When Rand escapes the first time, he kills a Warder with his bare hands and uses that guy's sword to kill another. That's his training with Rhuarc (and Gaul for a bit) paying off too.

“I forget nothing, Aes Sedai,” Rand said coldly. “I said six could come, but I count nine. I said you would be on an equal footing with the Tower emissaries, and for bringing nine, you will be. They are on their knees, Aes Sedai. Kneel!” Coldly serene faces stared back at him. He felt Asha’man readying shields of Spirit. Defiance grew on Kiruna’s face, on Bera’s, on others. Two dozen black-coated men made a ring around Rand and the Aes Sedai. Taim appeared as close to a smile as Rand had ever seen him. “Kneel and swear to the Lord Dragon,” he said softly, “or you will be knelt.” As stories do, the tale spread, across Cairhien and north and south, by merchant train and peddler and simple traveler gossiping at an inn. As stories do, the tale changed with every telling. The Aiel had turned on the Dragon Reborn and killed him, at Dumai’s Wells or elsewhere. No, the Aes Sedai had saved Rand al’Thor. It was Aes Sedai who had killed him,— no, gentled him, no, carried him to Tar Valon where he languished in a dungeon beneath the White Tower. Or else where the Amyrlin Seat herself knelt to him. Unusually for stories, it was something very close to truth that was most often believed. _On a day of fire and blood, a tattered banner waved above Dumai’s Wells, bearing the ancient symbol of Aes Sedai._ _On a day of fire and blood and the One Power, as prophecy had suggested,_ _the unstained tower, broken, bent knee to the forgotten sign._ The first nine Aes Sedai swore fealty to the Dragon Reborn, and the world was changed forever.

Biggest missed point is that over the course of the book, but especially after being stuffed in the chest, Rand effectively confronts and begins interacting with the soul of Lews Therin within him - its actually Lews Therin who shows him how to break out of the shield during the battle of Dumai's Wells. Also Egwene releasing Logain is less about compassion and more about the power dynamic between Rand and the White tower - they have to differentiate themselves somehow from the Tar Valon Aes Sedai, and not being hostile to the Asha'man is a clear way to do so.

@Sanfre0
@Sanfre0 4 жыл бұрын
Actually the memories are not caused by madness they are the lost memories mentioned with the first dragon mark and lews therin voice is what is mentioned about the second dragon mark, for the price he must pay. Once the Dragon, for remembrance lost. Twice the Dragon, for the price he must pay. When he fianlly has its epiphany in dragonmount the creator kinda protects him from madness making him and his memories from his past life merge into one person.

Oh, I actually didn't attribute that to madness. I think Lews Therin is actually in Rand's head. That doesn't make him insane, though it might help drive him there. I have only just finished this book Edit: I now see that the person who replied above me confirms what I already thought.

8:50 - "Shadowspawn can't go through way gates for no reason, it's just a random rule they have" iirc, it's not that shadowspawn can't use the way gates for no reason, but rather don't want to use it unless absolutely necessary, due to Machin Shin existing in the ways and essentially murdering anything in there if it finds them. So the shadowspawn are essentially scared shitless of the ways as much as anything else, but if the forsaken / whatever tell them to go through it, then the ways are the lesser of two evils

I know he hates child characters, but I really think Dan gets Olver wrong. This kid is the embodiment of the spirit of the band of the red hand. He is willfully ignorant sometimes but wise beyond his years. He is the mascot of Matrim's army. Olver is pretty much the spirit animal of the band if the red hand. A displaced youth that finds meaning in the collective goal of men who are unsure of their own goals. We the reader, take pleasure in the idea that Mat and his army ultimately have great importance inspite of themselves. They're out to have a good time yet they have the rogue moral; they fight gor something even when they deny it. One of my favorite scenes is when Olver descibes laying his head on the breasts of a very attractive woman whilst learning to read. Tom comments that he must play music before being allowed to do the same. The joke is funny because it reigns true. Mats army wins even when Mat is trying his best to escape. Mat is a lucky bastard with a purpose. He tried to slide through life to attend his own goals but finds mean8ng through fulfilling the will of the wheel. Olver is subsequently picked up and lead along the path of... SPOILERS.... The one who finally blows tge horn of Valere. The one who tried to escape his destiny is one of the most important through his own inate morality

