That hiker on Mt. Washington called for info on conditions, was told not to hike, and did so anyways WITH a dog who had no choice in the matter. I think he should be charged. I think anyone who needs to be rescued because they were not prepared should be charged. Buy a NH hike safe card and arm yourself with the 10 essentials at a minimum.

He premeditated the whole thing and went into commando/GI Joe mode, then when he made it to the top went into his act. In fact, probably the reason he did it was to get attention from something like this particular channel, which was his goal, that’s why wouldn’t become enchanted with such a roue’.

Good on you for coming on and explaining why you made the comments you did and recognizing this was an area for improvement. More importantly your post generated useful discussion about important considerations when hiking in potentially difficult environmental conditions. You do receive a bill for being transported by an ambulance, and depending on where you live, you may need to pay when the fire department comes out. I don't think people think twice about calling in a true emergency. So, if areas decide to charge for SAR responses, that seems fair, especially when negligence leads to the situation. If anything, it would encourage people to think twice if an adventure is appropriate for them.

I live in NY, and I'm an Adirondack 46er, so I've hiked a few miles. I'm very grateful for the Rangers that do the job. With that said, it is their job to do. It's their civil duty to rescue. They get paid by the state. If a hiker damages something while out there. Yes, they should pay for damages. But a rescue no. Taylor your great. And, I can roll with the criticism of my sweetness (lol) also.. I think a lot of it (at least to me) is what a person's purpose actually is.. I've never seen one of your videos where you have a mean spirit. Anyway... I think you have done a great job with your channel! All love from this family down here in Texas... "P.S." I love the White Mountains.. I've only (so far) been there once back in 2014 right smack dab in the middle of the "Snowpocalypse" that year.. Taylor, you have no reason to apologize. By telling these stories you are helping others to avoid dangerous situations in the future. Hikers need to realize that you are responsible for yourself. Accidents can happen to anyone and that is completely understandable. However, if you ignore warnings, dress poorly, take unnecessary risks…etc., then you should have to pay for the rescue. If you try to please everyone your content will suffer.

I think your video about the Mt. Washington rescue was absolutely fine. It’s ok to call a jerk a jerk…he was being obstinate and uncooperative with people who had put themselves in danger to help him. He also checked conditions ahead of time and went out unprepared against recommendations…hypothermia may have been happening, it’s called natural consequences…resisting help is not how to get oneself out of that situation. My sympathy is still with those rescue/responders who had to go out and try to get that loser off of that mountain. There are always going to be haters and overly sensitive folks on the internet hiding behind their screens to criticize others. It still doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t tell the truth. ;) Not to mention you’re entitled to your opinion and while this is still a free country, I say share it! :D

SAR members, by and large, are true heroes. That said, there is a small segment of these people who can be aloof, judgmental, and unduly harsh. Perhaps that is true of most first responders. Not all rescues involve well prepared victims who encounter unfortunate acts of God. People make mistakes and some do stupid things. I don't think anyone should fault you for your comments.

You had great intentions. And honestly, being charged for the rescue should continue. It may deter some from calling but I think the NH hiking community helps because of the charging. We all try to help each other and provide advice to avoid SAR calls. There is also Maura who will pick up anyone who needs to bail if they are around Crawford or Pinkham notch. But the motivation for many of us, is the money element so we go in to the wilderness prepared.

Taylor, you are doing an awesome job with your new series. Like the others here that commented .. you are never going to please everyone. Do what your gut tells you. As an avid NH hiker I can tell you education and awareness is needed. After covid the amount of people who jumped into hiking in The White mountains was huge and most of them have no idea what they are doing. Your intentions are extremely appreciated. As far as being charged for a rescue... I think it depends on the situation. The hiker you were referring too (IMO) should be charged as he did not take the advice of experienced staff. His choice to hike put him in a serious bind and put others at risk. Totally irresponsible.
@williambranham6249Ай бұрын
Taylor your experience with your last story has been an initiation into the world of news reporting. Personally I liked your report but I do understand some of the criticisms. It is easy to make statements or judgements about people actions but reporters of news who don’t investigate or better yet interview all the players in a story will get something wrong. At this point expressing personal feelings based on what you know might is not necessarily bin your best interest. We all learn from our experiences. People need to know the good and bad of hiking in the Whites year round. I think it might be fun to go to Mt Washington and interview folks involved directly in the rescue and even better track down the kid who was rescued. I love Dunkin too! I love your channel and have followed you from the beginning.

Hi Taylor, it’s great to see another woman who hikes alone. I know there are valid reasons for people to hike with someone else (or a group), but that’s not always feasible & I love hiking too much to wait to find someone to go with. I’m not from NH, but I hike there White Mts regularly & it drives me crazy how many times I see people on the trails who aren’t dressed for the conditions, don’t have anything with them on long hikes (esp in the summer when they have little to no water with them) or (worse) are clearly drunk or they go off trail, having no idea where they are & get lost. I’m sure you see this too. If someone is being stupid & behaving in a way that is reckless then I think they should definitely be billed for the rescue. I don’t think it will stop people from calling for help if they are in a bad situation. I could be wrong, but in think most people will put theirs & other lives first & worry about a possible bill later. Anyway, loving this channel, looking forward to watching more of your videos. 😊

Being from New York state I will say the one thing that I wish we had, that New Hampshire does have, is you can buy for a nominal fee, an insurance card from the state that covers you for rescue if you're a hiker. I would absolutely buy one if they were available in New York state. I don't go to New Hampshire enough to warrant the cost. But if this guy was from New Hampshire, and he had the opportunity to get that card and did not, and also was told not to hike and did anyway, I would say he definitely should be responsible for the cost of the rescue.

