For me once a blade is around or beyond 6" its ok to have a finger choil. Even with that, it depends on several things. Out of the 2 knives in this vid, I'd say no finger choil.
@Revan6002 ай бұрын
I like the finger choil because it's good for better control finer work. It also helps it so you can choke up on the blade more
@dylanburke90972 ай бұрын
It has its ups and downs but I will tell you a choiled blade is always lightyears easier to sharpen.
@WungusBill-lf4iu2 ай бұрын
I like it just because it gives a break in the edge a little ways away from the handle, which makes sharpening easier.

I’m good with them on fixed blades, pocket knives usually don’t have the blade length to sacrifice for a choil. A perfect example to me is the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 (and the Mili 2 honestly). Very little sharpened edge for way more than necessary handle length. IMO

Honestly I think finger choil on fine edged blades ffgs and the like and maybe no choil on more aggressive/durable grinds/edges I think actually that both of the knives here are exactly perfect in their combination of features and am now curious as to the steels

Speaking from a bushcraft perspective, I was taught the first inch of the knife closest to the handle Is the most often used. That first inch of blade is the best place for leveraged to cut. But a larger knife. The choil allows better manipulation, Although for me choils are a no. Because I just know if I'm using the chill. That's the day i'm gonna get into a knife fight and lose my finger. I have to stay behind my knife guard. 😊

I just want Ontario's new owners to start producing the RAT-5 again (and not trying to sell it at 130$) 😢. In general, no finger choil for certain grips/leverages + ergos (meaning you can choke up on the blade while still having an actual handle vs a choke up with your finger fairly close to the edge/harsh angles). That being said, for an edc or a smaller knife (where youre not doing chopping/batoning/hard use tasks) FCs are great.

The main reasons the choils are nice is for fine control and ease of sharpening.
@gialuongpham78702 ай бұрын
I don't like finger choils, they take the length useful of the blade. However, I think with a big knife thick blade (saber or full flat grind) a sharpening choil combined with a gradual transition of thickness will help reduce the potential crack from forming due to stress amplification. At this intersection the stress is very high when there is a strong impact on the spine of the blade (where this intersection will be compressed and it will easily destabilize locally because it has too little material) a curve knotch like a small finger choil will help to reduce the amplified stress.
@peterbiltknifeguy2 ай бұрын
How about a large sharpening choil? Can do the same thing. I just think it’s unnecessary on a HUGE knife to believe you’ll be whittling toothpicks lol
@gialuongpham78702 ай бұрын
@@peterbiltknifeguy I agree, as in these 2 knives, I think that ESEE's choil design will reduce the risk of knife breakage more than the REIFF knife (when we compare the choil design) because it does not have a point of compressive stress amplification. On the contrary, jimping with small radius of curvature is also a fatal weak point of the blade when subjected to tensile stress.
