I am incredibly disappointed that Gavin's outside-the-box plan to visit the Nether for gold didn't pan out. ...And slightly disappointed that he didn't think to build a portal to someone else's cube and raid them for gold. That would be slightly mean and outside the spirit of the rules, but hilarious and (I think) within the letter.

@WILLIAM PRICE 2 years later. Hopefully you know what it is by now. A lot of players know what it is, it's the best way of obtaining resources with half the effort. Literally just mining as high as you can from a low level, just one block in front, turn whatever way, mine 3 blocks forward, turn again, and go the way you came. It's literally just making corridors. You basically miss nothing, whilst only doing half the effort of what Jack is doing.

I feel like given how many obstacles you'd have to maneuver around inside the cubes (lava, water, gravel, art admiration rooms, etc.), that would get really impractical really quickly. Not to mention that they have to find the iron and diamond to make their pickaxes before being able to mine in earnest.
