Note to Cass at Clutterbug I had a breakthrough epiphany because of your podcast. I’ve been following your KZbin channel, bought your books, listened to your podcast for a long long time. I’m good at cleaning and organizing, my problem has always been in the decluttering - it’s like pulling my own teeth with worn out pliers; painful and ineffective. I follow Dawn and Dana and am good at looking for trash, taking it there now, and duh-clutter, but I just run into some stupid block when it comes to getting rid of good, useful, or sentimental stuff. Nearly everything I own is in that last category! Then I was listening to your podcast #170 yesterday while I was driving and was epiphanized (yeah, I made up a word😉). You were talking about being responsible for everything you own, and how much of your energy and time do you want to devote to it, etc, and it hit me….EVERYTHING YOU OWN, OWNS YOU, TOO! I know, you professional experts probably think this is elementary knowledge that any dummy starting out would quickly grasp, but I’ve been a student of decluttering and organization since the early 80’s, and it just hit me yesterday the question I need to ask myself is: “Do I want to be owned by this item?” I have a feeling that my answer is going to be more NO than YES. As they say in Texas (nod to Dana) “I’m fixin’ to find out!” 😁 BTW, I’m a bee. Thanks for being a conduit of inspiration, Gail White Blackfoot, Idaho

I have chronic pain and mental illness and it's just expected that I'm "behind" on housework. But I've gotten my house to a point where we are never so far behind that my husband and I can't tidy the house in an afternoon. I love the idea of showing love for yourself by decluttering. We are worth so much more than our crap! I also got to a point where I was mad and fighting for myself by decluttering space. I'm so glad I did and grateful I found your channel!

Case, as far as the uniform question…. I have a hanging sweater cubby thing in my closet. When I do my laundry I put an entire outfit ( scrub pants, scrub top, undershirt, panties , bra and socks )in each cubby so I don’t have to think in the morning. I leave for work at 6 am everyday. I'm a tad late to the party. But I must say that I discovered your channel only a month ago at most, and you have helped me so, so much!! I am somewhere between a bee and a cricket, I'm very detail oriented, extremely organised by nature; but with very poor health and an abusive relationship, my house went to s*#%. I have way too much stuff, with the intention of "I'll sell that"...I never did! Now I've got 8 years plus of crap I don't need, and has no value now anyway! It's taking me some time, but I'm finally getting there. I've hired a friend to help me once a week, and I no longer hate myself -I really hated myself before, and joined with poor health, autism and CPTSD...its taken so long to get here. I've still a lot to do, but it's in motion, it's getting done, my house is starting to work for me, and I'm managing so much better than I have in years! Thank you so much Cas, I think I clicked with you from the very first video I watched, and the help I've had from these videos is immeasurable ❤

We have gotten rid of so much stuff recently because we’ve been slowly renovating parts of our house and fixing things that needed to be fixed for a long time. It’s forced me to go through EVERYTHING we own to make room for the renovations. We’re talking emptying whole closets and not putting anything back in! I think we may end up be more minimalistic after this. I’m a ladybug and I’ve been following your advice for ladybugs. Slowly we’re setting each room up to be the most functional!

The grandma question - my mom kept closets and entire rooms full of our old stuff..... I ended up moving back in with them with 3 kids and let me tell you, it is NOT a blessing! My kids don't want to play with most of it, and I am just always worried they'll break stuff. 2 totes would have been amazing and felt special, this is a burden.

Agreed! In our family there only ended up being one grandkid and he didn’t live nearby so he only played with the stuff here and there. And then he grew up (it happens so fast!) and the grandma died. We are now decluttering 40+ year old toys, many of which were never played with.

The get ready caddy! ⭐️ I had no idea why this worked for me, but your exactly right! My bathroom counter is a mess with face wash, and hair ties, and misc, but I have a makeup bag and that system has worked for me for years! It has my everyday skincare in it too. I work from home, but often put my makeup on in the car (hubby drives don’t worry!) when headed to church or to meet friends. Everything is contained, and I can use it in the bathroom, or at my desk, or bring it in the car, and then everything goes back when I’m done. I’m sorting out my counter this weekend and getting a container I can dump it all in. One of my drawers in the vanity is like this- a cup for makeup brushes, a container for all the skincare that’s open right now, small cup for tiny hair clips, bin for hair ties, clips for getting ready, and Bobby pins. I understand myself better now! Thank you! I created this system for my husband a while back, but don’t know why I didn’t apply it to myself! 🤦‍♀️

Cass, love you and your channel! I’ve followed you for YEARS!!! And you just get better and funnier with every year!!!❤❤❤ Anyway, my question is about planners-I’m a recovering planner junkie😂and I have several planners for each year! Trying to just use one all year long now. Anyway, I like to look back to see when things occurred, etc., it’s kinda like a diary! Anyway, I know some of these can be discarded, especially the ones I didn’t use for long. But I don’t want to just toss them, as they have personal info in them-but who has time to tear pages out to shred them? So what do I do with the ones I want to get rid of, and then do I store rest in a large tote? Like one a year? Ack! The struggle is real!! 😅 Thanks so much and can’t wait til next weekend-our church is having a charity yard sale 5/13 so definitely a deadline to work toward!! 🎉

