why do you need a cup that size for carbon steel? all that gas and its still grey lol. Keep a sharp tungsten, make sure you're burning the base before adding the rod, move a bit faster, and taper off on the pedal as you finish your weld.

Thanks for the tips! Learning continues. I tried welding different materials and fixed an old bike frame - with poor success. That's why the big cup. Small cup didn't work with the pipes.

@@CafeExMachinaKokkola I gotcha! If you want some good practice get a piece of 1/2” plate and just stack beads. Really helps get the motion of adding the rod down. Happy welding and happy holidays!
