Except it *is* kind of true (also lmao I'm sorry I wrote like three paragraphs for a topic that didn't call for it). Not in the sense that we're actually rid of these movies. By all indications, Disney will continue cranking these out until the heat-death of the universe, because they've boiled the whole process down to a reliable enough formula that it's highly unlikely (or it will take the bottom falling out of Hollywood as a whole) for them to not make money on these. But I think for a lot of people, Endgame acting as the endpoint to almost all of the major plot points for basically all the Marvel movies up to that point provided a viable off-ramp. Like I cannot honestly say I have given a damn about any of these movies since then. And I wasn't like one of the anti-Marvel movie crowd; I *liked* a lot of these. But by the time the credits rolled on Endgame, I was kind of just... exhausted, for lack of a better term? It was so many movies, for so long, all building up to this extravaganza. I was done. That was the emotional release. The end of a decade of build-up. There wasn't any reason for me to keep going. It's not even about the (perfectly legitimate) criticisms you can lob at the whole project, although those are fair and they don't increase my motivation to see the newer Marvel films. It's not even about superhero fatigue (although, again, that's not helping, either). The new movies could be legitimately good movies, genre aside (and maybe some of them are; I don't know, that's kind of the point), but it wouldn't matter because I can't *do it* again. It's too much. I'm burned out. And I know from talking to others that I'm not the only one.

@@BeccaMoses "canon" is a pretty bad idea. There are probably dozens of Marvel characters who, "in canon", became "the most powerful hero" for some stretch of time, often in year two of their solo series, if they ever got one. It's a lot better to focus on writing a good story than on "canon".

Yep, I felt the same. It was just a shallow Hollywood move giving lip-service to ideals they really couldn't care less about. It felt like a studio's marketing move. "See all the strong female characters in our movie! We're so feminist now!" Meanwhile, all the superheroes were basically "Abercrombie and Finch" models, and the only person who didn't fit Hollywood's toxic beauty standards was ridiculed the entire movie about "being fat" and "being less of a man"! You know Hollywood's feminism is fake when they support the toxic patriarchical standards for masculinity, 😒🤬 Thor, didn't deserve the ridicule and humiliation he got, 😫

Not saying you're wrong re: the beloved character, but.. does every death of a female main character count as "fridging" now? I'm not that's what happened to the beloved character whose name I won't spoil.

About burritos: So, one time during high school me and my friends were going to spend all weekend playing DnD and doing other assorted stupid things. My friend's parents were gone for the weekend, so it was just us. One of my friends (the rich one) decided that he would subsist off of chalupas the entire weekend. So, we pulled into the Taco Bell drive through and it went something like this: "Welcome to Taco Bell, do you want " (I forget w/e abomination was the special at this time) "?" "No thanks, I would like forty seven chalupas. No lettuce." ". . . seven chalupas?" "No, forty. seven. chalupas. No we aren't high, our friend is just an idiot." "One moment please" What followed was, I'm sure, a frantic conversation with the cook staff, the manager, and the 'your order will take less then 5 minutes sign'. "Ok, the total will be xx" I forget, but it was in the 50-60 dollar range. We then pull up to the window and see the entire crew frantically stuffing chalupas into wrappers. SOBs made it under the time limit, props were due. A $100 bill was exchanged, and we had a good weekend. But yeah, 10 burritos bad. 47 Chalupas (no lettuce) probably worse, health wise.

I haven't seen Captain Marvel. But the fact that Captain Marvel literally just shows up at the start to save the plot, goes away, and then shows up at the end and destroys Thanos' big bad spaceship (effectively rescuing the plot again), and they continually explain that she isn't there and "why"... It feels like all the old jokes about Justice League - "they have Superman, why have anyone else in the League?" Where are the stakes, when she's involved? But Dan's comment about Scarlet Witch not showing Thanos who she is and why he should care seems... a glaring omission. I didn't realise until now. Sad.

I would dare to say it's not about "this Thanos." It's about what Thanos embodies. The terrible, tyrannical, narcissistic father. It goes back to everything the series began with, Tony's struggle between self-involvement and heroism. That's the thing that does the most work to redeem Iron Man 2, btw.

Because ain't that just an apt description of every goddamn MCU TV show.

I was actually riveted for the first... was it an hour? I thought it was just a half an hour. Anyways, I thought it was great. It completely refuted Thanos's spiel about how killing half the universe would make life better for everybody, because it didn't. Everyone's just traumatized, and trying to deal with the losses. I would have loved to watch an entire movie about superheroes coming to terms with their new reality. So if you don't like superhero movies, the first 30-60 minutes of Avengers: The Endgame gets 4 stars from me.

I'm still surprised they haven't done anything with the Five years, like that's such a large amount of time that everyone just seems to shrug off as "Oh that happened." I felt like maybe it would have been neat if it had been a time loop, where Thanos was sent back to the past but under the impression that he'd win, leading to him in Infinity war seeing himself as 'destiny' and all that, certain that he'll be victorious, which would have at least made him the same PERSON, but even then you'd still have the same issue of this Thanos having no connection to the heroes.

But Thanos already saw the consequences of what he did... through Nebula's memory scans... or whatever. And even if Scarlet Witch did make him experience all those events mentally & personally to the point of possible remorse... I would argue that Thanos has consistently been portrayed as a character who is so driven by ego that he'd find some way to justify all the horrible stuff he did one way or another.

Endgame only works as a film if you are an obsessive fanboy/girl/whatever and are able to view each movie as an episode instead of an actual movie, and thus treat this movie as a series finale where you recognize literally every single beat and reference the story is trying to make. For those who aren't any of that, watching the movie is likely to feel average and confusing, but you ended up watching it anyway because everything in our culture convinced you to see it. Basically the epitome of someone really wanting to tell you a joke you won't understand and then their response is "well you had to be there". And that's how Marvel managed to get butts in seats.
