Going back to review this series, I think of how much Martin took from Jordan. Which is fine ASOIAF Is great,,. But man, Martin started his series relatively shortyly after WOT. So it’s clear he took ideas

I don't think he did, really. Rather, both works are deconstructing the fantasy genre, so they are both playing around with very common ideas and tropes, like the secret royal scion raised in hiding, or the absolute evil menace that everyone is supposed to join together to fight, or the hero with a magic sword discovering his true parentage. This stuff comes from King Arthur and tons of other fantasy works, and by RJ & GRRM are taking those ideas to look at and present in a more realistic light, to deconstruct what it means to be asked to save the world, how it feels to suddenly discover you are not who you thought you are and that you now have duties you never expected to face. They examine what it truly takes to unify people to face a common threat and to put aside their petty differences. And they both come to similar conclusions - that it sucks and is very hard. It's not that one or the other stole ideas, although I think GRRM acknowledged that the success of Wheel of Time, both creatively and commercially, inspired or assured him that he could make an epic like he had in mind work (and it's probably the success of Game of Thrones that has allowed the adaptation of WoT to happen), but rather they were both working with the same body of fantasy literature in mind when the developed their stories.

Aside from the Cleansing, 7, 8, 9, and 10 were a slog and hard for me to get through. The opening of the book (Galad killing Valda) made me so psyched for this book. For me, this book is the point where it all turns around and the rest of the series is a thrill ride of awesome. Great review. I haven’t read the books since the last one came out and this was an awesome refresher to remind me about how much I love this series.

I ended up liking Galad more than Gawyn as well. I could understand him trying to always do what he thinks is right. Though I generally like Elayne as a character, she often got on my nerves with a lot of her reckless actions.

Elayne is, ironically, the character most like Galad in her adherence to what she thinks is right. She's not as fixed on what that is, but she is always putting what she believes to be the greater good and her duty ahead of her personal preferences and comforts. She isn't all that reckless though. More than any other character, she has to put up with extreme and absurd attempts to coddle her and keep her safe when there are important things she has to do. Notice that when the trio are walking through Cairhien in Dragon Reborn, Elayne is the only one keeping watch? She, not the country girls who are so proud of their tracking and movement skills, is the one to spot the bandit ambush, even if she ends up with a skull fracture for her trouble. She was also prudent enough to run from the Seanchan, both times they showed up, evading capture, unlike Egwene and Min, even though she is ashamed of herself, and dissuading Nynaeve and the Windfinders from making futile rescue sorties back into Ebou Dar. She also decides to unravel the gateway to cover their tracks so the Seanchan can't follow them to Andor. She was the one being extra cautious about Galad and Maseema in Fires of Heaven. People call Elayne reckless, because other characters say so, but really, they are more concerned with her safety than is necessary. She is first suggested to be reckless, because she wanted to see Logain, which was perfectly safe, Morgase was just being overprotective. People say she is reckless because she trusts in Min's viewing, but she really only quotes that to make people stop trying to suffocate her when she has important work to be doing. It is Elayne who is very aware that the viewing only covers up to childbirth and that they could still die as babies. When Aviendha freaks out about endangering Elayne with her ter'angreal experiments, Elayne uses Min's viewing to reassure Aviendha that she was safe, but in her own head, Elayne is very much aware that Min's viewing does not mention other dangers like being burned out. One of Elayne's important traits is that she is very smart, with an analytical mind. That means that she often sees dangers other people do not, but it also means that she can assess risks very quickly and figure out which risks HAVE to be taken, because it is more dangerous to do nothing. Like going after the Darkfriend cell in Andor. She knew they were assassinating Kinswomen and they had planted an officer in her troops. If she sat around waiting for more information, that means more people being assassinated to further their agenda. As a member of the Green Ajah, it is her duty to protect people from Shadow-sworn channelers, and as an aspiring queen of Andor, it is her duty to protect people from darkfriends and murderers. Lots of readers trash her for things she had no way of knowing and no way of finding out, namely, that Temaile, Eldrith, Asne & Chesmal were in the city with a stun-gun ter'angreal. Even the other darkfriends had no idea they were there. There was nothing Elayne could have done that would have guaranteed there were no other darkfriends. That's why Elayne does not regret her actions, even as she mourns the people who got killed (Although one was Vandene who clearly was not going to outlive her sister's killer by very long and the other was Sareitha, who is pretty dumb for a Brown sister, so it's not like it's much of a loss). Another "risk" Elayne took was joining the sisters in the nightmare in Tel'Aran'Rhiod, because if she did nothing, they were going to die. If those three die, Egwene probably never becomes Amyrlin, and even if she does, they will form half her blackmail team, so she'd end up with a Keeper over whom she has no control. Elayne tells Siuan they have to enter the scenario so that the sisters who got stuck in it because they ignored her advice, can hear their instructions on banishing the nightmare. It is a huge risk, but it's one she takes to save lives. Elayne's risks are generally well-thought out. Either they are not as risky as other people think, or the payoff is important enough to justify the danger. One thing that is important in the series, is not to trust what characters say about each other, or even what they think about themselves, because a theme of the series is misunderstandings and perception. You have to look at what they actually do, rather than what people tell you about them.

