I agree on no paper but for me I would get stuck at identifying the chords to be honest. Not all of them as I might figure out the C and D7 but would probably miss the Dm and go straight to G7. So having the chords on paper is definitely a big help

That's very similar to how I learned that song 50 yrs ago. I have Always sucked at sight reading, so with paper I have to translate it to english first, for me it was easier to memorize than to rely on notes on paper.
