You only need to use the Extend option on the Recovery Partition. It will automatically resize the partition you're taking space from. Just make sure you select the correct partition to grab space from, in the pull down menu (most likely C:).

Great video! I have already applied the commands to my pc as well. It's pretty straight forward once you know what to do however I will not recommend anyone who isn't comfortable modifying partitions to do this and just wait for them to fix it themselves. I hope Microsoft never repeats this mistake again by telling everyone to modify partitions. I hope they will update the Installation media for currently supported versions of Windows to enforce the change.

Clear and simple instructions, very easy to follow even with people like me who's English is not very good. ps. if after you do the 2nd fix instructed in the video and you still get the error, run the trouble shooting in the update. After the trouble shooting, try the update again and it will work. It happened to 2 of my pc after doing the 2nd fix and i just run the trouble shooting and it updated.

Ok Brian a good video and do you think this will eventually be an issue with Windows 11 which I run on all of my machines? Now I have checked my disk management and it shows two recovery partitions - one being 969MB and one that is 1.46GB and (I am not sure how this came about) and if being like this will be sufficient for any possible problems plus I am not sure of which of those two partitions would be of use in update problems for my laptop in the future should updates be errored?? Do you think that the MiniTool app could be used to make these two partitions into just one? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Followed your instruction using MiniTool....and it worked perfactly...expept with the operation where we hane to ''extend '' the partition once it is created .....i didn't have the ''window RE minitool '' option to right clic on....i had to right clic on the ''unallocated space '' in the lil square ,bottom right of the minitool window then choose in the menu to extend partion....mayby it has to do with the fact that my OS is win10 pro....anyway....thanks for this fix.....now i can update window no problem...

I've tried about a zillion ways to fix mine. I have 2 disks. The disk mine is on, when I try to shrink it by 250 I get a error saying it's too big. After more research, Microsoft is aware of the issue and will be releasing a patch to fix it very soon. So, instead of doing all this crap and possibly messing up your pc doing it. Just wait for the fix.

Diskpart program limit is 2TB MBR disk. The larger disk must be a GPT disk. Check that MBR and GPT disk type.

None of this is necessary. Disable the RE environment from an elevated command prompt. Reboot and reenable the RE environment. Reboot again and then download the update. This fixes it in many cases. Though for some, it may take a couple of tries.

Windows 10 Pro user. I did it the command line driven way and it worked on both Windows 10 machines at the house. My third machine apparently had enough space, even though all 3 PCs had roughly 512MB of space initially dedicated to the WinRE partition. But hey, at least it's working now. Thanks it worked, you have to click apply after extending the recovery partition and reboot your system in order for the update to install successfully. For some weird reason in my case I have two recovery partitions and I found the correct one which is being used but I'm not going to bother deleting the other recovery partition as I do not want to risk breaking the system.

This update failed on 3 different systems, tried the MS KB method with the diskpart on one, and was left with the inability to renable the reagentc. Had to recover the winre.wim image and reload that. The GUI disk partition without deleting/readding or any command line worked well on the rest of them, and was a lot easier (used acronis disk director since that was already licensed and installed, same thing really). this was actually quite helpful

In fact, just few weeks ago, my Surface Pro 3 started a boot loop with a message "Attempting to Repair" on startup. Granted I have less than 10GB free space left on the SSD but it worked fine so far. And if I boot from a Windows 10 USB drive, I am able to see all my files but none of the Windows 10 built-in options to "Restore" the PC (while keeping the data) seem to work. Watching your videos in this series makes me wonder if the issue with my SP3 might also be related to an update to the recovery partition as well as the fact that Microsoft may have downloaded an update in the background that filled up the SSD and it's unable to decompress the downloaded update files while applying the update to the recovery partition? Worked slick to fix the Microsoft Windows 10 break. My computer had 2 primary partitions, so the 1st way was too risky. The 2nd method was safer and it fixed the error.

Used the MiniTool Partition Wizard (free) and it worked fine. I was a bit confused because my "Type" is labeled "MBR" not "GPT" (probably because it is a RAID setup?) and there was an unlabeled partition of the right size in the same location as what was shown in the video. I increased it's size and apparently it was the correct one (really the only one it could be) as the update went through. THANKS!

It worked. Wasted about 3hrs trying other suggestions first. I had three recovery partitions, one at the start of the disk not in use, then two more at the end of the disk which I was able to delete and replace with a single large recovery partition. If I ever reinstall Windows, I'm going to manually partition it first, with a 1GB recovery partition at the end of the disk, and no 450MB partition at the start.

Do not mess with the partitions as it's a Microsoft issue. I made a new install of 10 & same error. It is not necessary to get update & they will have a fix for it soon, Just ignore it!

It worked! You will be using Disk Management and the Minitool Partition Editor if your Windows 10 partition is encrypted by Bitlocker, like my laptop's is 😉. Just wanted to let you guys know!