@@flameracer93 Ehh...I don't know. Min should have done a lot of things differently. She knows danger to her triggers Rand, and that he will act recklessly to protect her. She knows he's hearing LTT's voice (and bear in mind the guy is remembered mostly for killing the woman he loves) so she should understand that he's afraid of repeating the OG Dragon's infamy. Her power isn't nearly as useful as she claims, since everything she views comes true no matter what, so all she can really do is give bad news or spoil pleasant surprises. Furthermore, the last two times Rand was taken captive, having a bondholder with the rescue force was critical in the recovery effort, and she's given away their connection with her inability to be discreet, so the best place for her is with Bashere's reaction force. She is also pretty ineffectual with her knives. A much better person to be Rand's non-channeling woman would be a noble who would impress the Seanchan or a Maiden who could actually protect him. But Min uses sex to secure the slot for herself. On the other hand, it was Rand's decision not to hold the power and to give in to Min's wheedling, when he absolutely knows about the LTT problem, and fails to even try explaining his position. Ultimately, Rand is the one in charge and making the calls, so it's on him. The Pattern didn't make Min the chosen hero to face the Dark One, because Min is a terrible choice for that. Rand is supposed to be the good pick and he needs to act like it. It's symbolically appropriate that his own errors cost him, because he's hit a point of diminishing returns in his efforts to protect himself from pain and loss. He's clutching so hard that things are squeezing out of his hands. Other people can't make the decision to do better for him, it has to come from him. Cadsuane is trying to teach him, but she's on the verge of failing epicly and for similar reasons of trying to control too much. So Min could have been as smart and thoughtful and in as much of a "what's best for Rand" mode as possible, and something still would have gone bad, because Rand ain't right in the head. Think of her viewing that Perrin had to be at Dumai's Wells for Rand to succeed. It doesn't look like he did anything important, since Rand freed himself and Perrin had nothing to do with the Asha'man showing up, but Perrin's presence probably gave Rand a little more ta'veren nudge to make the right choices. For one thing, it was Perrin telling him about the rescue force that might have made Rand insist on driving off the Shaido instead of huddling behind the force field until they could Travel to safety like Taim wanted. I think it's important to recognize stuff like this about Min and other characters, especially ones that so many shallow fans gush over for her spunk or whatever, but ultimately, the thing about Min is that she's not all that powerful and CAN'T have that much effect with her direct choices and decisions. She has to have an effect in other ways. Rand has the power so it's on Rand that the blame has to fall.

He turned on his clan out of racism, and aided and abetted the Shaido and their crimes. He lets the Shaido enslave wetlanders and does nothing until he himself is inconvenienced, and he shares in the Shaidos' crime. If Rolan is so much better than the Shaido, why he is taking wetlanders "gai'shain" like they do? In short, screw Rolan and his sanctimonious pretensions. When the choice was difficult, he didn't do the right thing, and went along with what he claims to despise.

@@Aaronsbookreviews IDK, the books generally stay with one character for a few chapters before switching and they don't come back to a plot line more than once or twice. There's like three Perrin & Mat episodes, two Rand episodes, two Elayne and one each Egwene & Nynaeve, the latter nested in the middle of a Rand part. You don't need to jump THAT much, especially if it's going to throw you off so badly that you elide significant events or developements.

