What I’m wondering is, if you’re getting into numbers as high as 1000 and you’re only doing last names starting with “A” and “B”, just how many plots are there in this cemetery?!? How many people have gone through there only to be completely forgotten about?! Please do tell us more of these stories. It’s heartbreaking to think how many people have been dehumanized like this just because they needed help.

There are 1684 marked graves at the Connecticut Valley Hospital Asylum graveyard, according to the Godfrey Memorial Library's online database. 1651 of them have an entry in the library's records, with associated names, and ages, but all dates of death from before February 8, 1900, are missing.

It's something that happens a lot to victims of domestic/sexual violence, even the part where she acts nice around a suspected attacker (probably cause she's afraid he or his friends could do more harm to her). I would love to see more of these. But maybe not A-Z all back to back. Gotta sprinkle in some other videos in-between. Maybe you could collab with a company that cleans headstones or something. And clean them up as you go. Heck, you could probably write a book with all these stories in it, and sell it at local stores and online. It would be a great way to preserve this knowledge and make a few extra bones.

Really hits when you show wider shots that this place had hundreds of graves and stones already waiting for these people and they likely already knew it would be where they ended up. Just rough. Thanks for sharing this.
@ET13666

I never even though about that. Were the people numbered before they died? Or were they numbered consecutively as they died? Either way, the hundreds of plots were probably laid out in advance (if only on paper). It had already been decided (probably before they died) that they would be erased from human memory.

In my hometown, Athens Ohio, there's the old Athens State Hospital, earlier it was called the Athens Lunatic Asylum. It's been closed for quite some time as well, and from some cursory research it looks like the old hospital in Connecticut and the Athens hospital have in common the Kirkbride architectural plan. But there's an extensive cemetery on the Athens Hospital grounds as well, full of numbered graves for patients and/or Civil War veterans. We've had some remembering projects but it's still such a shame the general dehumanization, to add insult to injury many of the stones are damaged or missing. All of this to say great video, keep it up!

It's important to value human life, else we end up with many dehumanized like this. There's also no help if your poor and lose a loved one. It's very expensive. I know some areas have paupers graves in cemeteries, even that can be thousands, usually churches or something help cover it, but not always as small churches barely get by as it is. So nice they did remembrance services, very cool!

Some of these stories genuinely sound like old people struggling with the beginnings of dementia. Its so sad to think that these people were confused, unable to remember stuff and then got locked away and forgotten about. Imagine waking up one day in a room where you don't recognize anything, you don't know how you got there and you're not allowed to go out of the room. You don't know how long you've been there and nobody will really tell you anything. And then when you die, you've been reduced entirely to just a number. Nobody knows who you are or even wants to remember you. That's so sad to think about.

Really appreciate this video, especially the lillian part. My grandmother's sister was put into an insane asylum in the Caribbean and died there, either buried unmarked or cremated. Every time I am at a family event, one of my grandmother's sisters breaks down into tears at the sight of me, because I look just like her. Whenever I asked what did she do to get put there, my grandma would just say it was because of "what she did with the boys.". Crazy how being a little freaky would be enough to be put in an insane asylum in the 1950s.

Another video, heck a whole series on these graves would be a worthwhile watch. Many of these people were likely victims in life, and all have become victims of a cruel system in death, and rembering them is the closest thing to kindness we can offer. There's just something so fascinating about a grave, a monument, being made for the purpose of forgetting. "Let us remember, these people must be forgotten."

This is a great video, but as a Middletown townie I’ve got one bone to pick: CVH didn’t publish the death registers. A UCC minister named John Hall undertook a very long project to get the registry out of the state. He ran an annual memorial service where he read 100 names each May from 1999 until he retired. If you’re around Connecticut, he’s a great guy to talk to.

I found a distant relative is buried at Eastern State Hospital in Virginia. He had been "...acting out of sorts..." ,so the local court had him committed to Eastern State as "insane". He died unexpectedly a few hours after arriving there. An autopsy revealed that he actually had an undiagnosed infection. All of his brothers and sisters had passed away prior to his death so no relatives were readily available to take charge of his body so he's buried there in a unmarked grave.

