That’s what I miss from the digital/streaming age of music consumption….looking thru bins at a record and cd store to see what I can find. I’m starting to find cool retro stores like this that sell new and used music in all formats. Funny enough it was my kids’ starting to buy vinyl and having record players that prompted me to seek out stores in this area (Boston Metro West). Most of my old haunts have long since closed, but stores like this still exist and you can find them if you just keep looking. Thanks again for a cool episode.

That’s a cool way to be brought back to it all. And a great thing to now be able to share with your kids. I’m glad some good record stores still exist for you. They seem to be disappearing all to fast these days.

Another great music store experience video, Brendon! I can almost smell that musty/dusty 'old records' scent in the video. Think I like Book-Off better (really wish they were in MN), but this looks like one of those hole-in-the-wall shops where you're more apt to find a few hidden gems at a decent price. I'll have to check out Bang. THX for posting!

Yes BookOff is currently my favorite just because of its huge selection of CD’s. But the downside is that there is no ambience. It does not feel like a “record store”. This place Downtown Music Gallery has that old school record store feel.

The Books-A-Million nearby where I live in OH did have used cd's...but they recently did away with that for whatever reason. Sam Goody/Musicland had this two before it closed its doors for good. There are tons of used record shops here in OH. And these shops have a slew of used cd's. Some thrift shops have a really good selection of used cd's (especially Goodwill stores)...and they're practically a steal at 2 bucks each. The downside to that is you have to check inside and make sure it's the right disc that matches the cd case and cover. Ditto with vinyl records.

Great store. I’ve been shopping at DMG for over 20 years, either in person when visiting NYC or online via email. That is the third or fourth store location they’ve been at since I started visiting. They specialize in avant-garde, improvisational, experimental, and progressive rock music especially the Canterbury scene (Gong, Egg, National Health, etc.). I usually leave with 20+ CDs and a few records. Always a highlight when I visit NYC.

Gentle Giant were a brilliant band. My favourite album of theirs is Free Hand. Still very prog rock but approachable for someone new to their music. I found the later albums like Civilian and even more so Giant For A Day were attempts to appeal to a larger audience which polarised their long term fanbase. Power and the Glory however, is superb! Thanks for the tour of the shop and great to see some of NYC. Cheers

Interestingly my first Gentle Giant album was Giant For A Day. Which after repeated attempts of not being able to get into their earlier music, that album clicked with me. From there I have branched out to other albums. But it’s those more commercial ones that can pull fans in exposing the band to a wider audience.

When I was in NYC, we went to the Chinatown district (Toronto has one too) and we went for lunch at a restaurant called "The Big Wong," which I guess is well-known there. It's kind of like a Chinese food version of McDonalds, but they give you a lot and it's cheap! You pulled out quite a few records that I have there, Brendon, but "Power & The Glory" by Gentle Giant is one of my favourites, and you need to get the Steven Wilson remix. It's right up there with his mix of "Freehand" for me.

My first listen of Power & The Glory didn’t immediately connect with me. I’ll have to revisit it in the right mood. A couple people have mentioned Civilian is being reissued as a Steve Wilson remix in April/May.

@@BrendonSnyder Power and the Glory was my introduction to them, the first record by them that I bought, and that was when it first came out. After that one I got Octopus, because I liked the Roger Dean artwork, and that proved to be a good buy too. After that, I didn't get many more, but now I think I have a good chunk of their albums, and the Steven Wilson remixes are just awesome. I "get" their music a lot more now, than I did when I was younger. "Cogs In Cogs" and "Aspirations" are my two favourite tracks from Power & The Glory. And I forgot to mention, I enjoyed this latest video very much!
@MartyMurray
@MartyMurray 3 жыл бұрын
Gentle Giant will never be an "easy-listening" band. Their music is very complex and very different. However, I think Steven Wilson's remixes make the music more accessible, as now you can hear all of the instruments very clearly and appreciate what everyone is contributing. In a way, their music reminds me a bit of Tool, in that it is sort of like a machine running, with a lot of gears turning all at different speeds, and yet the end result is that it all works together to make a sonic whole, if that makes any sense?

Another great video, Brendon. I love going to used record shops. That Who tee kind of surprised me. I remember you saying in a previous video that you dug the Stones WAY more than you did the Beatles and the Who, so I sort of came to this somewhat blind conclusion that you weren't too big of a Who fan (you don't really talk too much about them in your videos.) But you own a Who tee, so once again you proved me wrong that you do in fact like the band (I assume quite a bit.) So how close are you to your next Q&A video? I just came up with an interesting (pertaining to places where to buy music) question but I want to save it for when you reach your next milestone on subs or anniversary.

Hey Brendon I got a curiosity question for ya...I've been wanting to get some Motley Crue CDs and I'm Missing SHOUT AT THE DEVIL and I keep looking everywhere and they're going up in price...what's going on? Do you know anything?

Yeah I hadn’t noticed that yet but I see it looks like most of their albums are out of print. My guess is they will be reissued in time for the summer Stadium Tour. They are probably just letting old backstock sell off. But then again, Motley Crue have sold the rights to their music so maybe this is related to that and the new owners will have to find a home and reissue the albums. I’d sit tight and wait for a reissue. It shouldn’t be long.