I think the key point with Semirhage, is not that hearing voices was untreatable, but that in rare instances an ACTUAL past life/soul was entwined with a person, so the voice wasn't simple insanity but something real. Also it was Mat's agency in choosing to trust Tuon to her men and destroy the attacking army without her request which spurred her to complete the marriage ceremony, rather than her asking him to. Minor but key point imho.

I had disliked Egwene and Nynaeve for most of the series - too arrogant and self-confident despite being constantly reminded of how little they actually knew of history or the larger world around them. Boy did that change for Egwene in this one - all the suffering and "lessons" they tried to inflict and she just used it, learning from her time spent with the Aiel, turning every punishment into additional motivation to drive more sisters to recognize Elaida for what she is. I'm reading book 12 now and can't wait to see how it all resolves eventually.

- Eamon Valda was not a darkfriend. Unless you meant that he serves the Seanchan, when you said the Shadow. - The Forsaken’s job is not “kill good guys” their job is “do the bare minimum so the Dark One does not get mad at you, and spend the rest of your time doing the thing you love that made you turn to the Shadow in the first place”. They had higher priorities than killing two commoners who can’t even channel. If Rand or Mat or Perrin dies to defeat the Shadow, that’s a win for them. If the Forsaken die defeating Rand, that’s a loss. They don’t care about the Dark One or their cause, they care about themselves first, last and always. They are only loyal to the Shadow because of what it does for them, but if they get killed fighting, they lose any gain from serving the Dark One, so they avoid confrontations if they can help it. From a Forsaken perspective, if the Dark One is defeated but a Forsaken survives, that’s a win. It’s not ideal, since they don’t have access to their Shadow resources, but it does mean he won’t punish them for not winning, either. - Aram tried to kill Perrin before he encountered Rolam and Faile. - Rand sent Logain to deal with the Seanchan in the prior book. In this one, Bashere is meeting with them to finalize the arrangements for their meeting. Logain does NOT say the loyal Asha’man are stretched thin, he says the OPPOSITE. When Rand questions why Taim would build the Black Tower up as well as he has, Logain says it’s because the majority of the Tower are loyal to Rand, not Taim, so he has to work secretly and conceal his clique within the larger organization. He says something similar in his first appearance as an Asha’man, telling one of his followers that Taim wants him dead, which is a surprise to the other guy, because Taim has to be friendly to Logain in public, since Logain accepted Rand’s amnesty. - Lan is not operating under any prophecy at all. There is no prophecy anyone knows about concerning him or his role as king of Malkier. - It’s Bashere who returns from negotiations with the Seanchan. Rand’s part in the books opens with him talking to Loial. - Rand lost his left hand. There is PICTURE of it in your video, with him holding up his left hand to the fireball! - Egwene does not get anyone except some novices on her side in this book. The important people she speaks to spend most of their time punishing her. She is not brilliant at peaceful protests or anything, she is merely gossiping and trying to make people blame Elaida for things Elaida has no control over. Everything Egwene “accomplishes” in her stint in the Tower is actually an own goal on Elaida’s part. Elaida had every right, even an obligation to execute Egwene as soon as she was caught, and Egwene even expects that, but she randomly decides to try to save Egwene and reform her from the rebels’ cause. She just does a lousy job at it. - Elayne’s bodyguard had nothing to do with the ambush. He was IMPRISONED when it happened. Elayne had him arrested, once she knew who his handlers were and then she captured his whole cell, before another group of Black sisters whom no one, not even the Darkfriends she captures knew were in the city, showed up with a stun-gun ter’angreal of their own accord. - Birigtte’s warder bond has nothing to do with her figuring out what happened. She figured it out, because she was there and she’s not an idiot. When a bunch of Aes Sedai go into a darkfriend hideout, and their Warders suddenly react to their bondholders dying, even the ordinary troops realize what’s up. - Elayne’s victory doesn’t rely on any real change in her at all. We know she’s an independent thinker from her first encounter with Rand. We know she’s brave, because Nynaeve noticed her hands were not shaking after they escaped the Seanchan when they arrived on Toman Head in book 2. We know she has a great analytical mind from her review of the Black Ajah dossier in Book 3. We see in book 4 that Moiraine is impressed by her political knowledge and analyses and that she is well advanced of Nynaeve & Egwene in that knowledge, and that Rand finds her advice and lessons very helpful in his own political agenda governing Tear. And that’s how Elayne wins the battle for Andor, using all the qualities she’s been demonstrating from day one. She refuses to let her people hustle her back inside the Palace after her rescue, because she’s brave and independent, and she uses her analytical abilities to take what Birgitte tells her about the situation and figure out that the nobles are going to be with the party attacking the gate and the opportunity to capture them. It’s not a change in Elayne, it’s everything Jordan has been telling us about her manifesting. - Mat does not use cannons against the Seanchan and he did not invent the crossbows, they were invented by a guy off the page, and Tallanvor bought them and commissioned their manufacture. - “Let the Lord of Chaos rule” is a way of saying that someone isn’t really in charge, it’s not all out of place. Taim is warning the Red sisters that they are not going to be in charge of their Warders for long. This is not the revelation to the readers that he is a Darkfriend, that came in Winter’s Heart when other Darkfriends recall Taim giving orders to them to kill Rand.

