The questions "What is he like?" and "What does he look like?" inquire about different aspects of a person. 1. **"What is he like?"**: This question is asking about the person's personality, character, or behavior. For example, the response might include descriptions such as kind, funny, shy, outgoing, intelligent, etc. However, people do sometimes reply with physical traits. 2. **"What does he look like?"**: This question is asking about the person's physical appearance. For example, the response might include descriptions such as tall, short, having brown hair, blue eyes, wearing glasses, etc. In summary: - "What is he like?" = personality and character traits. - "What does he look like?" = physical appearance.

Sir, i have worked here for 10 years or i have been working here for 10 years. Which one is correct?
@englishspeaking3607 ай бұрын
Excellent question... Both sentences can be correct, but they are used in slightly different contexts. "I have worked here for 10 years." This sentence indicates that your total time at the job is 10 years, but it doesn't specify if you are currently still working there or if you might have stopped recently. "I have been working here for 10 years." This sentence emphasizes that you are currently still working at the job and have been doing so continuously for the past 10 years. If you want to make it clear that you are still employed there, "I have been working here for 10 years" is the better choice.

One more doubt sir, I have been trying to fix this can i use i am trying to fix this instead of that sentence?
@englishspeaking3607 ай бұрын
@nivetha3716 Hi! The difference between "I've been trying to fix this" and "I am trying to fix this" lies in the tense and the emphasis on the duration of the action: "I've been trying to fix this" (Present Perfect Continuous): Emphasizes that the effort to fix the issue started in the past and continues up to the present moment. Suggests that the action has been ongoing for some time and might still be in progress. Example: "I've been trying to fix this for hours." "I am trying to fix this" (Present Continuous): Indicates that the action of trying to fix the issue is happening right now, at the present moment. Does not necessarily imply how long the effort has been going on. Example: "I am trying to fix this right now." In summary, "I've been trying to fix this" highlights the duration and continuity of the action, while "I am trying to fix this" focuses on the present moment without indicating the length of time. I hope this helps! 🤩

Hi, if I say "I have been living here for years.", does it mean that I have more possibility to stay here than "I have lived here for years."?
@englishspeaking3607 ай бұрын
Hi! That is a great question and that's why English is sometimes difficult. The difference between "I have lived here for years" and "I have been living here for years" lies in the subtle nuances of emphasis and aspect in English grammar: "I have lived here for years": This sentence uses the present perfect tense. It emphasizes the fact that the action (living here) has been completed up to the present moment. It suggests a sense of permanence or a completed state. It can imply that the speaker may or may not continue to live there in the future. "I have been living here for years": This sentence uses the present perfect continuous tense. It emphasizes the ongoing nature of the action. It highlights the duration and the process of living here. It implies that the speaker is still living there and suggests the action is likely to continue into the future. Example Contexts: If someone asks about your current residence and you want to convey that you have been living there for a long time and are still living there, you might say, "I have been living here for years." If you want to emphasize the total time spent living there without focusing on the continuous nature, or if you're referring to a period that includes but may not extend to the present, you might say, "I have lived here for years." In summary, "I have been living here for years" emphasizes the ongoing and continuous aspect of living there, while "I have lived here for years" focuses on the total time span of residence up to the present moment.

Bonjour, j’ai une question SVP. Dans la phrase suivante : The leaves fell from the tree in autumn. Le verbe est au passé??? Pourtant, si je fais l’analyse de cette phrase, il y a une action passée : les feuilles sont tombées et le résultat dans le présent est qu’il y en a plus, pourquoi alors on utilise le Simple Past et non le Présent Perfect??? Je vous remercie d’avance de me répondre, car j’ai un gros ??? Merci beaucoup et bonne journée! 🇨🇦
@englishspeaking3607 ай бұрын
Hello Linda! There are a few issues to consider here. First, the sentence should be "The leaves fall from the tree in autumn" because it's a fact and it happens every autumn. If however we consider the sentence as it is now, then the past time marker 'in autumn' indicate that the past tense should be used. Whenever there's a time marker, the present perfect cannot be used. Moreover, you must realize that the focus on the present result is decided by the author, not by the reader. In this case, the author simply wanted to focus on the fact that the leaves fell in autumn, not on the fact that the leaves are on the ground and that he has to clean up his backyard. Does that make sense?

Bonjour, désolée de vous déranger à nouveau. J’ai une autre phrase dont je ne comprends pas le temps du verbe. The birds flew south for the winter. 🇨🇦
@englishspeaking3607 ай бұрын
Hello Linda! Sorry for the late reply. Busy week. The birds flew south for the winter. This sentence simply states that the birds flew in a southern direction to spend the winter. It directly conveys the idea of migration. The birds flew away south for the winter. This sentence adds the word "away," which emphasizes the departure or movement away from the current location. It suggests not only the direction of the flight (south) but also the fact that the birds are leaving their current place behind. In summary, "flew south" focuses on the direction of the flight, while "flew away south" highlights both the departure from the current location and the direction.
@englishspeaking3607 ай бұрын
Like Imentionedin my previous reply, the result is decided by the author, not by the reader of the sentence. If the author only meant that the birds left at some point in the past, the simple past is fine. If, however, a result was highlighted by the author, then the present perfect would be used. For example: The seeds she left on the windowsill for the birds are still there. The birds have flown south for the winter. The birds have left, so they haven't eaten the seeds. Does it make sense?

hi, I'm trying to think in english, I've a question for you: Is it correct to say : I'm so tired , I wish I were in bed ! ? I asked native speaker but he doesn't know grammar. Can I say it this way: I'm so tired, I wish I went to bed, I'm so tired , I wish I had gone to bed, I'm so tired I wish I have gone to bed Regards!

Hello! Here are several ways to convey the same sentiment with correct grammar: I'm so tired, I wish I were in bed. I'm so tired, I wish I went to bed earlier. I'm so tired, I wish I had gone to bed earlier. However, the phrase "I'm so tired, I wish I have gone to bed" is not grammatically correct. Here are a few more correct alternatives: I'm so tired, I wish I could go to bed right now. I'm so tired, I wish I was already in bed. I'm so tired, I wish I were sleeping. I'm so tired, I wish I had already gone to bed. I'm so tired, I wish I were lying in bed. Each of these variations accurately expresses the desire to be in bed due to being tired.

"They've been leaving early for vacation recently". Well. - How many times do they have vacations in a year ?.

Hi! Interesting observation. Think about a manager at a company that employs many people. The manager could be talking about his 200 employees leaving early for their individual vacation. All of his employees have been leaving early for their vacation recently. Does that make sense?
