43:35 You can actually walk through the gap in the stone wall at the end of the platform. You can see the other side of the track that has fallen apart (which presumably used to take you to the great tree island), and if you look down at the water you can see a broken maglev.

The inside of the star fissure really reminds me of that place in Twin Peaks season 3. When agent cooper climbs those stairs in that palace in the endless ocean. And when he gets through the hatch, he is suddenly on a black cube with a machine on top, floating in space, surrounded by stars.

Being able to enter the Starry Expanse here is one of my favorite parts of this remake. Of course it made my jaw drop when I first saw it. I think introducing it before the end of the game makes the ending feel less out-of-nowhere and more like a full-circle development, especially for people who didn't play Myst. It also explains how Gehn manages to travel around the islands so quickly, like after he makes his Wizard of Oz appearance for you. (Unless I missed something, he can't have been using the books in the domes since they weren't powered at the time.) But what I like most is that it doesn't make the whole thing any less mysterious. In fact, I feel like it adds even more mystery. What is the floating orb? What is the rock globe? What did Gehn mean about the feeling of breathing in there? I love it.

I played this game for the first time on my own channel, because I wanted a legit reaction when I saw things for the first time. I also wanted my achievements to appear onscreen when I received them. Inside the domes was a classic example of something I was not expecting.

Having played so much the original riven a few decades ago, i litteraly had the same reaction. Speechless and it did blew my mind. That's the moment i knew I was going to experience the same awe as in 1997, the same level of "unknown". That's how you do a remake :) !

I think the cage in the temple projects Gehn's image from his control room with the similar looking cage (which is an image tramsmitter). Reminds me of the Wizard's setup in the Wizard of Oz. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtains. Opening the bridge, prevents the worshipper's from leaving the temple. Opening the door to the Maglev is the way that they get access to the temple from the other island. Every Sunday (or whatever), Gehn retreats to the control room, opens the bridge, opens the Maglev access, worshippers stream to the temple, Gehn projects his image (as the great and powerful Oz) to the adoring (fearful?) masses, etc.

You can get to the other side of the first maglevel sation and look out to the destroyed section of track. you should walk through the gap between the rock wall and the station pillar

I was in a voice chat with my girlfriend while playing the new Riven, and when I opened the Firemarble dome for the first time, and my reaction was pretty much the same as Sven's. I was speechless and had trouble describing what I was seeing and had to explain why this was such a big deal since my GF hadn't played the original. And then the game crashed because I'm on Linux and the Riven remake does not like Linux. :p

I've had very few issues running it on Linux (using Proton), which were mainly due to aging hardware. I'm running Linux Mint 21.3, don't remember which Proton version I had Steam use, but I'm assuming it was the default.

The start confirms you definitely has traditional protagonist jump-phobia [0:46]. Im suprosed there aren't more comments about "look up at your balls!" [36:42] 😆 I do love you are taking your time as always 💚💚 tracing the pipes and connecting the visual and spacial concepts - top notch 👌

When I played the remake, I did the domes just by guessing, which made each dome take a lot longer. I only discovered the hints when I was near to the end of the game, granted I did play the original so it wasn't completely blind guessing.

The frame rate conversion blending (motion blur like) artifact is still present. At the beginning, there's zero of it, and then it gradually increases towards being quite visible at the end (but the previous frame's weight is still lower than the current frame's). In this case, it would result from converting something like 59.9998 fps to 60 fps with frame blending. I think you might be able to avoid it by making sure your video is exactly 60.0000 fps before uploading, or perhaps the capture software you're using has an option to disable the frame blending. BTW, I played the original 5 CD-ROM version of Riven back in March 1998, which is what attracted me to your Let's Play of the remake. I still have my old save-games. I may have finished the game, judging from the save-game filenames, having played for 4 days. (I only remember bits and pieces of it, but am looking forward to seeing the remaining differences in the remake by watching your video series.)