"Let the Lord of Chaos rule." I believe this is the book where Rand really starts to talk to "Lews Therin". I believe it IS a manifestation of the madness, a fairly benign one to be sure all things considered. The memories ARE real as it turns out, Rand learns a lot from his past self. I think that Rand IS mad at this point but the wheel itself protects the person that is fated to defeat the Dark One. Or something like that. It is interesting how Nynaeve (much later on) when she learns to actually heal the madness cannot heal Rand, that he is too far gone BUT he is also not showing any sign of being mad, that there is some sort of glowing light between him and the thorns of madness. This also throws his distrust of Aes Sedai into overdrive, fun times.
@dalemurray4083
@dalemurray4083 5 жыл бұрын
I always believed that Lews Therron's inner voice was "The Dragon" trying to emerge while Rand clung to his personal identity and resisted fully becoming "The Dragon", in the same way Perrin struggled with becoming a wolf, while Mat accepted without thought his new identity, composed of the wisdon and knowelege aquired from his bargain with the fox people..
@signaltome
@signaltome 5 жыл бұрын
@@dalemurray4083 The Dragon was one of the titles/names given to Lews Therin (spelled by book check) and is the one known to history and legends, thus Rand being thd Dragon "Reborn" to finally end the dark one. (This cycle of the Wheel anyway) So it MUST be the "real" LT that is stuck in Rands head, in the sense that both persons used/are using the same soul. Personal head canon is that both the madness and the DOnes presence increasing is tearing away boundries between things, including the barrier between previous lives lived. Many of the Asha Man is also hearing voices though i don't think we are ever told exactly who. Their previous lives perhaps? Though the madness seem to manifest differently in different people, at least to start with.

Would like to talk about how they could deal with Rands role from the book in the tv series. Spoiler: I know that Rand doesn't get taken to halfway through the book but if they do a book a season or even close to that I think they could expand on that, really show how the Aes Sedai torture and try to break him and how he struggles against it and slowly succumbs to madness. Just really drive home the toll it takes on him and the lasting effects. That part of the book, from Perrin finding out Rand was taken straight through to the end of the book is probably my favourite arc in the whole series and I doubt I'm alone.