@@jayfinnegan2023 No, the Warder bond doesn't tell Birgitte anything useful, only that Elayne is suddenly sad. The reaction of the OTHER Warders is what decides Birgitte & company that Elayne is in trouble, since it indicates all the other sisters are dead.

Did you read the books or listen to them? The lord of Chaos was all about how the forsaken (at least Damodred) were ordered by the dark one in shayol ghul to NOT kill Rand but "let the lord of chaos reign". There are many other points where one darkfriend type character stops a plot by someone to kill Rand.

Uhlbelk I have read and listened to them. I totally get that and i believe I conveyed my point poorly here. Basically these people need to work on their communications skills and so does the dark one. They get conflicting orders, have conflicting views and constantly that results in major screw ups. It doesn’t make sense to me that the dark one would want anything but Rand dead and same with all of his friends. If it’s the one person who could stop you then definitely kill that person. See what I’m saying?

@@DanielGreeneReviews I am late to the discussion, so you probably won't see this. Moridin had ordered the rest of the forsaken to sow chaos, but to leave Rand alone. Lanfear is punished severely for breaking this rule. The communication we get from the books is partial because we are expected to infer how each forsaken tried to twist their orders to suit themselves best.

@@DanielGreeneReviews The Forsaken don't believe Rand can stop the Dark One. They are very aware that Rand can kill them. So there is no reason to go after him unless the Dark One makes them do it. The Forsaken made their deals with the Dark One for eternal life and great power, not because they love him or truly believe in his cause (except for Ishammael in his iterations), so risking their lives for the Dark One is stupid. They only take risks if the Dark One demands they do so. And there is no payoff in their eyes to killing Rand that justifies the risk of exposing themselves to danger. That's why they don't cooperate against Rand. Because on a battlefield with, say, Rahvin, Sammael and Rand, to Rahvin's eyes, Sammael is the most dangerous threat and to Sammael, Rahvin is the most dangerous threat. So to each of them, the best priority is to kill their fellow Chosen, even if it means helping Rand, because whether Rand or the other Forsaken dies, you're going to have to fight the winner someday. And the Forsaken would rather worry about some kid from this barbaric era who doesn't know ANYthing compared to them, who has no Shadow resources, who can't even use the True Power and whom the Dark One is going flatten like a bug if they can just wait long enough. So Rahvin would prefer to backstab Sammael, Sammael would prefer to backstab Rahvin and each of them knows this about the other, so they won't cooperate to take Rand down. Because they might be dumb enough to believe the Dark One will make them king of the world, but they are not stupid enough to trust a Forsaken.

That's why they turned in the first place getting people like that to coordinate. Will be nearly impossible aimoy die to the nature of the people. Oh, how I hate the Succession plotline. Elayne does so much stuff that should lose her at least part of her support, yet she only keeps gaining it:/ I don't consider the storyline to be as boring as some do, but it's just full of wasted potential.

