You're right that if Goku hadn't said anything, the tournament wouldn't be a predicament in the first place, because Zeno and the Grand Priest would have just eliminated the lower seven universes immediately. So they wouldn't have had to struggle at all, you're right. But they also wouldn't have had a fighting chance either.

Zeno was going to destroy the low mortal level universe, the T.O.P basically gave them a chance to survive. Also Goku just asked for a tournament Zeno simply used that as an opportunity. (DBS Episode 80)

toei removed my favorite anime and replaced it with my favorite childhood anime for a short period of time, works for me. would be nice to see ssj5 goku finally ......sadly no tails. fun facts, roshi's over 300 years old, there was one filler episode decades ago where young goku went back in time and met 18 year old roshi and there are also some non filler brief scenes of him young ....and bald. also goku realized he was the giant ape that killed his grandpa when vegeta first transformed into an ape in their first battle. (couldn't remember, had to google it)
