10 years on! 10 years of coming back for pre-Christmas fun with Just Cause 2. It's amazing to see how the world has changed in a decade; from Gabe's optimism about Disney Star Wars to the generally hopeful outlook on world politics. Even though all that went so wrong, this video still acts almost like a time machine back to a happier era, which is part of what makes it so precious. Happy Christmas, Yhatz and Gabe.

I think it's funny that Yahtzee is reading into the motivations of Call of Duty consumers deeply enough to assume they have any basic grasp of world politics or any interest in it to begin with. It's soldier worship, not national pride. Having grown up in the generation that played COD 4 and Modern Warfare 2 when we we're little junior high shits, I can safely say that national prejudice has nothing to do with impressionable young lads thinking the super secret squirrel man with the night vision goggles and sniper rifle is cool. Many of my friends we're obsessed with the British SAS for years afterwards, and hell, plenty of them we're obsessed with Russian military for the longest time even though I grew up in one of the most conservative states in the country. It's not about patriotism, it's about the glorification of violence and war. They like big tough soldier guys shooting fancy guns no matter the nationality, just as long as it appeals to their action movie standards.

The Hiphopopotamus i hate it when simple to understand things somehow become this evil thing just because they people trying to criticize it want the thing to have a deeper meaning no. its literally just dudes shooting other dudes. just like any other multiplayer focused game, the singleplayer campaign is nothing more than an extended tutorial mode. the real part of the game where everyone goes for is the multiplayer.
@WilfNelson19 жыл бұрын
+The Hiphopopotamus Your point is pretty decent, I was a teenager when COD 4 came out but never really got hugely into it when there were games like Oblivion and Soul Reaver. Yahtzee's point still stands however if you consider changing the nationality. Would a game about a russian special forces squad invading another country sell just as well? It doesn't have to be playing as Russia invading America just Russia invading another country they claim are threatening them. I don't think it would sell even a tenth of the copies of COD4. There is a point of seeing one's own nation and going along which was why the game was a never a sell for me. If i want violence I can go quite a few places, if I want shooting mechanics I've been fine since Black on the PS2 when it was perfected. COD games have the unique selling points of Multiplayer and shooting another country's inhabitants as part of your own military if you fit the target demographic. If you go to COD you want the national military experience or you would go to something else with violence that has another unique selling point i.e. people who play Spec Op the Line go for shooting mechanics and genre deconstruction or Halo because sci fi shooting. Sure these games don't all come out at the same time but a game always has to have some reason why it won in the competition for attention. I agree with you on a lot but don't think Yahtzee was wrong
@Banzay279 жыл бұрын
+Wilf Nelson -- See, you yourself are passing unfounded judgement by presuming (or poorly recalling?) that Modern Warfare was about the US and/or UK invading a country they claimed were threatening them. The US launch an operation in a middle eastern country where a known terrorist faction has staged a successful military coup d'etat and executes the president along with many civilians, a group whom they know will use this establishment as a base for launching more terrorist attacks. That this is a fictional country should suffice to appease anyone's sodding Political Correctness, unless they are specifically aiming to create a non-issue. Russia is involved, but again, the enemy the player fights is a rogue ultra-nationalist faction who is attempting to take power, while also having been involved in terrorist attacks against the West. Similarly to BF4, the Russian gov is assisted by the USA and UK in countering that faction. Mainly by the UK, at that. And, by the way, the USA doesn't have a glorious victory in the Middle East which shames the fictional country by showing they can't sort their shit, instead they get a nasty surprise that royally fucks them up the bum. Now, if you're gonna tell me these villains are prejudice against those cultures, you can sod off, because you're living in a dream world if you think they're entirely uncharacteristic of them. How many terrorist attacks do you know of that weren't perpetrated by muslims? And do you happen to know Putin? Russia's foreign policy since he usurped power? The war in Ukraine? Besides, similar plots based on rogue and/or corrupt elements in the USA or elsewhere in the West are also common. It's the same old fucking corridor mentality that all criticism of the whites or the West is valid, but if it's even just perceived criticism of another culture or race, it's automatically suspect. People with this mindset are just as narrow-minded as actually prejudiced conservatives. As for what demographic it appeals to, well, of course it's gotta appeal to something specific, at some level. Obviously a game where you play as an American soldier is going to generally appeal the most to American gamers with an appreciation of the military -- that said, you play most of the game as a British SAS, only one mission as an American; same for MW2. It wouldn't have made sense if the player was playing through this plot as a militant Vietnamese transexual who identifies himself as a woman. The same way that girl TV shows will typically have female protagonists and Japanese anime will 95-99% feature Japanese main characters. Drop the white guilt mindset that all bias that native Westerners have in favour of their own culture has to be wrong to some degree. It's hypocritical, self-destructive and, quite frankly, pathetic. And I mean no undue offense in saying so.

My brother told me to watch this video and I'm guessing it was because of this moment. It was so lackluster. He didn't do anything but pull up. Very disappointed at the hype he built it up as. You know what I did? I was at the final boss of Just Cause 4 yesterday. I scaled the outside of the skyscraper and was outside on the balcony when I thought "I should resupply". So I called an air drop of this really awesome grenade launcher. ... ... Wait a minute.... I opened the supply drop menu and called in a tank. That's right! I air dropped a tank on the balcony of this building and just drove it into the final boss. I just drove this tank into an office on the top floor of a building and beat the final boss gauntlet rush in about a minute. That was awesome. Dodging a missile while not actually doing much to dodge it? Not so much.

After all, they were people just like you and me, and that's the scary thing about it. Also, it could easily make for a very poignant mood knowing that no matter what you do, your side will lose in the end.