I keep hearing you say that over thinkers are detailed people. Or perfectionists. I do want to say that there is definitely a lot of non detailed people who are overwhelmed and indesisive or maybe they have made so many mistakes in their lives their trust on their own judgement isn't there too. I am just putting that out there that if you are an over thinker it may not be that you are detailed. All this coming from a butterfly over thinker. 😉 But I will say that action is the best remedy for overthinking always. So if an over thinker is reading this...... start with Small spots. Just start somewhere. Start with the easy. Perspectives change. You will build muscles and some things may be hard for you so skip those things and circle back later because there is always something easier for you to tackle first. 😊 And if things creep back in it isn't your fault. That is life. Don't beat your self up. Just jump back in and reset those spaces again. You aren't a failure. You aren't hopeless. You can make progress. ❤ You can do this for you. You are worth it. You are amazing. You are capable. ❤

My daughter is working hard to break the hoarding/pack-rat cycle, but I see so much of what I did raising her was the same as my mom did raising me. I get my mom's need to hold onto things as a baby boomer with 13 siblings, everything became precious. Unfortunately, now as a widow with low vision, it's now all too much. Keep a tub of disinfectant wipes in every room and try to remember to wipe the door knob, door edge where hands grab, sink handles, washer door, etc. Use the disinfecting cycle on your dishwasher. Wipe the bannister, outside door handles, anywhere you use hands. You can buy Clorox laundry sanitizer kills 99% bacteria on laundry. Give everyone a garbage bag to throw Kleenex in so no one else is touching them. Open a window very slightly to let air in for half hour or so…even if just kitchen window…put a timer on your phone. I am doing a winter whole house reset/ declutter extravaganza. Major Ladybug with cricket husband. He told my Mom he is afraid to sit too still because I might haul him off to the Salvation Army thrift store. I have been binge listening to your podcasts, Audible books and youtube channel this last two weeks. It is quite shocking to listen to you talk about yourself and hear only my own self/story coming out of your mouth. Especially when you said you sometimes feel embarrassed about your blessed abundent life. We work so hard for what we have and then we feel ashamed of our abundence. But I have hauled off 4 Outback loads of stuff to the Salvation Army, 5 Outback loads of just trash( including things I wouldn't even donate), and 4 boxes of good stuff to work and made a "free to good home" table, which was emptied by the end of each day. My husband has even started tossing in some of his own "crap" and tidying up his "piles" on the coffee table. I gave him a basket to put it in and he is using it. I cannot even begin to thank you for your help and encouragement.

My understanding is hoarding may mean feeling the item is a part of yourself or your “fantasy self”, assigning the same importance to everything, assigning importance to worthless items, difficulty categorizing and sorting things, difficulty understanding how much can fit into a defined space, difficulty stacking things to make a tall pile stable, feeling overwhelmed or not enough resiliency to deal with loss of something (such as totaled car, burglary, house fire) or someone (I.e., divorce, best friend moved, messy breakup, death, miscarriage).

I slept on this video last night after doing my dishes (yippee!). Now this morning because I did my dishes, I could take 5 minutes and put away clean dishes to have a clean kitchen surface. Now the frig is next.

I watched Sunday night too but couldn't comment because I was busy decluttering. (I was up 'till midnight filling up the trash bin.) I thought the question about the medical receipts was really good. One reason I have so much paper is because I had surgery a few years ago. Not only did I have to keep track of medical receipts for tax purposes, but dealing with the my high deductible insurance plan and the mountains of paper it generated was another challenge. This might be a good subject for a future video. At this point, it is taking me more than day to deal with paper clutter so I've been applying some of Dana's principles to the paper issue the same way she applies them to dishes and laundry. For example, I need a calculator to figure out my grocery store receipts so a friend suggested that I do the calculations in the store, instead of at home. I "take it there now" by doing the calculations in the store. It only takes me less than 3 minutes but I did find that they overcharged me on an item last week and resolved it that day. If I pay cash, I throw the receipt out immediately but file it away immediately and throw it out when the bill comes in if I'm using a charge card. This method is really helping me keep my receiots under control. Thanks again to you, Dawn and Dana for your advice. You keep us motivated and your tips really help.

I feel that way every day, with constantly taking up all my time trying to clean, but I can never catch up, and it makes my chronic pain, depression, and ADHD worse. I'd love to do one of these events, classes, or to hire someone to help, but it's so frustrating that you have to have money to really get help. I was trying to watch this to help me with motivation to keep cleaning, but I have to stop because I'm just getting more frustrated.

If a stairway, and nothing under it, then make that into your storage for those extra big pots and pans and cookers that you don’t use all the time you would have plenty a room for shelves, and under the steps you could even make pull out drawers……. that would be a great project for a weekend.

I found a cool way to declutter those dishes that you've had forever but don't use often. These are dishes that have been in the family and inherited. I give them as gifts to the younger members of our family and I include a note of how old the dish is and how it got into the family. So far everyone is loving them and cherishing them. I'm not missing them and the older I get the more I like knowing where those treasured things are. I always tell the person to keep it in the family and pass it on when you're ready.

I’m extremely detailed. I make lists about lists! But I also have adhd. So get distracted. I am visual so need to have everything out. But I love containers to put everything in. I have containers inside containers as I like to sort things to almost microscopic levels! I have so much stuff. And millions of houseplants and craft supplies! Lost cause I think!

@Clutterbug so this explains while I may be good at initially organizing, I am terrible at maintaining it. Example:. I bought also those nifty little drawer organizers for your clothing drawers.. Helps with that Marie Kondo folding technique, so everything stands up and side by side. So pretty... HOWEVER, I have too many clothes to all fit neatly that way. When I did laundry .....even if I folded clothes, I never seemed to get them put away! I NEED TO DONATE THOSE THINGS, LOL. and go back to plain folded stacks. 😆 I just got your book ...the Decluttering Challenge Journal. I am so excited to start! I love the fun layout and graphics!