Really? I don't see how she should lose support. I could see not thinking some of her moves are not great, though I would argue she does the best she can with what she's got, but I don't see why Dyelin or the kids would turn against her. As for the reasons why the lords who join her at the end give her their support, they were totally out of options at that moment, and she had not done anything openly offensive, so they could rationalize giving in to the inevitable. Elayne might not have enough votes to get the crown at that point, but she controls a plurality and no one else can get enough either. She has Dyelin, herself, the four kids, and the three Houses that came over from Arymilla. Arymilla & Naean are her captives and unable to give support to anyone else. Naean is 100% committed to Arymilla and can't vote for anyone else. So the best the neutral faction can get together are their own six votes, a seventh from the one who won't commit and maybe try to persuade Jarid Sarand to join their cause (which would be pretty hard when Elayne has his wife hostage) for eight, against Elayne's nine, with two votes permanently off the board. Their ONLY hope was for Dyelin to come around and accept their support and add her vote to theirs, but instead, she tells them that she's irrevocably committed to Elayne. So now they have no leg to stand on. They simply have no way apparent to break away any more of Elayne's votes and can't get enough of their own, and the Borderlanders are there, and the Black Tower is there, and who knows what's up with the White Tower and the Dragon Reborn is running wild and has Aiel armies and is RIGHT NEXT DOOR in Cairhien and there is rebellion in western Andor and they can't do jack shit about these problems until they settle on a queen. And now Elayne, who is the legal heir and has proven herself to be a lot more in control of events than they thought and has won the support of their preferred queen, is right there, and has them in her power, and she's giving the best answers to their questions they can reasonably hope for, not to mention has made it clear that she is confident of the support of the White Tower - there are simply too many factors for them to keep fighting the tide. Even if they have a larger army, the rumors about methods Elayne has been using as force multipliers have to be affecting their confidence, plus it means wrecking their own capital city at this point. Elayne is not so clearly incompetent that her reign will be hopeless and they have no other choice, so they agree to go along when asked to do for the good of Andor. And while Dyelin's loyalty is the key to all of this, she has her own good reasons, some of which she articulates, and part of that has to do with Elayne's honesty and frankness when she first claimed the crown. Elayne admitted things that were not in her best interest to admit and then went ahead with a course of action Dyelin herself was too cautious to attempt, and apparently succeeded. Dyelin no doubt wanted the Aiel and Saldaeans and Legion of the Dragon out of Caemlyn and the Dragon banners removed, but she was afraid of the consequences of Rand's ire and their own greater power. That Elayne could convince them to leave and was willing to tear down the banners and came away with no real consequences other than a bun or two in the oven suggests to Dyelin that Elayne is a better candidate to achieve what Dyelin wants for Andor. She publicly promised Rand that if he restored the rightful line to the throne and removed his forces from Andor and let Andor be independent, she would follow him against the Shadow. That's a pretty clear statement of Dyelin's agenda, and Elayne went a long way to accomplishing all that.

Elayne pissed me off in this book. Yeah her being kidnapped turned out good for her ultimately, but her rashness and impulsivity, not only got A LOT of people killed, but got them burned out of the Pattern. And she does it over and over and over again.