If you recall that the linking was to a single location and the illusion of a different environment oriented to the point of linking it is a rotational effect of each spheres that have different views of a same linkage to the book of arcana or teladahn or an other age of the same general location as a character reference your own position is telaport type

If you look up at the tubes around the book in the gold dome, you can see the orbs that you transported through the expanse. :)

Interesting, so one can enter in to the star rift area. And the volume in side the star rift seems to bring everything closer together then it is in the 'normal' world. Except the orientations don't match up, so it's not that the star rift reduces the distances. A more logical interpretation instead may be that this part of the star rifts volume is intersecting with the domes in those 5 locations in an unknown hyper-dimensional setup. Curious that the star rift is structured like that and appears as the world starts falling apart though. This seems to imply it in some way is linked to the overall creation, and now that the 'normal' world on falling apart a bit something of what it's built on top of is being exposed? Or who knows exactly I guess... well Atrus probably. But I guess this in some way might be caused by or is one or several of the 'shortcuts' that were taken in creating Riven. Well total speculation though, so it probably won't matter. In the practical upshot it effectively serves as a hopefully quicker travel system I guess. Though looking at it another way, assuming that book in the big dome is a linking book and they did use it. Then the logical conclusion would be that there you can only retract bridges from the dome side, then the person that tried to isolate the dome as much as possible potentially came from the one place with a still extended bridge in the star rift. I'd first thought that they'd have crossed over the bridge and then raised it behind them. But considering what happened to that, it now seems more logical to assume that this is not the case. And if one was very paranoid, I guess one could speculate that maybe someone setup the bridge to fail in case anyone tried to get to the dome from that direction. It could just be some kind of damage instead though, certainly things going on that could damage structures, but it seemed a bit odd really. This leaves just one question in my mind, how did the person that ran away on the elevated track manage to close the temple door. Maybe there is some other area aside of the chair where one can control it? Or was there some exterior button or control that was missed perhaps?

Oh yeah one more thought came to me, is there a reason you didn't go back to the machinery you fed steam power to at the starting area? Well I guess you might have just forgotten about it. Not sure anything there would do anything useful, but one can wonder I guess.

40:25 The animals on either side of Gehn's crest are kind of reminiscent of Odin's ravens or Zeus's eagle. Maybe they, too, are symbols of power/authority? Also, I like how they added the derelict MagLev system to the Great Tree Island. On the other hand, though, if the bridges in the starry expanse were set to go to that island, who was the last person to go there, and did they somehow leave without using the domes?

The last one leaving Tree Trunk Island couldn't have retracted the bridge, as the starry expanse is the only way out, so it seems to make perfect sense to me that it was still extended. The only way it could be retracted is if the one who did that was still on the island, and we saw nobody. They could be hiding, of course.

@@eefaaf To leave the island, someone would have had to move the platform to face another island, so the fact that the platform faces the Great Tree Island means that someone went there and either didn't leave or left by boat. And while there is someone in the building on top of the tree trunk whom we haven't seen, but I doubt that person was the last one to use the dome system.

@@micahbush5397 Ah, that was the point. On my play through I pushed the button before I noticed where the middle part was pointing. There would indeed be no sense to have it point back to that island, even if someone could do it away from the central platform. We haven't seen a way to move it other than towards you, but it wouldn't be impossible that Gehn or one of his henchmen could.

So I wonder if the Starry Expanse is intra-age while the Star Fissure is inter-age. Which is why you don't see the Star Fissure based crack. Honestly the idea of using the Starry Expanse as a method of intra-age travel is really interesting. Imagine if Atrus found a way to utilize this. Cool potential stuff. The only issue is the whole destabilization of ages element that these cracks represent. So you would need a way to stabilize it - that said this is basically 'linking books' and 'linking tablets'.

Idk, once I unlocked the domes I used them exclusively to get around. Which means that I never had the "return to temple" moment that occurs in the original, so I'm curious if that even happens any more in the remake. I assume you'll show it later if so. Though I was playing in VR and there was some very nasty pop-in while loading the starry expanse -- once just after entering and the dome closing it actually very slowly and visibly drew in the background stars, then the bridges, then each half of the inner sphere that was supposed to hide all of that. Fortunately it wasn't the first time or it would have ruined the surprise a lot more.

12:11 I said the same thing when I got there. 😅😅 Reminds me of Uru, the time traveling world where you link to the construction area and you realize it's all a stage. The only thing, so far, what I'm disappointed with is the characters are animated. I liked the old real live video of the characters. Atrus looks nothing like Atrus... I've already visited all the worlds, and am looking forward to your theory on a puzzle because i have information, but have no idea how it is to be applied yet. 🤔👍🏼😀
