We're back with another decluttering the closet video! I do apologize for the slightly longer run time. It has been chopped down from it's original 30 minutes. But I just couldn't cut any more.
Find me everywhere I am on the Internet here: timchilders.bi....
I started this channel in order to document life as it gets lived. It's about where I live, how I live, where I travel, why I travel, and so much more. Eclectic is a good word for the content to be found here. I hope you will come along for the ride!

I agree! Longer video to see the entire process is very helpful. Also it was nice to hear the title’s & authors of the books you recommended. I would also be interested in seeing a more in depth declutter of the tools - the reasons you let go of one item vs keeping another. Very interesting to see the thought processes. Please do not be embarrassed by any of this process, you are helping us all by sharing your journey. Thank you for sharing. Blessings! 😊

Another interesting video. As I watched, I wondered what your vision was. Do you have an office space or reading area with a bookshelf where you can keep those books? Will one storage space be for actual storage (e.g., Christmas stuff), and another will become a workroom for your tools? I enjoy these videos because they tell the story of a newly retired man sorting through his past to try to find the path to his future. I especially enjoy your moments of insight and candor.

Came back to say-you are doing so great! I on the other hand....NOT so great! LoL. The kitchen items you labeled "trash" are not trash. Donate, donate, donate! There are people who have nothing, absolutely nothing and are starting their life needing everything to set up a home. And that color green has been popular for the last year. And lots of us don't care what the latest Instagram cool color is-we love what we love.❤️ Would like to ask you to please consider finding another thrift store to donate to. Google what the CEO of Goodwill makes and you will be disgusted. People donate to his company, he turns around and sells it - sometimes for more money than it cost retail, and the employees make pennies. I stopped donating there many years ago and switched to faith based thrift stores in my community that use the money made for their mission projects. I also donate and shop at thrifts that employ people that are starting their life over. Their prices are all low, much much lower selling prices than Goodwill. Just my two cents and realize this could be something that other folks don't know about.

Wait a minute! When you say something goes into the "trash" pile, you really mean "thrift store", right? Because I'd hate to see those re-useables go into your local land fill even if you do think no one would like them, someone will. As a veteran of many thrift store drops, I want to suggest you look into the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore--they can take those bi-fold doors, tools and other garage type stuff off your hands. One more tip, find a nice charity thrift store that funds something you feel worthwhile--I'm sure there's several local shops waiting for the spoils from your next declutter event.

The rest of the stuff you trashed would go in my trash heap as well. Can't wait to see how you handle the tools. I worked for quite a number of years in the tool crib of a large nuclear power complex here in Canada and was able to put that knowledge to use when I retired and had to straighten out the tools that my Dad had accumulated before he passed. One thing that may make it easier than loading up your car and going to the Goodwill or Habitat or the dump or multiple places. It depends on where you live though. I live on a fairly busy corner in a large suburban area and I put stuff down at the end of my driveway with a big free sign. Usually it’s gone within 45 minutes. I’ve almost never had anything left over, very rarely.

W-I-S-H the Video would've been at LEAST "1-2" Hrs. ! ! "De-Cluttering," "Purging" as well as "Organizing" are FUN to Me.🙂 Watching 👀 Other's Do It is too. I'm in the Backround . . . "Trying" to Help.😃 We are in our " 70's." You Only NEED So Much STUFF ! ! People should "Count" Each and Every Item just In "1" Room. You'd Be AMAZED. It Seem's that "Intension's" are Really Actual "Dillusion's" sometime's. Ex: Exercise Equipment. We have "4" Exercise Machine's and a Big Ole' Tanning-Bed in an Extra Room. All They have Really Been are " Dust-Collector's." Most People Have a Walker, Crutches or a Wheel-Chair . . . Just In Case. Many are In Need and Can't Get Them. To Me, They are Like an " Omen." Christmas STUFF . . . If People Have Kid's, it is Really Much More Understandable to Have More. The Question that I've Alway's Pondered Upon is, WHY Don't People "Celebrate" (So to Speak) Each and Every Day of LIFE that They Are Given, By just Being H🙂PPY, JOYFUL and ENTHUSIASTIC. (Thanking GOD For It Is a Given.) Then there are Those Dreaded but Necessary (Or NOT) T-o-o-l-'s . . . OMG ! ! A Tough One When we're NOT In "Agreement" with a Spouse or Significant Other.😬 Truly, It Is S-O-O F-R-E-E-I-N-G to NOT HAVE All the CRAP. (STUFF)

I had a room of similar boxes and things to declutter the past few months. I was amazed at how much was just trash and how it was taking up valuable storage space for years. Thankfully I've got rid of most of it now, as my mom passed away in May and now I have all her things to deal with. And I didn't need to put her things in storage, as I have room to deal with it. It just seems never to end, this decluttering process. So it's very helpful to see videos like this, to know one is not alone in this often overwhelming process, so thank you!