1. Balefire does not burn you out of existence, it just kills you ahead of the moment of your death. The Dark One did not complain that Rahvin's soul was destroyed, just that Rand's balefire rolled back the window in which the Dark One can grab a newly killed soul to put in a new body. If balefire is such an awful death or an obliteration from existence, Rand would not have used it on Liah. As it was, he did it so she died before Mashadar got a hold of her. Rahvin, Liah and the soldiers who died at Asne's hands are all going to be reborn one day. 2. Elayne was not rash. Lots of characters call her that, because they don't follow her logic or the speed of her analyses. Elayne is just really quick at weighing risks and deciding which ones she has to take. Delaying her attack on the darkfriend house would not have provably changed things. Even Marillin & Falion didn't know Asne's group was in the city, they were only working with Careane. There was no way that a delay could provably have turned up the fact that there was a second group of Black sisters in the city and ready to strike. 3. The soldiers died fighting the Shadow which is a worthier death than fighting their own countrymen in a squabble over who gets to be queen. 4. Elayne HAD to attack as soon as she knew about them, because they were actively committing murders (or at least Careanne was doing it in coordination with them). Hanlon was killing people and he had to be stopped and once he was arrested, it would warn the Black cell and they'd disappear. Also, the fact that her agent had found Falion & Marillin was not something she could keep from the other sisters in the Palace for long and she KNEW one of them was Black, and so as soon as she told them, Careanne would warn her colleagues. 5. Elayne's actual attack came off perfectly. There was simply no way to know that the other Black cell a. existed and b. would choose that moment to strike. 6. It was the plans and precautions Elayne took that allowed her to be rescued and the second Black cell defeated so readily. And these things are unique to Elayne. Who else would have made Birgitte a general? Who else would have organized the channelers for gateway transport? Note that the whole rebel Aes Sedai force, including Egwene, did not think of it - they were constantly whining about running out of available supplies in the area. Elayne was the one who negotiated the terms of the Sea Folk deal whereby there ended up being enough of them in Caemlyn to fight the Black sisters and that they were subject to Birgitte's authority. 7. Elayne had Min's viewing to go off of and those are never wrong, except in circumstances so extreme (losing the Last Battle) that precautions are not worth bothering about.

@@Gunleaver You're right about the balefire, but for the rest... I'll admit that Elayne is very intelligent and even a good strategist in certain situations, but no one could be that far-seeing. The deals she made with the Kin and the Sea Folk worked out to where she could be saved, but she had no way of knowing she would get kidnapped, and that's why she made those deals. It was Birgitte that saved her, not Elayne's foresight. And if she really thought it through, she would have taken enough women to overwhelm any opposition. She should have had all the sisters link with a circle of 13 using the Kin. She could have taken the palace guard, smother them with arrows, or maybe even surreptitiously surround the place so she doesn't get kidnapped as easily. She could have done any number of things that wouldn't have ended up with so many dead.

@@cdubbau135 Well, she wasn't planning specifically for those eventualities, which no one can do (though people seem to expect her to have planned for a mystery Black cell to come out of nowhere). Yes, Birgitte saved her, but she could only do that because Elayne, A. saved her life by bonding her and B. appointed her Captain-General over Birgitte's objections. The point was, Elayne knew certain things would be good and worked for them. The things that were available for her rescue are things she put into place. If she hadn't made Birgitte general, she'd have been running around trying to convince people to help her instead of being able to order a bunch of channelers to make a gateway and a few thousand troops to attack the Darkfriends. As for taking "enough women to overwhelm any opposition" A. she did not have any more than she took. The Windfinders wouldn't have gone and the Kin are useless in combat. B. she had enough to overwhelm the opposition she anticipated. It was not a lack of strength that got her captured, it was the surprise attack with a ter'angreal, and sisters who could use the Power to kill without warning. Taking more people would only have meant more casualties. Surrounding the house would have only got the troops doing so killed by the death ray & Chesmal's unHealing weaves, and maybe too, would have led to spraying balefire around the city, with all sorts of innocent civilians for collateral damage. Birgitte HAD troops with her, and as soon as it was clear that all the sisters but Elayne were dead, she ran back for the Palace, because she knew they couldn't stand up to Aes Sedai. Remember, Perrin, Dobraine & Rhuarc took thousands of Aiel & 500 cavalry to chase after what they thought were six Aes Sedai and they were worried about the outcome. And they didn't have Birgitte's certain knowledge that they were facing Black sisters who were not bound by the Oaths. The sorts of numbers Elayne would need to pile up to stop them would have left a serious gap in her ability to defend the city.

Like, your thoughts on particular characters - why you like them, why you don't, if you've changed your mind throughout the series or after rereading? I'm also curious about your thoughts on the polyamorous relationships and if you agree with the shippings. Also, how do you feel women are presented in this book? I like many of the strong female characters, but at the same time feel like they sometimes - Nynaeve in particular - becomes a very stereotypical nagging woman :P I like regular review videos, but I LOVE when people discuss their ideas around the different issues and stuff that happens in a book :) :) Just a suggestion!
