Back in 1994, that was a pretty graphic execution scene, immediate blood spatter upon impact of the axe, head rolling into the water while blood pours from the neck and the head is eaten by a foul beast. Nowadays, we're desensitised to gore in games, but unless you played Mortal Kombat(which by todays standards is still tame), it was quite an impactful scene and pretty much tells you immediately that you just met the villain.

Holy shit, when I was about five or six years old in the mid-‘90s I went to some family friends house and a group of older kids were playing a computer game. I looked over their shoulders to see this exact beheading scene with the severed head rolling into the water and it disturbed the FUCK out of me. I’ve been wondering what that game was for years so I searched for “beheading” in r/TipofmyJoystick and I finally found out the name of that game and here it is, twenty plus years later. Insane.

Back in the day, my brother got his first PC for Xmas in 93, and I was also playing on it then, ofc. My favourite game literally was Ultima Underworld, but it was just the demo I had. Also wanted to have other Ultima games then, but I was always told it wouldn't be the right thing for me to play at that age. Maybe I've finally found the reason since Pagan just came out around that time I was wanting to get VII actually - and the full version of UW. And thusly, my first non-Underworld Ultima actually was IX... and I even liked it, not knowing all of the lore it betrayed :D

I played this when I was 14 - my first Ultima game - and I played it obsessively. I knew nothing of the Avatar, his quest, the Guardian, or what anything was actually about, so I just filled it in with my imagination, and I loved it (other than getting lost in the Catacombs for hours and spending hours trying to do the platforming for the wind magic bit). It ended up being one of those things from my childhood that's always stuck near and dear to my heart. Even with the bugs, frustrations, plot holes, and the complete nonsense of the ending.

this game has a pretty rich story all by itself! a bit more arcade, but still lots of style and good dialogue, that is more than I can say for Ultima IX where we wonder if that is the same avatar or Sulivan the Trickster the bumbling ass who forgot his sword, often looses his backpack and lets himself get horsetied by blackthorn (and forgetting his sword when he exits Despise)

If you click on your Bedroll when it is on the ground, you can roll it up, so it takes less space.

at first, i thought the voice acting was actually in the game and then i realized it was the guy playing the game doing the voices, when the npc said his name, the npc voice actors never say the player name because there is no way for them to know what you will name the PC. this guy should do professional voice over work

If I remember correctly, it is not that the Avatar can't swim. I think the reason he drowns is that this Lurker is all present in the Water and pulls you under the Water.

Yup. Even the smallest pond is fair game for the Lurker. Even casual walking near water is hazardous, I wouldn't like to be a fisherman in Pagan.

If I recall you can just attack the thin air in this game to level up. You could do a sped up video of hitting the thin air for about 10 mins to max out your character.

Kikoskia Of course it's more efficient! If you case your net out you pull it out anything could be in it. It would most likely be fish, or the tear of the sea; an essential end game quest item which we are not looking for. By walking in you can squat down and see the head with your own two eyes and retrieve it. This saves time by preventing you from catching the same fish over and over again.

The character blurriness comes from them being 3D rendered instead of pixelart like the backgrounds and everything in previous games. It also gives them that bad plastic look of early 3D like in Diablo 1 and 2.

Does anyone know where to get the manual to this game? Not the traveler's guide, but the thing that shows you how to do stuff. Aside from stomping those beach crabs, I don't know how to do combat. I don't think I'd ever have known about jumping (and the stomping) if Kiko hadn't demonstrated it.

emilysong2000 as far as I heard partly because Ultimate Online was showing to be greener pastures, so they wanted them to finish up the single player games so they could focus on making expansions and such for online.

I tried recently to play this using Munt, but it crashes to DOS, and renders the save unusable. I think this won't work with Munt installed, so I may have to remove it and try again (or try Pentagram). A couple of useful things: click on a monster to identify it, no matter how injured you are, you only need to rest for 1 hour to gain full health. There are some interesting things in the area between where you found the jewelry box, and the town entrance.

Lesson learned? EA is bad. Never, EVER accept their offer to buy your dev studio. If you're in position that you HAVE to sell it, if you sell it to EA, you're only stalling the inevitable and making it needlessly excruciatingly painful, not to mention the garbage your games will turn into.

because of these two things i couldnt play ultima pagan. 1st, arrow interface : moving and attack and item interaction interfaces are all the same, difficult to control any. 2nd, fonts are too hard to read.
