I noticed that, when you transplanted the tomato plants you started from seed, you planted the roots and soil only as deep as the cup, even if the tomato plants were “ spindly”. My dad was a master gardener ( there were 10 in my family). He taught me that you can ( for the taller plants) plant them much deeper because tomato plants will grow roots out from the main trunk, and more roots mean a better start for the tomatoes. He took off the bottom leaves of the taller plants, leaving about 5-6” or the primary part of the plant, above the soil. I too love the aroma tomatoes. They have more “ meat” to them. I have a marvelous salsa recipe if you need one. I love your program! ❤

Just a little tip which I pass on as it was passed on to me. When planting out anything have a watering can with water/liquid fertiliser in it. Add a splash to the hole before planting. Gives everything a really good start and encourages roots to grow down.

I can't believe Eric doesn't "accidently" squirt you when watering. When I was young we used a brand new Case front loader, which, more importantly, had a AM/FM radio. I would be plowing, seeding, cutting, raking, and bailing listening to Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith. . . Do you guys listen to music while doing chores? The cranes are incredible. The silly mating dance they do, throwing dirt clods. Thank you for the great video.

Tip: If you take your onions and put them in just enough water to cover the roots and pull them apart it makes it a lot easier to separate them.

Have you ever thought about having a flat or 2 of mesclun growing indoors through the winter so you have some fresh greens to eat? My great Aunt taught me a trick for the second year bearing berries. You take some latex paint and mark all the fruiting canes. Then next spring, you cut out all those marked canes, and mark all the other ones. The plant will fruit on those marked canes, while next years will be growing. There's only searching and tracing back canes on the first year. It's an awesome, easy system. Try it!

One more thing keep your ash from your wood burner. Especially for your potatoes planting. It acts as a nutrient for your spud planting. For anything in your garden. When you clean out your ash from your wood burner all winter, keep some large bins and store your ash for what you are doing now. Scatter on your garden once thawed. If you have access to black plastic you could put that down in winter after you put your snow on the beds. It will help heat up the soil and suppress those weeds.

How many chicks do you have now? Gardening vlogs are my favorites. You can plant peppers a lot closer together than other veggies. They hold each other up when they are heavy with fruit. They just need more water and nutrients.

Those cranes are amazing. Two things. Some of the gardeners in the South cover their just planted carrots with either very thin boards or cardboard to keep the carrot seeds moist until they see germinations. I live in Humboldt Co. CA. near the coast. My summer temps ave. 70 degress. I grow a rather large sized (1-1/2 in) cherry tomato called Sun Gold. I wonder if you could try one or two plants next year in your high tunnel. You won't be disappointed. They are amazingly sweet and add so much to green salads. I'm trying a new variety called Sun Sugar to see if it is an equally amazing tomato. God bless you guys.

Omg never heard cranes, yes we have them, but they just fly over, they remind me of peacocks loud & noisy. Reminds me of past years planting a huge garden ,now just a few planters. Don't know about Alaska, but I always mowed down my raspberries in the fall after they stopped bearing fruit, came back stronger with bigger berries. 3:14 those weeds actually make a pretty good soup. Best to pick while still young and cook it with some potatoes and onions in broth. Could add a grain like barley and some cream to finish. A bit like spinach but can't use raw as far I'm aware. My grandmother used to make it ages ago. Nostalgic 😊🥰

You guys are amazing! One thought about the corn. growing up I always planted corn in a single row but only got a few ears. Later I found out to plant them in multiple rows. Example 12 plants, try planting them in a square close together for they pollinate themselves, course toy knew that right. After I took the advice I started getting more ears.

A good way to separate those onion seedlings is to put the whole works into a bucket of water and swoosh it around. That results in very little root breakage when you do this.
