Wow! The shellac made it look amazing. Can' t wait to see the finished product. Also, I think black chrome would look great on that guitar.

Dan, how have I missed you building a purple guitar... (my favorite color lol). I almost used shellac on my SRC6 (I finally finished it! matte black is so sexy on it), but what I had said it would be a clear-golden so I wasn't sure. What you used looks great here. Which I now realize is... the same thing I have, but mine is in a spray can XD. Watching you put it on, wow, it goes from "this is sanded, plain, and boring" to POP. This is going to look GREAT when it's done.

I have been watching you for years, and I really enjoy your videos. You and others gave me the confidence to create my own guitars and eventually it ended up being a side job with a established brand that I create about 15 guitars a year (all I have time for). So thank you!! I really, really loved the purple black burst LP you did back when - and I was really glad to see you give a new purple burst run, and on a 335 type guitar. I am contemplating doing something similar myself as I am still out of a proper semi-hollowbody guitar. Anyway - thank you for what you do, and for keep doing it for guitar build junkies like me 😊👍

So far, you're building it exactly how I would. I think the extra work on the front really paid off. I would be terribly tempted to use a gold glittered clear coat instead of shellac, but I do have a soft spot for old school techniques. Black hardware, nickel chrome black would be cool if you could find a bridge.

It's always satisfying seeing the finish applied. On the couple guitars I've built that is the moment it starts to feel like a real guitar. I used tung oil for the necks and wipe-on poly on the body and got pretty good results. I'm impatient, so I didn't build it up as much as some would lol 🤣. Love the way this one is turning out. I like the fact that the fade isn't perfect.

Shellac should be safe from spontaneous combustion. It’s not oil based.

I'm more of a fan of a satin or eggshell finish. But unfortunately I was occupied when the livestream aired. So if it matters, satin or eggshell. I would be curious how the shellac and tru-oil would work on the neck. I'm thinking I'll do Shellac and tru-oil for my next finish.

You only really need to sand it if there's a problem though. Like a drip, dust, hair, etc. That way you don't lock that into the finish when you re coat. Just keep building it up, and sand and polish at the end of it. Make sure though, that it's fully, fully dry before you do. Alright? You can pickup polishing wheels for your drill from most auto shops for pretty cheap. Like 8 bucks or so a wheel. I use auto body compound and polish. Comes out cherry. But, if the grains aren't filled and sanded flat, it's going to take a very very long time to get a full gloss finish. Oil just isn't thick enough. Neither is shellac. Alright, I'm done giving my 2 cents Dan. It's looking good dude. Keep on keeping on

I haven't seen all the part of this series, but are you sealing over the stain before you apply the shellac? I recently used the Zinsser clear on a build for the first time and I really liked it, but as I applied coats I noticed it was pulling up my stain a bit. I'm still pretty happy with it, but I might do a sealer after the stain next time, just wanted to know what all you had done.

That finish is coming out great and I think would look awesome in a satin finish.
@insearchoftone96022 жыл бұрын
You have probably already mentioned, but is there a specific shellac (not brand) that you use? Like is there tinted and non tinted? Gloss/satin? I have been putting off doing the finish on my first kit because im kinda nervous. Also I found some small chips in the veneer, is there an easy way to repair that which won't show through?
@JCtheGeek21872 жыл бұрын
I love how the Shellac changes how the instrument finish looks instantly. I think a final satin finish would look best. As far as pickup rings, I think black would look best, regardless of what the hardware is. That's just me, and I'm sure I'm in the minority.

My favorite finish is danish oil and French polish. For shellac, the layers will melt into one another as it is an alcohol based finish that is it’s own solvent. It does do well with sanding between coats just because it doesn’t go on very smoothly without high and low spots (brush or rubber strokes).
