The ‘Let's Take A Trip To Melbourne’ 1934 song was written by Jack O'Hagan and sung by Clement Q William and topped the hit parade in 1935.

Great video!!! These were the tuff years. Especially with the depression going on.

Loved it, brilliant. Mum and dad were in their 20s then. Great to see how life was like back then when they were young ❤️

I am totally jelly of the people riding on that fully open tram 2:49. Riding around through Melbourne like that on a nice summer night would of been simply stellar.

Nice to see some colour footage of a cable tram in action. Those trams hauled by an underground cable would have been so much quieter than the electric trams.

Brings back great memories, lived on a farm as a kid growing up , Mum was a city girl and every summer holidays would go to Melbourne to stay with my grandparents. It was magic.

My mum sitting under the Princes Bridge with another girl and 2 American Army guys passing around a bottle of whiskey. That was one story she told me. I think that she ended up very sick. 🥴🥴

The nostalgia fills my heart looking at Melbourne during those glorious years Gezza! I had some excitement thinking there'd be a glimpse of the 2nd Fish Market, examining almost every frame... But "no dice" ☹️ Love you work Bloke!

Back then the Spencer Flinders Fish market was the more industrial part of Melbourne, so got less coverage.

A glimpse of the fish market around 8:50 in this vid from the railway viaduct. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYa4aKaNgdWLgNE Might be others too. Was used in a road safety film during demolition of the Fish Market.

@@johnd8892 Thank you John, Ive seen that footage & it only shows the cold storage (Spencer Street bridge area). Agreed it was more industrial, but the Flinders Street frontage was clerical. I've been hassling Geeza about more footage... If you have any film or know of other links, please let me know! Thank you.

@@Gezza1967 lots of still photos in earlier years. Many were Online until the Photobucket upheaval lots people efforts putting the together. About 30 pages of photos and discussion were on a railway discussion forum until a host upheaval lost the all and many others. I think lots came from the state library, but not the easiest site to find photos in. Towards the end the whole thing became unsafe due to weak foundations in Yarra mud crap soils. Melbourne City Council did not provide good enough foundations. Surprise surprise. Was also getting too small for future fish demands. Lots of objections to the smells. My father crashed his Indian motorcycle on the oily fish waste on the roads, so also pleased to see it go.

1940's. Already a huge built-out city of incredible architecture and infrastructure. Nothing adds up given the timeline we are told about the founding of Australia and settlement of cities like Melbourne and Sydney. They seem to have pre-existed. Some strange history here.

I reckon that's probably the only COLOUR footage of a Melbourne cable tram in operation, can anyone prove me wrong?

Imagine if those 'open' trams made a come back to the CBD in 2021 !!!!! Hint hint..come on Yarra Trams, you can do it somehow! That would be absolutely the biggest tourist thrill...im pretty sure they have open trams in San Francisco still too...no reason why we can't have them back and get them working the City Circle route.