Mr. Tim, I envy you're getting it done! I had 3 storage units of items. Household as well as leftover items when I used to sell at flea markets. Plus the garage. I have closed up two units but still have one that is full and in a state we no longer live in. But on a positive note, I have gone through it the summers when I visit family, and have consolidated it, and it is now in a smaller unit. But with retirement in a few years, it gives much stress knowing it's there and needs to be dealt with. But I am happy to have already relieved myself of two units!

I personally enjoy seeing before and after photos/clips and the whole process, even if parts of the video are sped up. I mean if you're just standing there trying to decide what to do with an item for 5+ minutes, of course that can be cut. I think if viewers don't want to watch a long video, they can always watch part of it and come back to it later. You can always stretch one session of filming into multiple videos too. Post the shorter 10 minute version and the extended 60 minute version too.

Hi, I know about deccluttering, it's a lot of work. Some people take years and years depending on how much stuff they have. Tools deccluttering is a very daunting task. However, you have a workbench. Do yourself a favor. Do this for 15 minutes at a time and when you want to go further, then do so. 15 minutes is nothing compared to a whole day or a whole week. Yes, it will take longer but you will not get frustrated doing everything in one day. You can also video every 15 minutes if you want to and then edit out what you want to show. Just a suggestion.

It hurt me to see you discard some of that kitchen stuff. Goodwill and other thrift shops are looking for donations of Tupperware and iron skillets. They can often be refreshed and cleaned, so sell well. Iron fry pans can be cleaned up with some elbow grease. I saw a vid on You Tube on how to restore crusty old iron fry pans. The transformation was amazing! Like new! Yes they needed some elbow grease. I just bought a couple nice sturdy used Tupperware storage containers at Goodwill for bargain prices, saving myself a lot of money. I now have the bug proof storage I needed for in my pantry. I'm all for decluttering !! but keep in mind what others might like or need to buy when shopping at thrift stores and donate. Ask at the stores what sells, if in doubt. Now, I have to go drop off my own recently decluttered items. I'll stop at the Pet charity thrift store first. They get 1st dibs.

You put a box for trash that could go to Goodwill. Let them sort through it. I can just imagine those stuffed animals cleaned and donated to children in a hospital or a shelter. I can understand you wanting to declutter but if I didn't save a few of my old 'fat' clothes I would have had to go buy some bigger clothes for after my surgery and I'm about saving money also. I like to declutter but I'm not just going to toss things out. Besides I don't see where you have a clutter problem to begin with. Newly retired means you don't know what to do with yourself. Tim, you sure triggered a lot of people with that cast iron skillet! You had better steel yourself for the tool declutter. Remember to always say donate. Seems to keep the peace. 😉

Your family will later thankyou for cleaning out your “ stuff”. I’m currently helping one of my daughter’s go through stuff at her house. In June her husband suddenly passed away. He had started sorting through his mom’s household stuff. My daughter is about finished with distributing things to her husband’s family. He had so many tools. A male family member will organize and sort them all out and decide what to keep and what to sell. As seasons change in the journey of life we need different things to function. So many people hang on to things thinking they’ll need something again when in reality they won’t.

Oh you should see my basement yours is clean compared to mine I can’t get my husband to through out a thing makes me nuts and I want to get rid of so much and he hinders that. Thank for another great video and hey good tips and declutter process takes time so I can watch for 30 mins no problem so far I’ve learned alot from your journey to declutter 😊

Boy, do I relate to that. Mine just won't go through things to help purge. It's partly laziness, partly "I might need it one day" or nostalgia. What he doesn't realize is I purge some of his stuff all the time and he never misses it. There are categories that I can't purge however, which are numerous and a problem.

I struggle with this issue as well. how do we know when something can be re used? when the charity shops spend so much money in disposing the unwanted items do we support the shop or the dumpster company? it gets tricky...

