Thank you for sharing! I am stuck at home in the USA with no market and this was a nice morning treat/escape over coffee on Christmas eve morning. I went to markets in Strasbourg, Colmar, and Paris last season and while enjoyable, I found them touristic and crowded. I think I would enjoy a smaller town market much more. I have been to France so many times and not yet tried nougat! Happy Holidays, Diane and Tom :) from Oregon.

I visited this market a few years ago, it didn't exist when I lived there in the 80s. I've noticed how the prices have really shot up!! A great place to get presents and a lovely city to visit.

That nougat looks a lot like my grandmother’s pecan divinity. She never made a big cake sized thing but dropped spoonfuls on waxed paper to set and we ate them like brownies. She could only make them when the humidity was just right and they were decadently sweet and light.

We fly to France tomorrow! My husband's hometown always has a cute Christmas Market. I usually pick up a little something for family, friends, and coworkers--they love getting a little piece of France and I like shopping local (well... the kind of local that's 6,000 miles away.)

My wife and I were in Paris just before Christmas two years ago (2022). After dinner the first night there (not our first time in Paris), we were wandering around and happened across the huge Marché de Noël at the Tuileries Garden. We were amazed. Tons of rides and attractions, and what looked like AMAZING food everywhere. Which, unfortunately, we couldn't eat because we'd just had dinner in a restaurant and were already stuffed (which was partly why we were walking around - to walk it off a bit). We were disappointed at the stuff being sold there, though, since almost everything was junk made in China. We went to some of the Christmas markets in Berlin shortly after Christmas and some of the gifts there were better, though the food definitely wasn't. (My wife is German and we were at her sister's in the south for Christmas itself and then in Berlin to visit other family after and for New Years) Seeing your video makes me long for those European Christmas Markets... et je suis Juif! Joyeux Noël, Bonne Fêtes, et Bonne Année! (à vous et à votre mari)

Hello Jeff, Parisian here 🙂 Don't have any regrets about the Christmas Market in the Tuileries, really. It is a nice place, but it is "zero" for the food. Overpriced. Average quality. Next time (if there is one), just go to a real "fromagerie" or "traiteur" (delicatessen) in places like Rue des Martyrs or Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, but don't waste your money at the Christmas Market. Bonnes fêtes de fin d'année !!!
@OuiInFrance18 күн бұрын
Merci Jeff! Yes, you have to watch what you're buying since not everything is handmade or even from France. The xmas markets are super touristy so they get away with that stuff (and high prices). But the eco-friendly market I showed is a much better choice for unique gifts and wares.

Wow, that is a big Marché de Noël! My husband and I moved to Pau in SW France (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) on 1 November, and we are enjoying the Marché de Noël here. It is much smaller than the one you showed in Nantes - which makes sense, since Nantes is more than four times the size of Pau. We have about 30 chalets in all, with about 15-20 in the largest Place in the historic city center, and the rest set up in two smaller Places a block or two away. Just this evening, we had dinner at a bistrot in the historic city center, adjacent to Place Clemenceau where the main Marché de Noël is set up, and the decor and lights of the Marché de Noël and adjacent pedestrian street were so beautiful!

It's the biggest one I've ever gone to.... which also means more people, higher prices, etc. There's a lot to be said for the small markets too. Happy Holidays!

My best advice for any Christmas market is to go early, and then maybe go again when it gets dark to see the lights, try to avoid weekend nights. The later it gets the more crowded they are and if you don't like having to push through crowds, it can be tough. I found that the food seemed more affordable than the US fair foods, and also better tasting and more healthy in general. Melted raclette on a baguette is delicious as well as on potatoes. It's also nice to be able to walk around with your drinks, unlike in the US where you would be stuck in a beer garden or bar part of a fair. One fast food chain in Europe that I liked was EXKi, which offered fresh and healthy choices, like fruit you could eat or have made into a smoothie. They were located at train stations and airports.

I was at the Christmas Market is Strasbourg 3 weeks ago. Amazing experience. However, I was disappointed by the number of massed produced (in China) items. We were able to buy several made in France items. Then we returned to Paris and went to Notre Dame Market (near the cathedral). Everything was handcrafted in France. It was small but very nice. I love the Christmas Markets

@OuiInFrance The vin chaud is $19. (Yes, I got it). I saw a post on some chocolate covered Dubai strawberries that are $27, that might be the most $$$. I got my niece a funky corn dog that was $17 (insane, but, well, it's my niece). Most of the food vendors have crazy prices. Chestnuts for $8 (I used to complain about the street vendors charging $5). Some are decent, like the empeñadas, 3 for $12, but mostly everything is crazy.

Wild boar, like any wild game, won’t always taste the same. The taste of meat is affected by the animal’s diet and wild animals diets vary from region to region and season to season. One wild boar might be fantastic while another is aweful.

Only one way to find out...
@jean-loupdesbordes483317 күн бұрын
Little mistake about "truffade and "aligot" they are made out "tomme fraîche de Cantal" or Auvergne and not "tomme de Savoie". It's prominent because those cheeses are the intermediary forme of "Cantal or Salers" cheeses that are later broken salted and compressed in big cylinders. Those tommes are white dry chesses with very mild taste but as soon as it get cooked with garlic and potatoes reveal all flavoures of the Massif Central .
@OuiInFrance17 күн бұрын
Hello, someone else commented about the same thing I explained that right before I recorded the clip, I spoke w/the woman who made it. It's tomme de Savoie for whatever reason in this particular dish. Maybe that's all she had, maybe she was doing a twist on the traditional, or some other reason. I find it interesting when people only comment to point out a perceived mistake. Happy holidays to you!