Just found your channel- new subscriber! My gg grandfather spent the last 4 years of his life in the SD State Hospital for the Insane at Yankton, SD. My mother told me a local bank failed in 1932 and he got delusional and went after the banker with a gun demanding the money that he lost. My mom, who was 3 when this happened, told me that the banker said something to the effect he never had to worry about money again, he would be provided with a fine brick house and all his food and necessities provided... then had him committed. I was working on genealogy a few months ago and ran into this story again and wondered which banker, and how did this go down. I contacted the hospital and was able to sign an affidavit releasing his records to me. WELL, it turned out his family petitioned the court for his committal! He was getting more and more delusional- at age 80, God and devils talked to him, his wife was in the "old country", when she actually died 5 years before. He would run away from home at any opportunity so family had to watch him every waking hour. Which likely was a safety problem lest he be injured or worse. The records show he was exactly like the family stated, and more. They also state he was mostly "euphoric," and "amorous" toward the female staff! Well, he did have electricity and indoor plumbing, which his grandchildren would not get until 1949 when rural electrification finally was completed after WW 2 delayed the project. And likely better food than to be had on a hardscrabble depression-era farm. It would seem the story was concocted so the younger generation- Mom- would not blame them for this action and perhaps to allay any guilt felt. His remains were shipped to Iowa City to be interred beside his wife and his name and dates added to her headstone as they could not afford one for just him. I only wish Mom had lived long enough to hear "the rest of the story"!

Hi! I came from JacksFilms video, and I absolutely love this video. There's a sweetness to this, and a sorrow. I appreciate being able to hear their stories, and commend you for doing the research to voice them! Please make more!

At one time all these people were children running free on the earth. It is sad that many have a bad end because of circumstances beyond their control or bad choices etc. You have done a good thing for these lost souls who cry out for any kind of recognition. Thank you.

Just found your channel and a lot more than having a good story to tell goes into making something people want to watch, You're putting the pieces together well IMO.

Just found you (thanks YT algorithm!) and loving the videos! One small critique: when people are buried they are "interred", not "interned". Since to be interned is to be imprisoned (particularly for political or military reasons), one might argue that they were interned *before* they died.

Please do continue this series, this is deeply interesting content even down to the silliest details about the individuals you found. It’s really kind to return their names to them, even just for a moment of appreciation for their humanity. Thank you for making this video, you have a great voice and presence in your content and I’m looking forward to binging more of your videos!

You’re doing a wonderful thing. Always respectful. The saddest thing in life is to be forgotten with nothing left behind other than a stone and number. Keep it up.

just stumbling across this video now. i'd love to see more videos talking about the people who died at the hospital. i always feel bad hearing about these types of hospitals because i am well aware of how terribly most of the patients were treated, but i feel a little better knowing that you're giving them back their identities, even if it's a tiny piece of history preserved on the internet. i think a lot of the time, whenever i see graves from so long ago, i don't even really think about them as people with lives because it's just a hunk of rock stuck in the ground but these types of videos remind me clearly that these people are just like me; with hopes, dreams, friends, families, aspirations, and i wonder sometimes how they'd react to this type of thing. i think that lillian would be happy that someone finally spoke her name after all this time.

Fascinating, tragic, and very respectful on your part. I love seeing unknown people throughout history get their names given back to them. I'd love to see a part 2 (and 3, and 4, and...)

Thank you for bringing this to light. The Terrell State Hospital in Terrell Texas has a cemetery for the patients who passed away at the hospital and had no family to claim them. They were buried in numbered plots on the hospital grounds. The volunteers have researched the records by hand because the records from the 1880s was all in handwritten log books. Every single patient has been located and the plot marked by name. It was a massive effort and took years to complete.

I would like to hear more about the people behind the numbers. It makes me sad that their identity was stripped away in such a manner. Most of the insane asylums were horrible places to be locked up in. There probably were many people who were put in the asylum by a family member, who just didn't want to deal with them, for whatever reason.

ANOTHER wonderfully presented story, brother! I love everything about the many ways you present stories. We're coming up on the holidays, which means it'll be 2 years since I watched for an hour as you followed a little trickle of water up to Rowe Spring. By all means, do more of these. I like the way you reveal the humans behind the numbers. EDIT: Changed "no more" to "do more". Very sorry
