I haven't seen a completely vanilla Factorio run in ages. There are tons of quality of life improving mods. For instance, one huge improvement is the squeek-through mod, altering hitboxes of a bunch of objects like, for instance, trees and pipes, so you can just move past them.

I love most of your playthroughs, and they make me interested in the games that you play, but I always check out other playthroughs before I buy because of what you said at the start of this vid. Your vids are usually from a perspective where you DO know how to play already and don't represent the new player experience that I would face when I start to play, myself. So I'm glad to see you playing a game that you haven't yet mastered.

I enjoy playing factorio every now and again, and I don't know the optimal way to do everything, but I find it a lot more fun to do it my own way, and figure out my own way around any bottleneck in the game, rather than look for some optimal ration that makes the game seem a little bland after playing a few times
@Kartus687 жыл бұрын
Quill, you you the boilers to engines right 13-14 boilers to 10 engines. I hope to see more of this from you. I also like the opening of this series explaning things as you go about doing things, it will help out the new players that might be getting into Factorio.
@shivalwolf7 жыл бұрын
You might want to consider some of the helper and non game changing mods. Squeak Through is a must (allows you to walk though/around pipes and buildings that are side by side) Always show recipe products is very helpful Tree Collision - shrinks the hit box around trees so you can actually walk though them. One of the many mods that makes it brighter at night is good for recording/streaming Long Reach is good but it does change the game a little but makes things alot more convininet. Basicly check out the Non-Game_changing and Helper Mods section of the factorio mods site, They don't change the game much and just make for a more enjoyable game

I'm sure you know, but you were right about the ratio to begin with. One pump, fourteen boilers, and ten steam engines. Also, I believe the 0.5 speed of the electric mining drill means that it will mine half an ore per second.

Hey Quill, just wanted to say in response the "I'm just gonna play and it won't be optimal" thing, yes that is incredibly important. Much of the joy and replay value of this game stems from the feeling "wow, that was a complete mess, next time I will make it so much more beatiful." And of course many of us like to see you fail the same ways we did, and watch how you deal with it. Anyway, have fun!
@MortlachNL7 жыл бұрын
No need to be perfect. There are other youtubers for that, really. Just a few hopefully helpful tips: 1) Give yourself space. Whatever you are building, make sure there is at least twice as much space between area's than you think you need. This makes expanding later a lot easier. 2) You will need more green circuits. No matter how many green circuits you produce, you will always need more later. This ties back in with 1, namely, leave yourself room to expand.

You got the ratio of boilers to steam engines right. I never sweat how I build the factory, I think part of the fun in Factorio is tearing things apart when you have to add stuff or if you think you can just make it better - takes longer that way but you get to build more which is what the game is about!

I actually quite like the more "blind" LP experience. I find it more interesting to learn about a game when the streamer/youtuber is also learning. The reactions of the player always seem much more genuine during gameplay if he's new-ish to the game. Granted this probably works better in a twitch format because learning as you go requires quite a bit of time and people probably prefer shorter, more information rich videos when it comes to youtube.

I don't expect you to be freakishly perfect - but you did introduce me to a bunch of strategy games (getting into dwarf fort, paradox games, and rimworld because of you) that you're fairly good at. I don't mind the learning process though, sometimes it's fun to learn alongside you and have a less "min max" let's play for it.
@sicksock4354467 жыл бұрын
Dont stress too much Quill. I consider myself somewhat well versed in factorio and even I dont really bother playing "properly" for most of the early game. And once you reach later stages robots make redesigning your factory trivial so you can clear all your spaghetti and replace it with a more optimal setup.

Yeah my absolute favorite game. The early game is somewhat slow and limited, so if you are new to factorio and didn't find that too interesting please keep watching, it gets better and better and better with the scale of the factory and the research progress.

Record is under 2 hours. (There used to be a link here, but youtube is so nice as to shadowban my post unless I remove it, so you'll have to look it up on your own. The video ID is IL-kB3gdVIs). If biters ever become an annoyance, just build a flamethrower. It doesn't suck anymore, and it's in fact a little OP. A lot OP. Flametrowers and modular armor will get you through behemots.
@atmunn17 жыл бұрын
Nonononono, not modular armor. You want at least power armor Mk1, or preferably Mk2. Modular sucks.
@o0alessandro0o7 жыл бұрын
That's why I said flamethrowers are OP: modular armor WILL get you through behemots if you have a flamethrower. Think about that for a second. You will need improved shields and batteries, but it works.

Quill going to say, the MP is good enough where you can probably play with many of your subscribers at once. Look up the 'multiplayer' test videos where they had like 400+ people testing at once. I just wish more people would re-write their networking code to be as clean. The great thing about the game is even if originally the design/layout is not optimal, there's zero loss for changing it around for most things. I don't do things super optimal, but it gets it done. I also tend to make tons of pollution so in MP lots of aliens attack, gives it more purpose. Even with the AI cranked up.

Hey Quill, just use the coal arms for bringing coal into the boilers because then you need extra spaces for your electric arms which require a pole so they get power. Because you can plant another row of boilers with coal arms up to infinity. So in the end you will have 1 line of conveyor belts full with coal then the coal arms which bring the coal in to the boiler while taking ejecting the coal in them selfs if they need it and then there is the row full of boilers and then again a row full of coal arms and then again boilers and so on... English is not my 1st language so feel free to correct me. Especially on this complicated subject haha. Anyways I wish you good luck and have fun playing
@xGhost4000x7 жыл бұрын
I can't believe he ran his conveyor belts this way doesn't he know it'd be 6% more optimal if he went that way!
@TheSweetSpirit7 жыл бұрын
Very nice start - I always try to get to electricity fast too! I think you went really overboard for early power production, but you'll end up needing it not too far in the future regardless, not a big deal. I hope this content continues far into the future! =D On my most recent build my only coal sources were very far from any water source anyway, so I needed more iron for conveyor belts, so iron needs became more relevant for me early game.
