After the trainwreck that was 06, Sonic had one more chance to wow players with a new adventure. And Sonic Unleashed was the game we needed. Time to howl at the moon. In this part, we see the intro and play through Act 1 of Apotos.

Ah, Sonic Unleashed. The game that introduced me to Modern Sonic games back in 2008. The game that introduced me the 4Kids voice actors The game that brought me into the Sonic community. What made me who I am today. I wasn't too big on Sonic for many years. It was more of a hobby for me than a...devotion, I guess would be the right word. I was into Sonic 2 and Spinball from 1997 onwards. I got Sonic Mega Collection around 2003-2004 and was introduced to Sonic 1, S3&K, 3D Blast, and Mean Bean Machine. I got Gems Collection a few years later and was introduced to Sonic CD, Sonic The Fighters, and first discovered the Game Gear games. I largely ignored the game until after Brawl, the first game I closely followed before its release. and I saw Sonic was in it. My reaction: "oh my god that's Sonic! I didn't know he was still going with new games!" And I'll never forget playing through all of Subspace Emissary for 12 hours straight just so I can unlock Sonic. Technically that's how it started. But that's not what did it. That was also when I first started getting curious about bonus content so I played more Gems Collection and discovered that there was an entire world of modern Sonic I had been missing out on for 10+ years. And even then that was not the turning point. Needless to say, I found out through the internet via GameFAQs forums about Unleashed, followed it up to and after its release, and played it a ton. I still remember the commercials. Everyone loved that game initially. Not so much now. Nevertheless the Werehog was, and still is, okay to me. It could be much worse. The daytime stages were amazing though. I never followed music in Sonic much but I was young and didn't care about anything but playing a main game. Unleashed was the first Sonic game I played when my standards in video games evolved and I liked giving bonus points to music and I'd research games on the internet. What a game this was. It started a route that would take me from Sonic obscurity to Sonic community then to Sonic Paradox staff and onward. Honestly, I'd say it is because of Unleashed that I'm sitting here able to tell you guys this. Because, to me, this is how it all began for me as a dedicated Sonic fan.

Finally, a good Sonic game again! After '06 and The Dark Brotherhood, we definitely needed this game. A hidden gem in the proverbial "Dark Age" of the Sonic series. Love this game!

I feel the werehog is actually not bad at all. yes it's unnecessary, but it's really fun. it's nothing like a button masher. the platforming is great! and the music is soothing to the ears. and it's fun to beat up robots and gaia monsters. although i will say the battle them was repetitive. but the day time stages are by far the best in the game. it's the fastest sonic game in the series. and the characters are well written. Eggman is a joy! chip is innocent, and Sonic is as cool as the earth is blue! SEGA is trying something new guys so cut the werehog some slack! this is the single handed best sonic game out there to date! so yeah.....

The introduction to this game is my favorite of all time. Eggman is ready to conquer Earth. Sonic shows up, and the two have a fight, with the hero going full Super to end it. Eggman pulls a Wily, traps Sonic, and blows up the planet just so he can build his theme park. All while a new monster of the week is awakened, and Sonic becomes a new form that lasts only for this game at night. The intro feels like the ending of another game we haven't gotten, and I LOVE that. Just imagine being able to PLAY that bit, though. My God, I'd shit myself with happiness.

They should have thrown in Tails and Blaze for the daytime stages and throw in Silver for the nighttime stages, so not only will Silver redeem himself but fan favorites Tails and Blaze will get spotlight. Yep, but the PS1 was the better system. The Dreamcast had some real quirks that didn't make it completely competitive. It's like the Saturn, both gems but just didn't appeal to the masses. I still prefer the Genesis. It is indisputably a masterpiece. Other than the Mega CD drive attachment didn't have any but 1 or 2 good games and the 32X attachment was God awful.

Last game in the dark age of Sonic? Sonic and the Black Knight is still a thing. The more accurate description would be a gem within the dark age of Sonic that led to great games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations.