These hiking reports as you originally stated were to be weekly on every Friday mornings, but they seem to be released randomly. Their good reports but a regular Friday morning report may be more helpful for the most of us who come up for the weekends. Good idea not to speculate on rescues with limited facts. If charging for rescues may be a reason some people may hesitate to call and if they know their decisions will be discussed and criticized that will be another reason why one may be hesitant to call for help. You had a similar incident when your Garmen accidently called for rescue and there was unbased speculation that you did push the help button. Thanks for listening to your followers.

I never commented on the first few videos because they seemed ok to me (not that my opinion matters), but my hesitation going into those videos was based on the amount of gatekeeping there is on local FB groups or Reddit. To be a little verbose, it is like how dare us normals even look at their mountains unless we do things there way! The moment those press releases come out, people jump online to see if it is ok to criticize and judge people who needed rescue. It is almost like a disappointment when it says at the end of the press relief "The hiker was prepared for the conditions" because they need to put the torches away. If you have not watched 109* below on youtube, I would recommend it. The attitude of the SAR personnel interviewed who had every right to be critical of people given their personal loss, yet it felt like their message was for people to go out and explore, and if you need us we will come for you.

Mountain forecast I enjoy for an hourly breakdown. I'd give it an hour or two buffer for changing weather. It's not very accurate for the presis imo for the wind. When I was younger, sometimes park rangers but, mostly, locals would always tell a cautionary story of something stupid that someone did at crags, cliff, caves, etc. Cautionary tales about the outback/ backcountry/ wilderness are normal for people to tell to visitors in their area. You should expect to hear such cautionary tales, particular if you are a younger aged adult or a teenager.
@RickINFJАй бұрын
Consequences are circumstantial for sure. I really believe that they would have disclosed hypothermia or any other contributing issues, and not charged him IF that were the case. He ignored advice, was totally unprepared, put himself and his dog in danger, trepassed, and was uncooperative. That's more than enough ammunition to justify the charges.

Do you have any advice on financial safety during a thru-hike? My bank says the fraud alert will go off if I use my credit card along the way, and they only allow 30 minutes to respond before locking up the card. Since I might be outside cell phone coverage and my spouse has a job where he might not know they called until break time, this seems unreliable, so I was planning to carry a certain amount of cash and a pre-paid credit card, assuming the bank won't be so vigilant when it's my money, not theirs. But I don't want to endanger myself by seeming to have a lot of money.

It had sounded like the NH Fish and Game had left out a lot on that "Snow cat" rescue on Washington... especially the part about people acting delirious from the cold... while I feel everyone who uses the NH trails should pay a fee for each day of hiking, at the Trailheads, no matter why a person needs a rescue should not be judged by the State... it's their job they sign on for. They have the Safe Hiker program card... sold by the Fish and Game.... it would be a great public service to post links and verbal reminders for needing the Safe Hiker card. The NEW Hampshire Legislature decided to charge for hikers rescues if the hiker is found negligent. People don't realize there is no State income tax in NH, or sales tax... so funds are limited.
@jobtoll9654Ай бұрын
Rescues should be free. This prevents delayed rescue calls. I do not pay if my house catches fire, if I am on a car crash or if I have a heart attack and call 911, or if my boat starts to sink and I call the coast guard.
@williambranham6249Ай бұрын
If you call the fire department and ask it you could put candles near window curtains and they said “hell no” and you did it anyway, and your house burned down should you pay the fire dept over and above you tax bill? All situations are different. There are situations when a fine is appropriate.
@billcahill8825Ай бұрын
If the inexperience of one’s actions result in a rescue, because they are not prepared then yes they should be charged… buying a hiker safety card will exempt a hiker from having to pay for such costs….remember the people who go out to rescue are volunteers….
@JRoss707Ай бұрын
My years of hiking in the sierra, I’ve seen hikers hitting the emergency button on their inreach for something as relatively insignificant as altitude sickness making them out of breath for a helicopter rescue. It is my understanding SARs is a free service throughout the high Sierra. There will come a determining point when the rescue goes from search and rescue to a mobile ambulance service if and when it determined that the person needs or requests medical attention. If it’s apparent no medical attention is needed, the helicopter will generally land at a common trailhead or public destination and the rescued person is free to go without charge. If hospitalization is required, they are either transferred to a medical helicopter or the rescue helicopter essentially becomes an ambulance, and full ambulance fees start in effect, which can run upwards of $60k. Each SARs rescue generally goes under the review of the county sheriff. If the sheriff determines that the rescue is illegitimate, he has the authority to bill the rescued party for the service, like if he finds there was nothing ever wrong with the person that they just wanted a free ride out of their hike. This rarely happens as it is really difficult to prove. A person can claim altitude, sickness, and theoretically altitude sickness can be life threatening, so most rangers in the area are extra cautious and will call SARs to be on the safe side.

Your purpose is to educate safety, is it not? Opinions regarding who is right or who is wrong are subjective. You could take the conditions of the rescue make it almost like a scenario. These are the weather conditions; this is the time you are leaving. How do you decide as to whether this is safe? Could you bring additional equipment to mitigate the risk? Should you call for additional information, etc.? Could you make a decision to turn back under certain conditions? Almost how you were talking about in this video, about how you were checking the weather conditions but expand it to include all details, equipment, food, what all else is involved. Like walk through the safe way to approach this situation. Just an idea... what came to my mind when I watched your video. Take care.

I think if an average person should have known better and someone needs to be rescued because of poor decisions, then they should pay. It should also be able to be appealed so that you can present your case and explain why you made the decisions you made. So yeah, sometimes the person that was rescued should have to pay. Most of the time no. For a person displaying the judgment of an average adult, then it should be free.
