DENJIRO: Have you ever used this piece of paper before?
GIRL: What is that paper?
DENJIRO: Here’s how you use it.
GIRL: Is that soap?
DENJIRO: Yes, it’s portable paper soap. As you can see, I was able to remove the writing on my hand. Today, we’re going to look at the secrets of soap. Soap has a long history, and it is thought that soap was born around 3,000 B.C. So how do you make soap?
Today, we’re going to use vegetable oil and sodium hydroxide, an alkaline substance. First, I’m going to heat the vegetable oil to 40 degrees Celsius. I’m using a hot water bath. I’m going to melt 12 grams of sodium hydroxide in 35 ml of water. The water will heat up, so bring the temperature down to 40 degrees. Then, add into the oil and mix for 20 minutes.
I will now pour the mixture into a mold and let it sit at room temperature for a day. It will harden like this, so take it out of the mold. Place it in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight and dry for one month. This what it looks like after it has been dried. Our homemade soap is complete.
Now, let me wash my hands with the soap. It’s soap all right.
GIRL: How does soap clean dirt and grime, anyway?
DENJIRO: Actually, mixing oil and an alkali creates a surfactant.
NARRATOR: Water and oil usually don’t mix... but a surfactant is able to mix the two.
DENJIRO: Basically, sweat or oil/fat-based grime on your hand is able to mix with water thanks to the surfactant’s unique properties. As a result, you can wash away dirt and grime with water if you use soap.
