Phones are very fragile and make me nervous. A dedicated GPS is designed to be quite durable and in my mind far more dependable.

A NYS ranger told me they always carry puffy pants to warm up hikers who are hypothermic. I am glad this hiker rescue turned out for the best.

If he wanted to see the sunrise on Lafayette, I do too, why hike the Ridge and not do Greenleaf or The Old Bridal Path? I would that those would be safer as your exposure is a lot less.

I carry a package of Jello mix. It's super sweet to add to hot water to treat hypothermia for myself or anyone I run across in need.

Gaia GPS is great to check if you're on trail. Its one failing (which I emailed them about to fix this summer) is they occasionally ask you to reconfirm your credentials to validate your license, which is fine. But once it happened when I was in the woods and had no cell phone signal. The pop up blocked the map and because I had no cell signal it could not confirm my credentials, blocking me from seeing the map screen (even with a restart of the software) until I got a cell signal and could log back in to prove I had a valid copy. If I had been deep in the wilderness and not on a trail that I knew, that could have made for a bad outcome.

I’m scratching my head over the “I did it for $900” comment. Assuming it took them 16 weeks, that works out to just over $56 a week for everything (I.e., food, equipment, etc.), which sounds way too low. That leads me to believe either the person purchased most of their food in advance, mailed it ahead, and then forgot to include these expenditures in his/her calculations, or they’re just trying to troll you.

Do you have any advice on financial safety during a thru-hike? My bank says the fraud alert will go off if I use my credit card along the way, and they only allow 30 minutes to respond before locking up the card. Since I might be outside cell phone coverage and my spouse has a job where he might not know they called until break time, this seems unreliable, so I was planning to carry a certain amount of cash and a pre-paid credit card, assuming the bank won't be so vigilant when it's my money, not theirs. But I don't want to endanger myself by seeming to have a lot of money.

You’re an inspiration, Taylor. There are many of us out here who missed their golden opportunity to ever hike the AT (for whatever reason), and now we can’t. 😢 So, we are living vicariously through you (and, BadBat, of course!). Woot! I love your format, too, of having you in frame, cuz as I watch & listen, I’m also able to casually wander into the landscape behind & around you and get the feel for the terrain & atmosphere. In other words, I feel like I’m hiking, too! As a former avid hiker, losing that part of my life has been especially traumatic, so your vlogs have been a gift… esp. the AT in 2023. I finally got to “ hike” the AT, even if it was virtually. And, all because of you! It was such an adventure and more than I ever dreamed of. Just a fascinating journey of self-discovery, appreciation for the beauty of nature, cultural appreciation, and camaraderie with fellow humans. Also, it was about survival and the absolutely critical part that your family & Trail Angels played in that regard. (Hi, Mom! Hi, Chet! Hi, Callie! Hi, Trail Angels!) “It takes a village!” So, I thank you for all you have given to us out here in the hinter-lands. I mean, I may have “only” hiked the AT virtually with you, but after it was over, I was exhausted!!! Not kidding!!! I was so invested emotionally & cognitively, that physically, I felt I had hiked all 2,000+ miles! (The Notch was virtually brutal for me because I’m a chub in real life and literally would not have fit through it. Whew! That was tough!) 😂😅🤣 Anyway… thanks for the “How to” vlog on vlogging. Very informative and interesting. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! 🎄🎁🟢🔴🎉🥾🥾🎒👶🍼 P.S. Hi, Baby Backpack!

Going to the top of Mt. Washington in the colder months is really pushing your luck. On a beautiful day in the summer, it could be 75 degrees in Jackson, and only 35 degrees on the summit! Respect all mountains and study the weather patterns. Sounds like he is mentally ill.

SAR members, by and large, are true heroes. That said, there is a small segment of these people who can be aloof, judgmental, and unduly harsh. Perhaps that is true of most first responders. Not all rescues involve well prepared victims who encounter unfortunate acts of God. People make mistakes and some do stupid things. I don't think anyone should fault you for your comments.

Hope your toe heals up really fast! I don't recall ever got the vibe that you were bashing anyone.. Maybe I missed a few videos.. Sometimes the best lessons for others may be pointing out flaws in human behavior... I can absolutely be critical sometimes in my feedback in videos here online and in person as well... And, I can roll with the criticism of my sweetness (lol) also.. I think a lot of it (at least to me) is what a person's purpose actually is.. I've never seen one of your videos where you have a mean spirit. Anyway... I think you have done a great job with your channel! All love from this family down here in Texas... "P.S." I love the White Mountains.. I've only (so far) been there once back in 2014 right smack dab in the middle of the "Snowpocalypse" that year.. Not a place you want to make a "B or C Game" in the dead of winter.. But, absolutely beautiful! Thanks, Taylor for your time, information and content!