Good for you for ASKING what your kids want and not just showing up at their door with random items. Lots of parents are guilty of not wanting to make the tough decisions (or would rather someone else declutters it) and passing that on to their kids. 😢

This is just what I needed to kick off my second day of closet cleaning. First day (part of one closet) I got rid of three large trash bags of stuff. It’s like going on a (so far successful) closet diet. I feel lighter!

Love watching your videos. I get what you mean by keeping crap and wondering why. When I did the full decluttering, I came across stuff I didn’t even remember I had piled up in the garage and the junk room - an entire 10’ x 10’ (3 meter x 3 meter) bedroom. I applaud and encourage you for continuing on your decluttering journey.

I've only just found one of your videos today's and I'm looking forward to watching these videos. I do have 3 car's and heaps of crap around the house. I don't think I will part with my car's because I use them all often and I enjoy them. So I think that because I enjoy them it's not bad to have them Lol I hope you can help me part with the crap I never use ❤ I think I should get rid of the crap I don't need but enjoy the things I like like my car's.😊

Font approval! 😄 Also, I should mention that I am impressed with your choice of cardboard boxes to store "crap" in for 20 years: McDonald's French fry boxes! I've worked at McDonald's for over 42 years so I'm taking that as confirmation I should be following you and another reason I'm enjoying watching your videos! I'm sure you think it's incidental, but it's a connection of some sort! Nice job decluttering; very quick decision-making. Very inspiring, thanks.

For holiday decorations - I purge before and after the season now. When I get things out... there's usually a few decorations I don't love anymore that can be donated. And at the end of the season - there's inevitably a few things I never used or put out and I donate those too.

Yes, those are the best times to declutter Christmas stuff, before and after. Before, its the things that don't seem to want to be displayed this year... and after, it's the things that just didn't work well and I don't want to store, or they don't look great any more. Which reminds me... I REALLY need to go through the Halloween box in the attic before October.

I am not sure why 10 minutes is your goal. Most cleaning/decluttering videos are much longer and actually showing all the details that are skipped in an hgtv style show is the whole point of youtube. I mostly watch 30 minute plus videos. 10 mins is just like reading the cliff notes, to use a teacher analogy. 😂🎉. Keep up the good work and show us all the steps, we love that stuff.

I've got to say Tim, I was relieved to find out that "the shoe" from your thumbnail was not/is not yours😅 Also, I wouldn't mind longer videos, kept at or under 30 minutes. You are doing great with the decluttering. Will we ever get to meet your Mother? May God Bless you & keep you healthy & safe!!

In summer of 2020 I couldn’t go anywhere due to lockdown so in July I put all the Christmas decorations in the den floor. I sorted through it all, gave the children their things they’d made or had as children. I then decorated two trees and put them in Christmas tree bags I’d bought at the Dollar Store. I boxed up what I wanted then everything else was sold or given away. About a year later I relocated and was thankful I had done that. Last year I decided to keep the trees out on display so I’ve covered them with long plastic bags from the dry cleaners. I feel so much lighter after downsizing and letting go of things that no longer served me. Keep the videos coming.

I have stuff in the basement I don't know why it's there too. My mom would tuck things away for later when that season or season of life was done and I started doing the same. Really most of that type of stuff needs to be dealt with on the spot instead of saved or procrastinated on. Just like containers being a waste of money most of the time. You live and learn. You get all the tools you need out and set up you could really get working on whatever you're aiming for

Hi Tim, it is the best feeling decluttering one's home, especially concentrating on all the storage areas. I have probably now removed around 80% of clutter from my home, and it brings me a lot of joy seeing my home now clutter free. Every item in my house has a home, and I am no longer buying new stuff to replace what has gone. Tim, I enjoy watching your decluttering journey, but decluttering tools... well...! 🙃 If you download it, I will watch... LOL! Keep up the good work, and don't stop now as decluttering is addictive!

Just because you don't use it doesn't mean no one would use it! The iron skillet, for example, might be cherished by a cook who found it at a thrift store. I'm disappointed by your lack of consideration for the needs of others.

My son has given me the best gift, by hanging a 8×8 foot pegboard on the garage wall and helping organize it. He has helped hall stuff out the door too.. I have been doing a similar process. I only have one parent left and cleaning out her appartment after she is gone will be so easy because she has always purged her belongings every time she moved. I am determined that my children won't have to dig through a mountain of junk when I am gone. Thank you for taking the time to create this video. Your video has given me motivation to keep decluttering.