The free version of MiniTool Partition Wizard worked beautifully. I was unable to increase the size of my recovery partition with the diskpart method. I suppose it was the order of my partitions. Minitool worked like a charm after a reboot. Thank you.

Hi there...I have a question please...My recovery partition, there is no name on it and i did the second way so now i have 4GB of space on that partition. All was good on Minitool software...But it didnt worked out. Still the same update error. On my disk management the recovery partition is in the first place and not at the end like you. And there is no name, is blank. But it was the only partition that was 500 and something megabytes and also was wroten on the Minitool as a recover partition. What can i do? Thank you

This was a great video. Unfortunately, the MiniTool free version no longer works for resizing the recovery partition... or converting MBR to GPT for that matter. Fortunately, your instructions make it pretty easy to do with the tools within Windows 10.

Great Video Brian. I did something similar with Macrorit Partition Expert which runs under Win Repair Toolbox. The only difference between that tool and MiniTool Partition Wizard was that I could queue all the resize options into a list, which did it all at restart when committed. I'd forgotten the name of MiniTool Partition Wizard or I would have used that tool instead. Could you do a video on the Macrorit Partition Expert as there are many options that I am unsure what they do? I'll leave them alone until I am sure of their function.

Your entire series of videos on this Windows Update error have been very informative and well done. However, after resizing the recovery partition, my Windows backup failed with a STATUS_WAIT_1 error. To fix that, I had to delete the existing backups and WindowsImageBackup folder then reconfigure a new backup. Apparently, the Windows backup functionality is closely tied to the disk partition information.

My fastest. When we shrink primary partion with diskpart or disk management, no restart. Skip reagentc disable enable. Use Minitool to extend or resize WinRE partion.

I just wanted to say thank you for the helpful video! I am a very experienced user and know my way around disk manipulation so I wasn't the least bit concerned about performing this fix provided by MS. I was working on a machine with multiple disks and multiple partitions so I was glad to have a video reference of what I was doing. Your video is clear and should help almost anyone accomplish getting this error fixed. I will say that I believe the easier GUI version using necessarily ideal. You can accomplish the same thing using Disk Management in Windows and don't really need a third party software, although I can see how that might be an easier visual experience for, some, with the additional software.

On my system the Recovery Partition is the very 1st partition with the EFI Partition 2nd then my OS is the 3rd partition. When I did a clean install of Windows 10 it just defaults to that configuration. Has anyone else seem that difference in their partition layout?

Hey Brian, I have Windows 10 and the disk is MBR, when I ran the the “create partition primary id=27 and formatted it, (as per the Microsoft instruction page) it labelled the partition as a primary partition with an ID of 7! I therefore had to find out how to change the ID, which I did successfully as it’s a simple case of selecting the correct partition and typing in > set id=27. The partition is now correctly labelled as a recovery partition but it had me worried for a while!

Attention to the diskpart method. If the partition is recreated and not extended, the original files from Recovery/WindowsRE must be returned to it because they will disappear during formatting, and the RE system will be started in the C partition as a backup, not in the dedicated partition. Another problem will be that if a UNC path is not specified in reagentc at the /setreimage /path option, then the letter of the recovery partition when you remove it (so that you can hide the partition) will cause the complete recovery system to fail or return to the backup from C if still its present. And if the letter of the recovery partition comes back after startup, it must be removed from the registers from /mounteddevices in the dosdevices area.

Ok.. I have Windows 10 Pro.. Latest version.. and do you know of a 'smaller build'?? because I have a 1 Terra SSD drive I use for my main C drive.. and I am like almost out of space.. I've been using other programs to 'free up' space.. but often times I cannot even do a windows update because of 'lack of space..' which I believe with a Terra byte SSD I should have more than enough.. Thanks for the MS link. I waited for a week and a half for MS to fix this but I went ahesd and did the manual way. Does minitools fix thumb drives that went to write protect mode. Happens some times when I reformat them.

Thank you very much Brian. It's seems that the mini tool is much easier to use over what is suggested by MS. But personally we should not fix their error. I would rather wait for the patch. Maybe MS want us to break our computer in order to buy a newer one.

I had no issues with increasing my recovery partition to 1gb and re-enabling the windows recovery. But I do understand why others would be better with risking. Best of all Microsoft came out last week saying that they won't be fixing the patch.

I have 2(two) recovery partitions with 450 & 528 MB. Question 1: Why? Question 2: which one should I make larger? Identified the active one and deleted the unused one. Also folks, remember that many SSD control softwares (like Samsung Magician) advise and offer the option to OverProvision an SSD. There are benefits, but the primary cost is that OverProvisioning sets aside any some (usually user discretion) amount of your drive’s capacity (Magician recommends 10%). If you have any space on the disk not partitioned, you might not need to shrink the Primary partition.
