын
You can understand my pain when I read the Tips&Tricks review, thought it was going to have only slightly less animation frames here and there as they said, then scraped up money just to get the darn thing. I thought I was getting the good ol' Genesis game I played in the day, or the SNES game, in the palm of my hands, with all those beautiful animations and colors gracing the colorful and crisp LCD screen! I immediately knew something was wrong in the car when I saw a glimpse of Jim's jump cycle in the dark car when I pressed B to shoot, and heard the horrid gun sounds when pressing A. The game effort was literally worse than the portable versions of before! The gameplay was toned in challenge and the humor non-existent due to the slower enemy animations and primitive physics. Seriously, what were all the reviewers on at Gamespot and all these other gaming sites or on all these gaming mags! All I could love about it were the songs!
@SemiJuggaloNumber210 жыл бұрын
The Hills of Silence Yeah, dude. I understand that pain all too well. Take Fatal Fury, for instance. Back in '93, I had never heard of the game, until a friend of mine told me about it. He said it was a really cool fighting game, just like Street Fighter II, but you could fight on different planes. Months later, at another friend's house, I saw the game at a Blockbuster Video and we rented it. We took it home and we played it, all weekend long! I especially loved how the story unfolded via cutscenes, in Arcade Mode. Basically, it was a really cool alternative to SFII! Some time later that same year, at another Blockbuster, I saw Fatal Fury again! Except, this time, it was for the Super Nintendo! Needless to say, I rented that sucker and took it home, expecting to have just as much fun as I did with the Genesis game! Except, when I turned it on, I noticed the first problem... The music sucked! It sounded really restrained, compared to how lively and adrenaline-pumping the Genesis version was. It didn't stop there, either. As I played the game, I noticed that there were even MORE problems, besides the music... -Shitty sound effects! -No dual-planed fighting! -Slower paced gameplay! -Sloppy controls! -Delayed special moves! -Incredibly cheap AI! -In VS Mode, only player two can select from the full roster... Player one is stuck with three characters! -All story cutscenes replaced by VS screen character mugshots! -LOADING SCREENS! Sure, the SNES version had two boss characters, who were absent from the Genesis version, but that alone doesn't make up for the fact that it was a terrible, terrible arcade port! That is still, to this day, one of the biggest betrayals I ever experienced as a gamer! By all logic, the SNES should have been capable of a great Fatal Fury port! So why did Takara feel the need to do such a horrid job, while they clearly made a much better effort on the Genesis version?!
@Snotnarok10 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's amazing how the GB one looks more playable than the GBA port, I have no idea what happened, it's more powerful than the Gen and SNES so why didn't it wind up being a awesome mix of the two's best features? 2 wasn't good either
@silenceofthehills10 жыл бұрын
Snotnarok To think about it now, even the HD version's a little messed up. The whipping isn't as fast, and most importantly, the animations also still suffer. The animation is what delivers the comedy, like the ending, but you look at the ending of the HD version, and it's choppy and sloppy. Jim just slides away as he droops off, with his animation all off center and shifting all over the place. In the original, that animation played out like a plain and simple cartoon animation and was part of the comedy, his reaction and disappointment. That's also the major problem of the GBA version when it comes to the humor. I especially don't like Jim's jumping animation cycle. Like, when he falls, he's stuck in suspended animation and doesn't flail. And then, his running jump animation is pretty bad too when you actually look at it. It's like he never finishes his cycle before freezing mid-air or something. I also hate that they copypasta one foot during his standing animation, as it just looks weird, and when you shoot or whip, it changes back into the original bigger foot of the original. Lastly, I wish they just went back and re-digitized the original hand-drawn animations they used for the game. They could have also redrawn the hand drawn animations as close as possible and repainted the backdrops so that the game looks like a real cartoon too, as was intended. Instead, it looks like they just sent the original sprites through a ton of filters that rounds everything out, even if it is true they re-animated this and that. There shouldn't be any excuse with the hd version, as its on superior hardware.
@SemiJuggaloNumber210 жыл бұрын
I played the HD version on my friend's PS3, and it didn't seem all that bad. Then again, I will admit that it's been a few years since then, and I don't exactly recall any glaring flaws. It was still a much better port than the GBA version.

In my opinion Best Graphics: Windows Best Sound: Windows (The Soundtrack and voiceovers may be identical to the Sega CD and MS-DOS, but it's definitely sounds a lot more clear on Windows.) Best Controls: Genesis (This is one of the few instances where the Genesis 3 button controller is superior to the SNES controller in a game. It gives you the exact amount of buttons you need to play the game which you can press on a whim. And Jim just seems to be the most responsive here compared to other versions.)

OK. Give me a few days. Where do you want me to post them too? Here?

Mega CD/Sega CD the best version for sure. It has the best soundtrack + completely new areas which aren't in the SNES or MD/GEN versions. If you own Sega's CD addon, you NEED this game.

I tend to focus on the original, classic versions. I don't like to add the New generation consoles. A release on one of these consoles are usually on par with the original. And in some cases when a game get's revamped such as pac man for instance it's not the original gameplay. This is why I don't add them.
