If 929000 babies were born every minute then 1.3 billion babies would be born every day. Since there’s roughly 3.9 billion women in the world, today would require every women to have a baby every 3 days

Thank you, I was looking for this comment. Likewise, if it was just 1, there would only be 1440 babies born a day, or 525600 a year. Even ignoring that the birth rate would decline rapidly as the population dropped, this would mean that in 100 years, the global population would plummet from the 7+ billion today, to just 52.5 million.

There are technically more countries if you get into the weeds of things like the UK being technically made up of 4 different countries, or states that don't have UN recognition like Palestine, or even microstates like Sealand that have zero recognition outside the one dude that claimed "I am a country now", but the generally accepted meaning of the term "country" is an independent state that is a member of the UN in its own right.

can i just say, the babies per minute answers were so insanely absurd, i thought i was losing my mind. if 100k babies were born every minute, that would mean 144 million babies would be born in a single day. absolutely mental. I did some math that I thought was gonna be bs but it got me pretty close. it checked out to 133 and i made my official guess 150 just bc i thought it would be higher. I did 7 billion divided but 100, bc yknow not many people living longer than 100 years, so thats roughly the time there would be for all these people to be born, then divided by 365 to get down to 1 day, then again by 24 to 1 hour, and then finally by 60 to get to 1 minute. and it makes sense it was more than that bc the average lifespan is definently less than 100 years
@toomuchfreetime2637
@toomuchfreetime2637 Жыл бұрын
I decided to do this same strategy but using the average life span of a person in 2010 (67.2 years) and the population in 2010 (6.97) and this number got me closer again, with 197.34 babies per minute. once again I am not surprised this number is below the correct answer as im pretty sure the world population was growing pretty fast around this time, which would require for the amount of births happening to be higher than previous years, otherwise I am pretty sure global population would stay steady

For the Babies question, I feel like that's a good place for fermi estimates. There's roughly half a million minutes in a year, 8 billion people. figuring the average 2.5 kid family size (knowing that that figure probably skews lower because I think it's American and it's higher in many developing nations, but also figuring that there are countries with lower birth rates too, such as famously Japan, and birth rates dropping globally, meaning year to year birth rates are probably lower than this estimation, and people who for whatever reason never have children), divided by a 70 year life expectancy (which because the population numbers would include people too old or young to have kids, we're also using the full life expectency) gets you to about 286 births, which is shockingly close to the real value, for all the assumptions being made.

I've got to assume the 20.6% smoking has to be cigarettes, I know chewing tobacco brings it down, but weed, vaping and cigars have got to push it over 40% at the least. UK is at 13.9% for cigarettes, and we've got all sorts of laws prohibiting where you can smoke, and how you can advertise cigarettes, but 6.6% of England use cannabis regularly, which obviously includes edibles and drops but has got to be mostly still smoking surely and is almost half again in itself. Obviously I don't know when these numbers were sourced, but the more recent numbers for the US are 14% smoke cigarettes, which seems like a reasonable drop down from 20%, but would surely be a huge raise if you counted all forms of smoking.

From moment Laurie said that 500-some of the around 200 countries had KFCs in them, I knew we were going to have some wildly inaccurate numbers in this game. (I'm surprised that the actual answer to that was as high as 150) I didn't remember if the factoid was approximately one baby every 5 seconds or 5 babies every second, but all the people putting over 1k babies a minute... like do you think every single person on earth is giving birth to as many babies as possible??? Do you think everyone who can be is pregnant at ALL TIMES??? A baby every 9 months from ages 11 to 55 nonstop?

No hate to any of the players at all, I love this channel, but it’s incredibly frustrating to watch people misunderstand the game mehcanincs. For example at 21:37 multiple people would rather bet on the interval 20-21 than the interval 22-40, despite similar odds. And even worse they could have the interval 0-19 for even better odds. A bet on the 20-21 interval is an objectively a terrible expected return. Edit: To be fair Jon realised this almost instantly after betting haha Double edit: Of course 20-21 ended up being the right answer after everything I just wrote hahahahaha I also think the visual design of the game should take some blame, since it can be confusing. I would suggest having the numbers offset to the left of each betting zone, so it’s more clear you are betting on an INTERVAL from this number up to (but not including) the next number, rather than just betting on the number ALONE. Aside from this the game design is very clever, it’s looks like a great game.

I love how when everyone says Blair it sounds like BLEH because of their accents. I can’t unhear it. Love the channel! Been following Adam for years now!

I would suggest looking at the number of countries in the world everyone. It is around 200, so that first segment was both hilarious and a bit painful.

Yeah 193 is not correct that is actually just the number of countries a part of the Untited Nations. I was screaming during this question

The moon question should have explicitly said moon's surface or the answer is 24. You don't stop being on Earth when you're inside so the people in the lander are on the moon.

I agree with that thinking. You can visit a national park by driving through it and staying in your car. So the same logic should apply here. And if you wanted to go the really pedantic way in the opposite direction, you could say zero, as the astronauts were in suits, so they didn't touch the moon directly.
