Nothing says 'rookie' more than leaving your fenders out to smash against your boat while underway.

Haulover inlet, it's simple, no big deal: 1) go out along the sides, not the middle. 2) Any inlet - when coming back in stay just behind the wave, do not go surfing in front of it. 55 years going out of Haulover and Government cut, from 13' Whaler to 67' sailboat and everything inbetween.

What happens in 5:38 can be really dangerous. The yacht is loosing partly flotation in the middle of the hull(due to the "hole" between the wave tips) therefore also stability, actually its possible to capsize a ship due to this. Stability calculation usually dont take this into considering but are calculated basis the entire hull is surrounded with water. This hull has also probably a pretty low GM as is. The problem here is that the Yacht traveled at a speed close to the speed of the wave, prolonging the bad situation. Can assure You guys the that one was much worse from the inside than it looked form the drone. That master will sure be a bit more careful in the future, that's for sure!

What do you need to? Be faster than the wave or slower?
@joeordinary209
@joeordinary209 Жыл бұрын
@@TheHellfighter1111 Good question. Usually increasing the angle relative to wave direction helps, but probably not possible in that spot.. it looks like they used pretty much speed( possible aware of the issue), but in this case not much help. General rule is to avoid sailing in such conditions, again that can be a though call. I would make sure that all bunker and FW tanks are full, increasing the stability, as also pay special attention to ensure personnel and stuff onboard are "prepared" for potential violent movement. Looking at the video , this was only kind of initial stages of Parametric Rolling, but luckily the condition lasted only for limited distance, a couple of more of those rolls things could have ended very bad.

If you buy a boat it’s worth learning about what it can or cannot do.Knowing the conditions ahead before you set out is important so that comes down to planning as does catching or missing the tide. You can have lots of money but at sea you have to show it respect and know what to do, that comes with experience and taking time to obtain knowledge. The sea can be a great environment but it can also be very unforgiving and dangerous too. Like a lot of things you get out what you put in.

Haul over really isn't that bad, it just takes mostly patience and a person good at reading waves who knows their vessel, mostly it's like captaining a sailboat or a tug, you don't have the excessive speed so you learn how to just make way pushing ahead and how to use what you have. Most just try to hammer through it so it gets entertaining.

Not sure but it seems these large yachts are just below the size where a captain's license is required. Clearly, they are not being skippered by professionals. One has his fenders still deployed and the other has his fenders laying on the deck instead of stowed and an unsecured deck locker. Armature hour.

Big Girl should require a certified captain, not enough power coming out of Haulover, a large wave stopped the forward motion, bumpers not stowed. Small craft coming in, almost broached but recovered, always use enough power and speed. Large vessel coming in not enough speed and then the roll, very steep roll about 20%. Several smaller boats with to small a motor for the vessel.

@@jeremyrowley1240 I think you mean the other way around. Going into the waves effectively shortens the wavelength as they pass by quicker. But running with them effectively lengthens them because you spend longer sitting between the peaks. And if your boat speed matches the wave speed exactly you stay where you are relative to it ie it becomes an endless wave!

Not necessarily one right answer for all situations. Often location specific. Generally speaking though you want the boat trimmed enough to keep bow up and then really about timing waves you want to kind of ride the wave and not fall off back or come over front too quickly that you bury the bow in the next. For this specifically Inlet while I have no experience there watching the couple of boats that knew what they were doing if possible hugging the jetty on that one side and making the turn once your past is best tactic to limit exposure to the rollers.