People who hate the Werehog are just still pissed off because it's another game with combat, and that reminds them of sonic 2006. Werehog stages were good. Not perfect, could use a few fixes (Combat music interrupting stage music, some glitches, etc), but they were enjoyable. No, I do NOT care if they are similar to God of War. No, I do NOT want to play day stages without a break for the entire game. I like my Sonic games with different things to do, different playstyles, different pacing. That's why people liked Sonic Adventure. I think most people enjoyed Sonic Unleashed, though. It's only a few biased reviewers like IGN that started giving it a bad name.

Furthermore, there's the Hub world, which some people also criticized. And that is also another thing that the game did WELL. I liked going through a lightning fast Day Stage, then going to the Hub and do some quests and relax, explore, search for the coin things, listen to the AMAZING music, talk to people, etc. And the people in these hubs, like the main characters of the game, are actually well designed and had interesting conversations, unlike the Sonic 06 clones. Sonic Unleashed is an example of how a sonic game should be done.

I like how Clement is covering both versions of Sonic Unleashed. It makes it a very unique structure for the LP. Chuggaa already did it with Mario 64/Mario 64 DS, so I don't see how this wouldn't work as well. :) Great job, Clement!

Personally, I don't mind the Werehog stages. The criticism that they're repetitive is pretty unfounded in my opinion cause, at their core, they're beat 'em up sections, though with a heavy emphasis on platforming, and beat 'em ups are inherently repetitive, so complaining that their repetitive is like complaining that a dwarf is short, he can't really do anything about it. The complaints that it should have been Knuckles instead of the Werehog is also pretty baseless. Sure, I would have love to control old Knux in a game where he can be a badass again, but just because it's Knuckles wouldn't have made the stages any shorter or made the level design any better. I will, however, agree that they drag on too much and that the opening riff for the battle music gets really obnoxious.

I know! I have the game for XBox 360 and the feeling is so much more intense. Probably because its a bigger screen but DAT 1080P QUALITY MAN. YOU NEEDZ IT.

Honestly, I can see why people dislike the werehog stages, but I personally like them. I mean, no they aren't perfect, but I still enjoy the beat 'em up style along with the experience system. It just makes me want to destroy every enemy I see, rather than just rushing past them for the reward factor, i suppose

The thing that makes Unleashed mediocre for me is its stupid decisions: Great new gameplay style - held down by tedious night stages Return of hub words - held down by unnecessary medal collecting Amazing story - held down by terrible final stage/boss

I agree, except I liked the final boss gameplay. To me, it was extremely challenging, fun, and probably one of the first times I've felt like I've accomplished something "big" in a videogame, since I'm quick to use walkthroughs lol By that I mean every part of the final boss except the part where you're controlling that giant temple statue thing...

ThePreciseClimber Opinions man.. 1 - Why did you even mention SA2? has nothing to do with how tedious I think the night stages are 2 - It's a mandatory time-waster , the game would have functioned fine w/o them 3 - The ending gives the gamer a final impression of the game. The final stage was horrible to me, therefor it reminded me of what I hated about the game.

Well everyone is entitled to their opinions. Sonic Unleashed may not be better than A2, but it definitely beats Colors by a mile. Personally I think Colors is waaaaay overrated. So Unleashed is the best by far.

I said it before, but the Dark Age of Sonic isn't over yet. While I appreciate the improvement and the effort and love put into Sonic Unleashed, it still isn't as good as it could've been. No, it isn't just because of Werehog (Granted it's very boring too). The Daytime levels aren't that good either. In fact, when I played this game I found myself wanting to play the Werehog levels more than Daytime stages. They're good for a quick thrill, but it's so automated and cheap that they aren't fun. That is simply unheard of. The game is still pretty decent and fun, though. Besides, there's still 2009 to run through. The awful Black Knight sequel that killed the Storybook series, and Winter Olympics. Yeah, not a good year for Sonic overall. The series is improving. We're seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, but the Dark Ages aren't over yet. But hey, Clement likes the game, so more power to him.
