In this episode of Let's Repair! we'll be checking out a faulty PSOne which goes between having no audio, a jumpy video signal, or nothing at all depending on how it feels. We also attempt a C-Sync modification to the console as well to see where it takes us! Does it end up working? Well.... Probably... Since ya know, I uploaded it and everything... OR DOES IT?!
This video has been made with Fair Use in mind and has been created as an educational piece of media.

Hey MrMario, just want to clarify some things that are incorrect in this video and, hopefully, help you understand why composite video isn't working anymore. So, let's start saying that it's not possible to "restore" C-Sync in the psone because none of the PS or psone revision output C-Sync, at least not natively, the sync is pulled from the composite video line that also serves to drive composite video, now, all scart equipment search for sync signal on the composite line and thats all that the mod does, it pulls raw C-Sync from point L507 on the motherboard, attenuates the signal via a 75ohm resistor, uses a 220mf cap as a filter for electro magnetic interferences and output the attenuated C-Sync to pin 7 on the multiout. Now, on the subject of why composite video isn't working, it's because there is no composite video going through pin 7 because the trace that carries composite video is cut, only C-Sync is present, thats also the reason why there is only sound and no video. The problem that this psone had from the beginning was that the cap at C551 was blown and the composite video connection to the multiout was cut. Thats a pretty common problem in psones because the caps at C551 and C550 are of low quality. That said, I have just two really important things to say: First, because we are talking about signals attenuation, I really sugest to stay close to the 75ohm resistence, badly attenuated sync is dangerous for scart equipment and can easly damage your TV or scaler! Second, because the point of C-Sync is to make the immage much more clear, sharp and noise free, wire length is crucial so the optimal way of doing this mod on a stock psone would be to lift the positive leg of C551, making sure to insulate the pad on the board and just bridge it with point L507 using the 75ohm resistor, this will automatically drive attenuated C-Sync to pin 7 of the multiout (Also, when I talk about pin 7 I'm refering to the same pin 6 you use in your video, I'm just counting the numbers using the annotation on the top layer of the board). I hope that this informations are helpfull for you and for anybody reading this long-ass comment!

Can I swap a working c551 cap from another psone ? The reason I'm asking is is because I tried and I'm not having much luck getting any video Here is a picture of of the caps the one on the left is the old "non working" cap one on the right was from a psone with working composite signal imgur.com/a/NEsx9hM

Very detailed description, but this did not work for me too as mentioned by some another guy. So the same question - is it possible to change parts like Cxxx? I have two machines for spare parts.

@@MrMario2011 to avoid cutting trace wouldn't be easier just to remove composite video cap(one of 3 next to multiout)?

You should expose more wire and wrap it around the leg of the resistor/capacitor then solder it. It will be a much stronger connection than putting the wire in the solder.

The trade-off with electrical components is power handling vs size. The more power they'll handle, like 25V or 1/2W, they'll be larger than their 10V and 1/4W equivalents.

Lol the "meu f"! I've never heard it called that before. The symbol that looks like a mu smashed together is actually the symbol for micro and the f is for farad. So you have a 220 micro farad capacitor. That being said I had a PS One about a month ago doing this exact same thing. I decided to remove the laser unit from it and put it in my SCPH-1001 unit that is able to perform the single swap trick for playing burns but had a somewhat weak laser mech. The PS One laser fits SCPH-1001 model exactly with just a tiny shave of the frame with a Dremel tool. I may try this someday just incase I want to slap it back into my PS One.

This mod is pretty good when using RGB Scart and video upscaler. However it disables the ability of the console to output composite video. When you cut pin 6 you actually cut the composite line and replaced it with pure C-Sync which cares only vertical and horizontal lines information and none of the color information. That is perfectly fine with RGB (separate lines for colors) but if you try using Composite cable again you will end up with a blank screen.

I bought a composite cable (red, white and yellow) (av) for my psone, i actualy had no white input so i used green. Psone DOES work but it shows vertical lines all over the place and it leaves a LOT of colours away. Anyone kniw why this is happening?

Hey I'm currently doing this and I'm not getting video, only audio. What is the scart converter you're using? I just bought a converter with no power that's scart-composite do you think I need one that requires its own power to convert the video?

Sounds like a capacitor issue on the video line. If you're comfortable doing some solder work, it's a pretty easy fix. The two larger silver capacitors near the AV multiout labeled C550 and C551 need to be replaced

Guess what, the link to mmmonkey no longer exists so since you don't have a close up on what you cut and where you connect the wire, the only thing i see is a dude moving his hands for 35 minutes. I know you are trying to help, but a dead link just rendered your video useless. One closeup photo would be enough.
