The history of uss sailfish (ss-192) is quite interesting in real life. It was originally built as the uss Squalus. It was launched on the 14 of September 1938. On May 23 1939 during a diving test the Squalus had a mechanical failure of the main induction valve and as a result of the faulty valve sank to 243 ft. 26 men died as the water flooded the aft torpedo room, both engine rooms, and the crew quarters. The crews quick thinking saved the rest of the compartments from flooding and 33 were saved by the first use of a diving bell built for this purpose. the Squalus was later pumped dry and rebuilt where it received its new name sailfish.

Just to add to the history side of things. The uss sailfish also sank the aircraft carrier Chuyo. Unfortunately, at the time there was no way to know that 21 of its sister ships crew the sculpin which had aided in the rescue of the sqaulas in 1939 were pow's on board . Only one of the 21 survived the 4 torpedoes. originally the uss Sculpin had been presumed lost after failure to report in. But, in reality the sub had been heavily damaged by depth charges and was abandoned of which 41 submariners had survived. The subs conning tower was hit buy a destroyer [Yamagumo] main cannon shell and the watch crew was killed along with the commanding officer and deck-gun crew. The captain fearful of being tortured and revealing the Tarawa invasion that was due to occur later that year, ordered the boat abandoned and he himself flooded and scuttled the boat. He was later awarded the medal of honor for his service during the war. 21 of the submariners were put on the chuyo and the rest on another aircraft carrier after Yamagumo picked them up.

I’ve also heard that after they renamed her the sailfish (because of the ill fate of the Squailis) that the sailors used to call her the “Squailfish”, gotta love that Submariner sense of humor!
