When I was in music school, we always had to call the 7th chord versions either "half-diminished 7th" or "fully diminished 7th". If we said "diminished 7th" we'd get marked wrong for being not specific enough. They were picky like that. We could call the triad one just "diminished". m7(b5) was more of a jazz name that we knew about but didn't use in school as my courses were 99% classically-oriented.

The Dim7 is also called the 'Fully Diminished' without needing to say 7th. It is a beautiful part of music and Antoine has made everything more 'Grabbable' and each place in the Key equally loveable.

Perfect! I totally agree with you. Even if, in absolute terms, « half diminished » means nothing. I prefer m7b5 (minor seven flat five).

Thank you Antoine, this is deep stuff, and thank you for drilling down. As a trained bassist and songwriter I feel like it should be pointed out that re: the usage of the diminished (m7b5) is pure within the major scale (VII m7b5) and the Pure Minor scale(II m7b5)...and then gets interesting in the 2 other Minor Scales, A) Harmonic Minor, (II m7b5, , and VII dim 7, and the B) (Melodic) Jazz Minor, where VI m7b5, and VII m7b5) come into play. And....so you get the afro-cuban and Bossa influences. It's a Wonderful World and there's room for it all !

Small world ...I found this channel randomly looking up help with theory a while ago... I just realized your academy is a short bike ride away down the street( I'm at Jean-Talon/St.Dominic ) . Best lessons Ive found so far peut-être je devrais-m'inscrire à des cours?

Oh, is that true? That means I forgot to change the address! The Jean-Talon address was just a PO box at a UPS store I was using not to give my real address to my subscribers. I since then moved out of Montreal to the suburbs, so I should update that. Thanks!

If we memorize something that we can't understand, then when someone like you (that does understand) presents an accurate variation, those that don't understand will just see that you didn't memorize the "right" (identical) way, and they will be confused until they understand how to derive variations for themselves.

...that is why I have never been in favor of 'memorizing' chords without understanding the concepts that are used to build the chords.
