I came to the Critter community right at the start of Campaign 2. I remember making a comment during one of their streams about going back and watching Campaign 1. You know what I got from them? Love, support, virtual hugs, people excited for me and jealous I got to experience it for the first time. I even made a friend and joined my first DnD game. It was the most wholesome and welcoming online community I've ever experienced. and the artwork! Dear god there are some talented Critters.

For context the "I would like to rage" line is how Travis(Grog) would ask the DM to enable his Barbarian "rage" ability so he'd only take half damage for the next rounds. It became a meme and you knew when Travis said the line that shit was about to go down. He also says it against Brimscythe in S1 if you remember.

THE THUMBNAIL SAYS IT ALL!! 🤩I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOUR REACTION TO THIS YAYYY. Grog's story has so much heart and it blindsides a lot of people. Even if his intelligence is low, his wisdom is pretty good and he's proven himself many times to help others before himself even if he's just being chaotic about it. Can't wait to see your reaction to the actual campaign moments of the show, especially the moment of Scanlan recognizing Kaylee LMAO.

I was glad to see the spike wall make an appearance in Legend. You see - when the Matt brought out the battle map he seemed especially proud of these little spike walls he had hand crafted from toothpicks. And to be fair - they did look cool. The entire battlemap was nifty as are many that the show features when combat starts. But Matt was proud of his little spiky walls. They were destined to be co-stars.

I hope you do the same as for season 1 where you react to the table-to-screen moments, because this one especially with the locket is pretty much beat-for-beat what happened in the campaign! Edit: just checked the patreon, seems you already did that aha!

Echoing what others have already said, but you HAVE TO react to the table-to-screen moments from season 2 as well. "The Killbox" was the name of the episode in the game as well, and it is absolutely incredible. Never in my wildest dreams could I have hoped it would translate so well into animation, but I have since learned to not doubt these guys. They deliver.

Honestly it's so funny too because if you think about it this episodes events might have been the easiest to translate. Afterall, "The Killbox" is one of the longest streamed episodes in critical role but the fight itself is 95% of the episode and the fight translates into a few minutes of combat in this episode. In that regard showing what this medium does faster/better than the tabletop.

Something I thought I would note: You mentioned in the fight with Kevdak that the titanstone knuckles are OP and I would definitely say that that is true because I think they kind of understated the vestiges in the show compared to the original game. Because in the game they were introduced as weapons from Calamity which is an event thousands of years ago where the gods fought and essentially a golden era ended. These vestiges of "divergence" were quite literally made to fight against/alongside gods so that shows how much power they can eventually have.

I love the story of how that came to pass. Prior to the very first game session, Travis didn't do his homework to give his character a backstory or even a name(because he had never played before and didn't understand what Matt had asked them all to do). So at the first session, Travis had to instantly whip up a name and basic backstory. So he named his character Grog Strongjaw and immediately forgot the last name because everyone just said Grog. Fast forward several months, and Matt decided to run a session with Grog's father as an NPC. So before that session, Matt asked Travis what Grog's father's name was. Totally forgetting what Grog's last name was, Travis named the father Stonejaw and didn't think about it again. Until he had to introduce his father to the group and had to say the full name aloud for the first time: Stonejaw ... Strong.....jaw And that's when the laughter started.

Re: Kaylie My personal view is that Kaylie was a gift from Matt to Sam. You have to understand that Scanlan was completely created as a joke. Sam chose the race and class by asking Liam(Vax) the worst for each. He used an online fantasy name generator and it spit out 'Scanlan Shorthalt'. He even stole Scanlan's entire backstory from Eminem. Scanlan began as a textbook 1-dimension character. This was fine for the first few years when they only played every month or so, but it started to become a problem after six months of weekly streaming. All the other players were able to start fleshing out their characters, but I think Sam was having problems because there was nothing to dig into with Scanlan. It can be hard to take a perfect joke and make it serious. It's like trying to climb a smooth glass wall; there's nothing to grab onto. And I think this was starting to frustrate Sam. I think Kaylie was Matt giving Sam something to work with. At the time, Sam had two young children(one each, boy and girl - they're now roughly middle school/early high school age), and I think making Scanlan an instant father(and a bad one at that) put cracks into that glass wall, allowing Sam to start climbing. (Which we will probably see the results of this season - I suspect some of the last scenes of season 3 will be from 'A Bard's Lament'.)
@johnobrien7562
@johnobrien7562 Ай бұрын
this is really great analysis. Sam has talked about looking at the Whitestone arc and feeling a little trapped by the joke he'd made (although as the show has portrayed, being underestimated and feeling disrespected also plays into it,)

@michaelkemmet834
@michaelkemmet834 Ай бұрын
You probably already know this, but that moment was a reference to Taliesin being one of the key people to bring Hellsing to the American market back in the early 2000s. He was one of the main people that did the translation/regionalization of the original anime, and he was also a voice director and performer for both the original as well as Hellsing Ultimate.

So, just in case you were wondering, at this point Scanlan is 69 years old (because of course he is) and Kaylee is in her early 20s. Having watched the entire campaign and knowing who Kaylee was, from the moment they first got to the bedroom I was internally screaming "NOOOO" with every word that came out of Scanlan's mouth. They adapted this beautifully 🤣

Hey guys! Just wanted to say that I think you guys have one of the best reaction channels out there! I am a Critter myself and have watched every episode in the campaigns (well I fell a little behind in the latest season) Anyway, if no one has mentioned it yet a little bit of trivia...Laura Bailey (Vex) and Travis (Grog) are married in real life. Laura Bailey is also probably the most accomplished Voice over actor out of all of them. So is Matt Mercer and Marisha (Keyleth). Sam was in Les Miz on broadway when he was a kid and is best friends with Liam. Ashley Johnson has been in a lot of TV and Movie roles from Growing Pains and small part in the Avengers and she has been on stage as Annie! Anyway keep up the good work!

I watch this episode and know that like me, in the earlyish days of the internet, the CR crew and employees at Titmouse were watching and downloading fan-made AMV's and dreaming of how they'd totally edit one themselves. (If not actively doing so) And with regards to Pike 'showing herself'.... her lack of stealth ability was a THING in the game. It's a downside to wearing heavy armor as a class or character, sneaking becomes almost impossible.

Sam based his character after Eminem's history. So Marshal Mathers became Scanlan Shorthalt. In the campaign, he actually toured with Doctor Dranzel who was named after Dr. Dre. The funny thing was Sam didn't plan on Kayleigh. (Eminem's daughter's name is Haylee.) So his reaction in the campaign was the exact same shock when she revealed he was "daddy". I am not sure if Matt knew who Sam created his backstory after or if it was just fate.

Yeah, the Killbox fight is amazing both in the animation and in the campaign. It is more of a punch out drag-down slugfest in the campaign, with everyone gradually running out of both health and spells/abilities against the Herd, and Kevdak himself who took half damage from *everything* Vox Machina could throw at him*, plus he had a healer on his side as well. And then the climax happens almost exactly as in the animation. The aftermath is also coming up on a pivotal moment for Scanlan. He's been sleeping around for years with no thought for the consequences, and now one of the "consequences" have caught up to him. Scanlan probably has more kids than Kaylee, but she was the only one with both the motivation *and* the skills to go look for him until she found him. *DnD class mechanics: Kevdak was a Bear Totem barbarian, who takes half damage from everything except psychic damage (which none of Vox Machina has). A Berserker barbarian like Grog takes half damage from slashing, piercing and bludgeoning attacks, but full damage from magic spells and spell-like abilities (like a dragon's breath weapon or a wraith's life drain ability).
