If you do this, typically it's easier to get a properly mounted connector. Something with PCB pins instead of just relying on the circuit board thickness being right and using this inline connector.

These designs are valid and fairly common. It’s a good idea to include some a readme/notes in your fab outputs to halt build if your board is out of thickness spec. I agree it’s very easy to accidentally fab the wrong thickness

DFM is built into KiCAD. if you get that set right your boards should always be perfect and it can check your schematic is correctly wired. No more “ooops” missed that trace….

In sinular design I used to laserprint mirror layout on glossy paper, iron it ob blank copper plate bath in sodium presulfate cut it out and drill holes manually. Oh these puppy days.

Been a while since I tinkered with KiCad, but I am sure it can also do these tests. You just have to specify some rules like spacing between pads and vias.

Kicad has the Design Rules Checker which is also super useful, but the issue is that the DRC checks against the rules and settings you set for your board. If you’re a beginner it’s hard to know which settings should be configured to which values since it can be fab house specific and the default rules are a bit strange in places. NextPCB DFM has smarter defaults and more explanation of issues, it’ll say things like “most fabricators expect …” or “this may be an issue if this board is manufactured on older equipment” etc. So both are useful!

@@abetodayto be fair, all the big board houses have this. In face JLC have (twice) caught errors on my board that DLC missed or I did. That was KiCAD 7, 8 seems better. Also 8 has a much better simulator now that includes dual and quad op amps which helps a lot to make sure the circuit is “sane” (I.e. you haven’t reversed inverting and non-inverting

I just completed my esp32s3 drone, my first attempt at soldering perf board. I used cat6 wire and it turned into a hot mess but it worked. Npn motor controle, mpu6050, 3.7v step up 5v 2amp with charging and battery protection. It was a challenging experience. I need to design my own pcb to make this thing lightweight. I uploaded a yt short of motor control test.

I encourage you to learn ribbon cable. Its like a PCB except the wires are in a plastic and can be cut to different lengths. You can fold them at 90° or simply have each wire break off at different spots as it reaches the pins. For anything around 20 wires or so it should be nearly as neat. Used to be you could get tons if ut free feom old computers, but I'm sure you can order some. Happy hacking.

TBH I wish there was a full length video for this. I'd love to know what the microcontroller does and what it outputs. And the iterations of the board. Like pre review, the report, and post review. Can a microcontroller that small output video via VGA?

Since you know about micro controllers I would like to ask you a question to which I couldn't find an answer to. If I have a micro controller like the NRF52840-QIAA-R, how do I program it and put my code inside? I saw the sell it also soldered to a usb stick but do I have to unsolder it from there after programming it or can I connect it to my pc another way?

This is actually something the DFM tool caught for me. No ground plane and I had ungrounded copper fills that apparently can act as antenna and interfere with signals. I had no idea!

This board specifically has a few solder pads on the bottom which aren’t exposed through pins so the hole allows me to access those and connect them to the castellated holes on the inside of the cutout

You can get a board like this one shipped for about $20. My average order of an assembled PCB (e.g. with parts soldered on) is still less than $40 because of their deals for orders of less than 5 boards.

This is pedantry and seriously unhelpful. It's obvious he is referring to a package containing a microcontroller, and this kind of simplification is both necessary for dirty videos but also fine generally. Relax.

@@norbert.kiszka No it isn't, it's not even an oversimplification as the package is just a microcontroller and the most basic components to make it useful. There are cases where simplification can cause misunderstandings, but this is not that situation. It's not like calling a computer a CPU, which is what you are implying. You are arguing for specificity in a way that makes communication more difficult, not less. I suggest learning more about education if this is something you are interested in.

@@orbatos this is big misleading, especially for beginners. Imagine somebody searching in web for "Arduino microcontroller" and (s)he founds real microcontrollers, but not Arduino. Oversimplification or not, its still misleading.