Corrections pt 1 - Book 6 kicks off with Demandred visiting Shayol Ghul and the actual villain, the Dark One himself, having dialogue. But I can see why that’s not worth mentioning. - Daniel seems to think that using Moghedian to teach them things is a crazy or dubious idea. They don’t just think she can teach them things, at this point they have forced her to teach them many, many things, including most of the new weaves that have made Nynaeve & Elayne the prize pupils in Salidar. They go on to use many of the weaves they learned from Moghedian to great effect in the later books, which give them several advantages over conventional sisters. - Perrin took 300 archers, and there is no “L” in ta’veren. - Morgase was not forced to sign a treaty, she offered to sign it when she mistook an ordinary event that had nothing to do with her, as an implicit threat. She was also not abused or sexually assaulted in Lord of Chaos, though she was in the prior and succeeding books, making this a really stupid place to mention it. There is no “new person in charge” of the Whitecloaks. Pedron Niall is in charge of the Whitecloaks, and has been for decades. Pedron Niall’s “awful things” pretty much consist of making nobles be nice to her and playing board games when she suggests it. - If you think there is not a lot of information coming out of the parts of the Forsaken plotting, you’re missing way too much of the story for you to be taken seriously. - Why does Nynaeve’s name appear misspelled while describing an incident involving Elayne? Nynaeve was there for part of the time, but she’s sent off on an errand, and is not present during the nightmare captivity incident. Also, Elayne is not at all in charge, which is the problem, since she’s the only one with expertise. - There is no spite in Elayne toward the Aes Sedai, although there is some mild frustration that they are not listening to her. It has nothing to do with her character or anything in the future, as she will never interact with this group of Aes Sedai after this book, but will have positive relations with all future non-Black sisters with whom she deals. - Actually, Nynaeve & Elayne are worried that they WILL rejoin the Tower, because the rebel leaders’ assurances to the contrary are very vague. It is this concern that motivates their search in the World of Dreams. And Elayne was not eavesdropping, that was a solo project by Nynaeve. - Nynaeve did not go visit Logain to Heal him “at this point” relative to their discovery of the Bowl of the Winds. It’s actually some time later, when her punishments for back-talking the Aes Sedai who won’t do anything about the Bowl have made her angry enough to channel. - We do not “cut to Rand for the first time” after Nynaeve Heals severing. Rand was in the opening chapter of the books, and he was not demonstrating his fighting skills for the nobles, he was practicing and they came to watch and kiss his butt. - “This comes into play later” suggests that Rand is right, but in fact, being able to use a sword while he is shielded doesn’t do anything to help him, just allows him to kill people, which in turn makes his captors angry at him, and gives them an excuse to abuse him worse. Bashere was right. Anyone who can shield a channeler is someone who can channel themselves, which means a sword is going to be pretty useless against them. - Daniel needs to re-think his use of the phrase “at this point” because he frequently uses it to describe events happening at points completely unrelated to the actual chronology. Mazram Taim does not arrive when Rand is having his worst Lew Therin fit to date, in fact, his arrival and attitude and gift to Rand provoke that worst fit yet. - Rand does not throw the Aes Sedai against the wall, he just shields them. - “..can only be seen as an army…” Taim is actually recruiting soldiers for an army, which will later be called the Legion of the Dragon, and he just skims off the men who can channel for the Black Tower. - Rand does not put Berelain in charge in response to the Andoran nobles’ recalcitrance, since he puts her in charge of Cairhien. And he did that before this book, since she is in charge when he first visits Cairhien and breaks Daniel’s poor widdle bwain. - Shadowspawn cannot pass through gateways, because they are not real people, they were artificially made by channelers, and the alterations to the Pattern involved in creating gateways disrupts their life functions so they die. This is not just a plot device, we see the good guys weaponized this weakness by using gateways to kill them in large numbers.

i loved the shit out of this book, and the ending was spectacular except for my one complaint about the book. during the climax i was enraptured, but as the epilogue was wrapping up i realized we kind of forgot to finish part of the story? why didnt we see the girls and matt get the bowl? i could have sworn i fell asleep with the audiobook going as i slept but i went back and saw that we just didnt get the conclusion of that. im still on my first read through so maybe the reason for tying that up in the next book is apparent, but when the book finished i just felt confused on why an entire plot line was just left hanging.

@Gunleaver
@Gunleaver 4 жыл бұрын
The Lord of Chaos is not explained, but in the wrold-building book it is explained that at one particular festival, they pick out some lowly person to elevate and preside over the festival as the "Lord of Chaos" and everyone has fun pretending he's in charge and obeying his ridiculous orders. Then the next day everything goes back to normal. This book has a recurring theme of inversion and reversals of power dynamics. Egwene is raised to be Amyrlin, as a mere figurehead. Mat is heading out to take command of a decoy army. People think Mat is a mere figurehead, when he's actually Rand's most trusted general and the greatest military mind in the world. We meet King Ailron, who doesn't have any real power, as the Children of the Light control his country, and Queen Tylin, who freely admits she has to let other powers walk all over her because she doesn't even have full control over her own city. Berelain, despite being leader of smallest and weakest country in the world, is put in charge of ruling a great nation. Perrin claims he isn't a real lord, while his father-in-law points out that great noble families rise and fall all the time. At the beginning of the book Mazrim Taim is a refugee and a captive, and by the end, he is making Aes Sedai kneel. We see a Queen, a Forsaken and the Dragon Reborn all captives at some point in the book, and Siuan & Leane going from being outcasts, back to full sisterhood. One of the ways Rand subtly demonstrates his power to the Andoran nobles is by using Bashere, a great general, a triple lord and uncle to a queen, as a butler. We learn that Pedron Nial's spymaster is an idiot who doesn't even realize he's a dupe and the real spymaster is his secretary. On and on, we see in the book instances of the great and mighty brought low and the outcast or lowest raised high. 'Lord of Chaos' isn't really a particular character, so much as a concept that keeps coming up throughout the book.

