Same. My sister would line up several pieces and put it under the broiler. Remember when stoves had a broiler under the stove where we now have a pull out drawer to store lids or pans. Ya that thing made the bread nice and crispy on the outer rim and soft in the middle. Damn, now I want some cinnamon toast. Lol

Just realized I grew up poor. We had most of these but a little different. Toast your bread for the margarine and fried balogna sandwich especially if the bread is dry. On the cinnamon toast, mix the sugar and cinnamon together first, sprinkle on buttered bread then put on broil until the topping gets crispy. The can cheese goes hood on the crackers. I love rice with butter and sugar to this day. Thanks for the video. 😊

i add milk to my butter, rice, and sugar and then drink the milk after. its actually a struggle meal from the great depression that my grandmother used to make us when we were kids. i just had left over rice and made it the other day and had my daughter try it. she wasn't a fan. lmao

This is all literally how I survived growing up. These weren’t just snacks or deserts….they were meals for me as a kid. Probably why I now self diagnosed myself with an eating disorder. But they were still all tasty!

i also struggle with eating still to this day. my appetite is extremely sensitive and really only eat once a day. i try to do better as i want my daughter to have a better realtionship with food than i do. i also struggle with eating and being inconvenient. i wish all our food came in a capsule and if you actually wanted to eat your food you could but it wasnt necessary as you would already have everything in a capsule and if you took your capsule you would be full and never feel hungry.

I just realized I grew up poor. We also ate karo syrup and peanut butter or butter. Added cinnamon and milk to the rice and sugar and toasted the bread for cinnamon toast. 😂 also e didn’t cut up the bologna, just cut a slit in three sides and put butter on the bread. Also fried spam sandwiches.

I ate a few of those things but my favorite was the cinnamon sugar bread but what I did was mix the cinnamon and sugar. Buttered the bread. Sprinkled the cinnamon and sugar on the butter bread and then put it under the broiler. So good. I think I shall make some tomorrow. Thanks! lol

My Mom would cut a x in the middle of our fried bologna, I still love fried bologna sandwich. Grilled cheese with bologna is not too shabby either. My friend next door moved here from West Virginia they all loved to make what they called soppy. It was bread and butter dipped in Karo syrup. It was a sugar rush for real. We also like Mayo sandwich with salt and pepper lol I think the best tasting lunch memories is creamy peanut butter sandwich with a glass of cold grape Kool Aid loved those 2 flavors together Thank you for the memories. We had budget stretching dishes and goodies. My parents were always having to watch their money when the 4 of us kids were still at home.

I grew up in the 1970s and we ate some of the same though our "must have" brands were different. Oscar Meyer bologna, Hellmans mayo. White bread was either Wonder Bread or Sunbeam; "healthier" brown/wheat bread was Roman Meal or Pepperidge Farms. I loved fried bologna sandwiches. Sometimes if we were out of bacon or sausage, mom would fry that up to go with the eggs for breakfast. An older sib liked to put regular bologna on pb&j sandwiches. We sometimes ate left over rice for breakfast. We'd eat it like oatmeal (butter, brown sugar, cinnamon & milk). We didnt have a microwave when I was little, so we'd heat up crackers/tortilla chips with cheese in the toaster oven. I always liked sliced apples & cheese slices. And, of course, grilled cheese sandwiches. And sugar & cinnamon bread HAD to be toasted, we never ate it cold.

I did butter (not margarine) on the saltines also. We also did fried hot dog slices in scrambled eggs or just on top of cottage cheese. That good culture cottage cheese is the best tasting and clean ingredients. Try the Good Culture double cream cottage cheese if you see it. And you have to TOAST the bread for the cinnamon butter bread. Yum.

Do you do stand up? If not you should. My mom would buy 5 loaves of bread dough for $1 and bake up a couple at a time, she'd slice 2 thick pieces and put lots of real butter on them because you couldn't even buy margarine in WI in those days. It was illegal. You had to drive to Illinois and sneak it across the boarder. Anyway she'd put the bread chunks in a small clean brown paper bag with a couple big spoonfuls of sugar, shake it up, toss it out the window for me and that would be my lunch during the summer when I didn't want to come in the house. Yup we ate saltines and butter for special treat when we were watching TV at night. (Don't get any crumbs on the couch!)

I never much cared for bologna, but that's something I only ever said out loud once growing up. Let me tell ya-I learned right quick that here in Appalachia saying you don't like bologna is just about the quickest way there is to get branded a "stuck-up," or a "weirdo." I also don't really like cornbread, but that's even worse...

He would take day old French bread, or just regular ol ' Butternut bread butter it, poor table sugar all over that, put butter in a skillet, and just fry that up.... mmmmm so good. He would take Saltine crackers, put slices of cheese on lay in cast iron skillet put in oven till it melted😊. Me and my friends and I would eat it up. He would pop popcorn on the stove, in a pot, in Lard, yes Lard. Then he would take some good ol' sour gum molasses in cast iron skillet, in Lard, stir it up till bubbly, take it poor over hot popcorn, eat that with a spoon while warm! Mmmmm I could go on and on.