A game that fully realizes this idea would most likely be decried as apologia, with Wehrmacht soldiers depicted as Just Following Orders and all. I would like a simple change in perspective, going away from the standard Central European theatre to show other battle zones of the war. All the films and games that concentrated on the classic thing lead to the world believing fascism is a purely German thing, never mind that Austria, fascist Italy and fascist Spain joined the Axis voluntarily. If Pan's Labyrinth could make solid villains out of Franco's henchmen, why not games?

Thanks for the video. It’s surprisingly interesting! I’ll check out Just Cause 2! My two-and-a-half comments about military and nationalism: 1. Yes, the USA has built a huge pile of military hardware, and actually uses only a minor part of it in combat. But, it serves as a serious deterrent. “Bad guys” just can’t attack and conquer the USA in conventional warfare. 1.5. I live in Ukraine. We learned the hard way that we need a strong army. 22 years ago we gave up nuclear weapons, and never really financed our military. Now Putin’s troops just walked in and annexed a part of our land! We don’t have the military strength to kick them out. 2. National pride can act like a defensive instinct. It helps people unite and do heroic stuff for the sake of their families and their nation. Кусуте еroubles in our country caused a spike in nationalism, and it served as a fuel for reform, anti-corruption, and rooting out oppressive bureaucracy. This makes me proud. But… it also serves as fuel for hate, fights, and other stupid things… It’s complicated.

I know this is a 4 year old comment but eh here's my two sense , I agree all countries unless they are like iceland with no borders and very little strategic value need some military as a deter-ant but I believe america is beyond the point of diminishing returns and its obsessively funding military at this point , and I believe it's better for the long term nation pride if they do more to improve the well being of citizens

@TXFDA9 жыл бұрын
Spike Rose Exactly. I mean, personally, I still think PS2, and early PS3 looks fine. There's even some later PS1 games that look fine. There's no need to blow your entire budget on high quality 1080p HD graphics, when your game sucks. It reminds me of arguments between PC and consoles, or between previous gen and next gen consoles. Everyone's always all "Oh but the graphics are SO much better! It's 1080 instead of 720! The textures are slightly larger!" Like..who cares? Is 1080 THAT much better than 720? No, no it's not. It's better, sure, but not by enough that I'm gonna buy a whole new game platform for. I mean honestly, I can't even tell the difference most of the time between 1080 and 720. They both look HD to me. The only graphical upgrade I'll tolerate hearing about, is 60fps over 30fps. Me and my brother used to be really into Battlefield 4. We played it on 360 quite a lot. Then he bought an Xbone and the game on that. We played it. He was acting like it was the best thing ever. I didn't notice a huge difference between the two versions really. The only thing I noticed was the FPS. Everything else graphically looked close enough that I didn't really care. I wasn't gonna buy an Xbone just for the very slight graphical upgrade when the game plays pretty much the same.

This however is a twist on sleeping aids because if I don't want to sleep or wake up during the video I also have the benefit of listening to interesting commentary and some slightly unrelated visuals to watch. I love this series because unlike the zeropunction reviews I can sleep for more than 3 minutes before the overly loud opening and ending song wakes me and my neighbors. I think lots of people sing better than they think, but Zero Punctuation is more a resume builder for rapping than singing. In my semi-educated opinion. ;-) I mean, have you seen him and Jim's slam poetry?

It's almost as though the game detected what you were trying to do, and made the AI extra ornery and misguided. "Oi! That guy drove his limousine on the road shoulder, VENDETTTTAAAAAAAAAAAA *tree*". My two takeaways from this LDO: 1) There's a song about going to Mower (sp?) Meadows, that, despite any efforts and expenditures on my part, I will never be able to unlearn. 2) Yahtzee's got a pretty nice singing voice. Bravo!

On the subject of some censored material being funnier than the uncensored material, in The Simpsons Movie there's a scene where Homer dares Bart to skateboard down to the Krusty Burger naked. There are then a bunch of shots of people being offended about it, including one where you can see his penis for a split second. In the TV version, it's covered by a censor bar that has the words "European Version Only" written on it.

One of the greatest uses of clever censorship is "Jizz in my pants" by The Lonely Island. The clean version has Andy Samberg making disturbing moans rather than say jizz

Modern Warfare 2 would've been a lot more interesting if Sherpherd had actually fucked you over for some semi-legitimate reason, not just "that's one less loose end, hurr durr, BANG". Then the last three missions should've had US soldiers instead of Shadow Company, who're seemingly just his pet evil brigade.

I fun fact about the game, based my calculations (i.e. counting how long it takes to go 1 km and doing the math), the fighter jet only flies at slightly more than 300 Km/hour. That's barely more than most modern jets' stall speed, i.e. the slowest they can go without falling like a brick, and slower than WWII era piston driven planes. On top of that, a jet like that should cruise at well over the speed of sound, i.e. 1255 km/hr, so that jet is going super slow.

25:48 You know, most Americans think the whole "pledge of allegiance every day of school at 8:05 sharp" is pretty stupid, too. No idea why we still do it; I just stand there yawning because it's too early.
@Contra731110 жыл бұрын
If you read catch-22 they explain that it's a pledge that you do for no reason so you are subconsciously loyal to whatever you are pledging/agreeing to. Psychological and all that. I think it came around during the early 40's. While WW2 was going on.
@chikitiki6710 жыл бұрын
"The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States is an expression of fealty to the federal flag and the republic of the United States of America." Basically saying, I will be loyal to the country and I will be a good citizen. The same kind of thing that's been going on since the beginning of organized civilization.