Corrections pt 2, from 11:00 to the end: - Rand does not laugh off the Tower’s bribe, he pretends to be interested so the Aes Sedai will keep trying to persuade him and he can find out more information from them. - The zoom-in suggests that raising Egwene is a surprise, when in fact it has been foreshadowed since book 4. Egwene also does not “agree” to do it, she is not given a choice in the matter. - Rand had not been building his relationship with Aviendha, he had been actively avoiding her and when she was in his company, he suppressed his feelings and reaction to her until she got freaked out and left. He is not sad she left, he is glad, even though he finds himself missing her. That is why he’s glad she’s gone, because he does not want anything to happen to her, like the lightning trap of Rahvin’s that killed her. - Mat does not take his army to Ebou Dar, he leaves it behind to follow Egwene’s group in order to protect her. - The Maidens never figure out what’s going on with Rand’s captivity, Berelain does. One of the Maidens overhears her discussing her hypothesis with Perrin & Dobraine, loses her shit and sends for the Aiel leadership. - The Aes Sedai take Rand out of the chest every night when they make camp. - The Aes Sedai do NOT torture Min to mess with Rand, they punish her for trying to intervene in their “discipline” of Rand. Rand flips out when she sees them do it. Because it does not happen as Daniel describes, the incident does NOT, in fact, show you anything about the Aes Sedai. - The Shaido’s deal was not to escort the Aes Sedai, it was to serve as a military distraction in Cairhien, to prevent large numbers of troops from following them to rescue Rand, and it works. There is also a more secret codicil for the Shaido to assassinate Gawyn and most of his private band of troops. - Aiel are totally known for retreats, because they don’t conquer. Eventually the Aiel always stop fighting and go home. Even when they totally conquer a settlement, they only loot the acceptable portion of the wealth and take it back home. - It seems very weird in a summary, to describe a quote as saying “Rand, one day I will confront you over what you’ve done” when the work you are summarizing has the quote as “al’Thor, one day I will see you dead.” Someone tell Daniel that summaries are supposed to be SHORTER than what they are summarizing. - Rand does NOT force the Tower embassy to swear to him, he only make the rebels swear. The rebels never object that what he’s doing is wrong. Instead, they are trying to claim credit for his rescue when he interrupts to point out that they violated the terms of how many sisters were allowed to approach him, so they have to swear fealty or he will treat them like the Tower sisters. He never threatens them with any punishments or even implies anything, just that for approaching him with more sisters than he was comfortable facing, they were going to be treated the same as the women who assaulted him and violated his person. It’s actually a very reasonable position, unless your stance is that no Aes Sedai should ever face consequences for actions against anyone outside the Tower. - The “massive number” of their members who swear fealty is nine. Out of almost 1,000. So less than .1%, and a single digit figure, is what Daniel Greene considers a massive number. - Egwene does not free Logain out of compassion. She does it to prevent the Hall from taking action without her approval. I don’t know what the compassion is supposed to be. It’s not very compassionate toward Rand, since Logain tried to usurp his title, and is his most recalcitrant follower who has not actually sworn to the Shadow. Logain is a war criminal and the WoT equivalent of a terrorist, who has never shown a moment’s regret or repentance, has been spending his days in Salidar happily slandering the Amyrlin Seat and White Tower with total lies, so compassion for him is pretty misguided, and it is something like criminal negligence that they just let this guy run free, especially when Egwene & Siuan know about the lies, so they know what a shitty human being he is. And they are just going to trust that Logain is going to go right to the Black Tower, with no detours for war crimes or whatever else he might get up to unsupervised, and they are also going to assume he is not going to go insane before he gets in touch with people who can stop him from hurting innocents. All because it is politically convenient for Egwene. By freeing Logain, she is actually guilty of the thing Siuan arranged for Elaida to be falsely accused of doing! - The Egwene and Logain incident was actually earlier in the book. The “secret epilogue” is Aran’gar freeing Moghedian and Egwene going to her tent to discover she’s gone.
