In the old days, there were a limited amount of telephone lines in many areas of the country, so people had to share them. One line might have had 4 different homes. When a call came in, a ring code, a combination of short & long rings, will let the home the caller is trying to reach, know which home should answer. Bored busybodies would sometimes listen in on other people's phone calls. My grandmother shared a party line w/ 3 other homes until 1985. She was out in the country, but it happened in cities too, due to rapid population growth.

Doris Day was a fabulous actress who was completely underrated because everything seemed so easy. When Rock Hudson was diagnosed with AIDS in the 80s, lots of people were still terrified of touching people who had HIV. He was outed because of it and DD was one of the only people who stood up for him.

Such a fun reaction to this classic. So glad you've now seen a Doris Day film. She is terrific. Definitely recommend the 2nd Doris/Rock film, "Lover Come Back," where they play rival ad agency executives. It takes some great jabs at Madison Avenue on top of the romantic comedy. And you MUST check out the Hitchcock film with Doris and James Stewart, "The Man Who Knew Too Much." A fun thriller with a great performance from Doris. Lastly, there's a very cute and funny homage to "Pillow Talk" and the other "bedroom comedies" of the 1960s called "Down With Love," starring Ewan McGregor, Renee Zellweger, Sarah Paulson and David Hyde-Pierce. It even has a cameo by Tony Randall, which is a nice touch. Well worth watching now that you've seen "Pillow Talk."

I saw this at a film festival in an old fashioned cinema and it was great to see it as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. The audience loved it. It was fun to see young people enjoying it. You must do the other two they made, Send Me No Flowers, and Lover Come Back. She also did a great film with James Garner called The Thrill Of It All. For a very different Doris Day film see two Alfred Hitchcock films she did The Man Who Knew Too Much and my fave Midnight Lace. Rock was a very good actor, and off screen even more so as a closeted homosexual almost until his death at 59 from AIDS IN 1985. Very sad.

Personally, I like everything that Doris Day ever did. Whenever In see her on screen, no matter what mood I may be in, her smile makes my day and lifts my spirits. I especially like her work in :" Love me or leave me" and her rendition of " Ten cents a dance". Her version of the song is better than the original. She was marvelous in that film. As for Rock Hudson? I happen to like his work in Douglas Sirk's films such as " Magnificent obsession" " Written on the wind" and " All that heaven allows". I believe you might like them as well. Douglas Sirk's films have a unique look to them and underneath the gloss, glamour, and technicolor, the films deal with potent subject matter. Some of the scenes in those films are really powerful and heartbreaking. I will not spoil it for you or your viewers. You will see what I mean when you view the films. The most influential romcom since "It Happened One Night" (which also influenced THIS one). A lot of gags that recur over the decades; you recognized a few, such as the "efficient" apartment, lol. Audiences of the time were enjoying the faux-sexiness of the movie, though the message is clear: "Be a little sexy, fine, but not too much." Day did the same thing with Grant in "That Touch of Mink". Hollywood trying to shore up the barricades that Monroe already knocked down, really.

There is also a Doris Day/Cary Grant movie in a similar mould to the Day/Hudson comedies. It’s also enjoyable and funny and their chemistry is as good as you might imagine. And another romance comedy with Clark Gable that was a hit with great chemistry that was the blueprint for the future Day/Hudson productions. Also, Day was a hit with the public from her first film appearance, the studio forbade her from taking acting classes as she was such a natural intuitive actress, equally adept at broad/subtle comedy and dramatic roles, she said “I just pretend the situation is real”.
