I hear you! You can always use white gouache with your current watercolours to make them more opaque. It's a good (and cheap) way to find out if you like the medium. Just one tube can get you started.

I loved this Lindsay! I don't have a dedicated gouache palette yet--just blobs squeezed around the edges of my big watercolor palette while I've experimented--and I agree it doesn't require nearly as much gouache to get a richly pigmented mix in my experience. As fun as it is to watch fresh paint get squeezed out, my favorite segment was the mixing experiments from roughly 42:40-51:00--your addition of Cad Orange both to the green and when you added too much were helpful; orange is a tough color to tone down for shadows on fall leaves for example and I rarely think to add green; blue of course sends it straight to brown or gray, while a deep red can sometimes still look too vibrant. Inspiring to start playing with my gouache again!

Thank you so much for this demonstration of your thought process when filling a large palette, especially when having a lot of tubes and when mixing name brands. I wouldn’t have thought to start by placing the primary colors equidistant in the palette and adding hues to the left and right depending on whether it’s cool or warm, with neutrals in the corners. I see you left some spaces empty; if starting from zero, would you recommend deciding on an even number of hues for each primary color, and an equal number of cooler and warmer hues for each primary color before you start? I also appreciate the tips and explanations you provided while deciding which hues to place where, such as adding more or less paint depending on how it’s affected by drying in the palette or how much you use as it is, or how much for mixing, etc. I got a visual of a young Severus Snape writing tips that improved his potions in the margins of his textbook 😂. Seriously, we are fortunate to benefit from the knowledge and expertise you've gained from your experience. As always, thank you.
@thefrugalcrafterАй бұрын
Thank you, I recommend doing a warm and cool version of each primary color, burnt umber or burnt sienna, yellow ochre and titanium white at a minimum. You can add other colors as you see fit after that.

This was so much fun to watch, thank you. I always keep a piece of watercolor paper near me when I’m working because I hate wasting paint and I will wipe my brush clean on it before putting it into the rinse water. I will also do it when I need to clean a palette off, wetting what’s left and brushing it off on a piece of watercolor paper. You’re heading into abstract-land that way and it’s fun to see what comes out.

When I joined a painting group years ago, the instructor was an actual artist, he suggested that instead of using black which can be very harsh was to use Payne's Gray. This is what I have used since. What is your opinion Lindsay ?
@thefrugalcrafterАй бұрын
I don't use black too often and rarely panes grey. I usually mix my blacks from other colors I have used, like regular and green or blue and brown. I do like having a black in gouache in case I can't get a mixed black dark enough because the opacity and matte texture can make darks appear lighter. If I do use black, it's near the end, and I mix it in colors I've used and sprinkle it around a bit so it doesn't look like a black hole on my painting.

The system isn’t showing that Lindsey has replied yet so I came to add that she says this every time she provides a painting demonstration. Her wording is almost verbatim of your art teacher.

There's something about seeing a brand new palette set up! Scotland has mold issues with some paints...I bought some jars of Shimmerz watercolors and 2 went moldy after only 1 use. I did let them dry a couple days before capping and putting them away. None of my other watercolors have molded but I'm boiling and cooling water from now on for painting. Do you know how long boiled water can be stored for painting?
@thefrugalcrafterАй бұрын
I have no idea. I have a gallon of tap water I keep under my table for filling and I go months before I use it up because if I go upstairs to dump water I refill at the sink.never had a problem here.
@carried9130Ай бұрын
@@thefrugalcrafter thanks! I'll keep a good sized jug of boiled water and keep an eye on it. Yeah, mold gets insane over here: foods go quicker, washing machines can develop it, a spray bottle I had for my plants, my coffee machine's water reservoir, having 2 paints go moldy...I've never seen anything like it before.b

I am struggling with the same question! I have watched so many gouache videos and I believe that you just gotta try and few different brands and decided after painting a few pictures. I have purchased several so far, Holbein, ShinHan, Utrecht, W&N, Schminke Akademie too. I have reluctantly NOT purchased DaVinci gouache as I LOVE DaVinci Paints! Lindsay’s review has me waiting, yet she plunked it into this huge porcelain palette! I want transparency from my watercolors and flat opaque coverage from gouache! So far I have just one good painting experience with the Utrecht brand from Blick’s! I need to paint more of the options that I have purchased. I hope you share your choices too.
