You could have used a soul orb for a boot stomp to avoid losing. Dont be afraid to use soul orbs. When you use it, the souls tally up with your total souls. You waste souls when you got a full soul orb that tries to vacuüm up souls.

Oh reaaaally. I assumed that using an orb spent those souls. So really I want to be using the orb every time I can! Haha!

Yes, also the amount of souls you get from defeating a enemy depends on the hit combo. Every time a enemy blocks or take damage from any source = 1hit combo. Thats why you get more souls if a enemy spend a long time being on fire for example.
