A new series of vids where I review current model manufacturing companies, their noticeable key features, what they do really well, what is not so good, & subjects they should maybe consider in the future...First: Britains modelling pride, (the Hornby-owned) AIRFIX, Surely one of the most-improved model manufacturers out there?
I started buildingAirfix kits over 50 years ago, so thought we should start with them...
Regarding my grumbles about the Hornby TV programme's rather disproportionate obsession with trains, - it reminds me of this amusing clip from the 'A Few Dollars More' movie:
• For A Few Dollars More...
😂
Next Time: REVELL...🫣
Coming soon: Tamiya, ICM, Takom, GWH, etc.

Airfix at the moment are passionate about the kits they are producing. They also seem to care about how the kit can be built by the modeller. There is also a decent balance between detail, complexity, and cost. Finally, Airfix don't seem to be tainted by the greed of the Hornby model railway brand.

Peter, you hit the nail on the head with the line "people tend to behave like sheep" I love it - it's often what I say. After all, all you have to do is just look at the news and see that people love to copy each other nowdays and can't think for themsleves.

I started this hobby with Airfix kits and have rediscovered them over the last two years since I have got back into aircraft modeling after an absence from that aspect of the hobby for some 20 years. I would say if you are a an aircraft modeler they are a good choice, especially some of their newer and updated subjects. It's also very nostalgic to see the rereleases of the older kits as "Vintage Classics" because they bring back a lot of childhood memories.

Definitely, we need the stands back - the old transparent ones - they only cost pence to add but the value is more than the raw price of the stands.

The current Airfix can seem to do no wrong. However, they need to guard against making their kits too complex and too expensive for the average modeler.

Also need to expand the range of subjects...just look at what they used to produce back in the day compared to today....as peter said a new tooling Jaguar and Tornado areva must....also remember when they used to do a Viggen,Draken,F-14/15/16/18,F-5,mig -21/23/29,Mirage F-1,mirage 111 and as for helicopters remember they did a lynx (army and navy versions) ,Gazelle,Scout,Wasp,Chinook,Wessex,Puma etc.need i go on

Really interesting, can’t wait for the others in the series. I recently finished the Tamiya 1/48 F4UD Corsair and was disappointed by the fact Tamiya assumed the modeller wanted the aircraft “wheels down”, despite the box art showing it flying. With my limited skills I made it with wheels up and did some surgery on the pilot and placed him inside. It’s actually turned out pretty well, so I totally agree with your point about the stands and pilots. Great channel, already subbed

I built my first Airfix kit around 56 years ago so have a certain affinity to the brand, as that was really the only brand that was available at the time. I agree that Airfix have stepped up to the next level regarding Quality of moulding, decals and the instructions in recent years. I have no idea how their marketing research reaches a decision on which new kits to release, but I guess there is some science to it. These days I buy my kits by subject rather than manufacturer, but have to agree Tamiya are the benchmark in terms of moulding quality. Excellent video, thank you.

Made 1/72 scale Airfix models as a boy, when they came in bags 😂 - bought with pocket money from Bateson's in Blackpool (anyone remember them). Started making Tamiya tanks with my son (not really interested), and now have a 1/48 scale Mosquito I really need to finish 😂. Worked in aerospace in the UK, so have a Tornado kit waiting in the wings, and might spring for the F35B (if I save my pennies). The Airfix Buccaneer is a definite possibility, from my time visiting Brough. A good Jaguar would also be interesting !!! Have of course visited Cosford, and will again later this year - highly recommended !!!

From my perspective Matchbox and Airfix were since the beginning like Beatles and Stones. Loved the Beatles, but world without the Stones wouldn't be completed. Living behind the Iron Curtain wasn't easy for a young modeller in the 70ties and 80ties. Usually you had to buy the kit which was available on the Black Market. Humbrol was a luxury, that is why in the beginning I preferred more colourful Matchbox, with better clear parts, and stunningly beautiful artworks. Years later I am professional modeller, creating models and figures in 3D, printing and painting them for my clients, but always remember about my good old friends - Matchbox and Airfix, which gave me the fundamentals and passion for our great hobby. It is good to have Airfix still on Market.

I remember some of my first Airfix kits. The Stirling, which my Grandfather bought me for A$5 in ~1970. At that time, in Australian currency, the price in A$ matched the Series number. The Stirling was nice - a bit of detail under that greenhouse. I have recently bought two classics - the Higgins Boat and the LCT in 1/76 - have both made up into nice models. And then the recently released 1/48 aircraft.

Another great video, Peter! I've got about 60 Airfix kits in the stash that vary from their 1970s kits up to nowadays. They have improved considerably over the years, and I hope they continue on that trajectory. I've had problems getting replacement parts for a kit I bought here in the US, which I find strange, as I'm told they have an excellent customer service. The kit is currently being produced by them, so I can't understand what the problem is. I'm using their recommended channels, but have not yet had a response from them.

Peter, you talk a lot of sense and it is important to not be tribal. I am relatively new returner to modelling and I made some rookie mistakes e:g buying Tamiya's Sea Harrier and Revell's F4U Corsair. If I had listened to you and other considered modellers I would have known a little better. However we all learn from our mistakes and I am fascinated by the way that you think and feel about kits and the companies that make them. Carry on my friend!!

Thank you Peter for this. A couple of things. One model specific and the other isn’t. We had a hobby shop here in Toronto and I got on very well with Dave🤫. He told me ,as a man in the business, that model companies could make every version of a tiger, Sherman, 109, spitfire, and no matter what, they would be his big sellers. He said he couldn’t stock enough Tamiya Tiger versions. Great for people new to the hobby. As an aside about being a Tamiya fanboy, I just finished a Tamiya 1/16th full option Centurion tank and posted pictures on line and wouldn’t you know it that Simon Dunstan posted that the markings I put on never existed in Korean for a Cent Mk3. There you go Tamiya has had the same decal sheet from their Early Cent releases in the 70’s the 1/25th and now 1/16th🤷🏻. Model companies will generally make something that will sale. My first kit back in the late 60’s was a Mk1 male WW1 tank, from Airfix in the plastic bag with the cardboard top part stapled to it, like Frog and yes I’m that old. The Hobby shop that I bought my first kit from still is here in Toronto and that is Johns photo hobby, shout out to John, Heide and Roger. I won’t go on about modeling. But agree with your synopsis here. Now about the wine. As a young man in the late 60’s and early 70’s we had a show in Canada called” The Galloping Gourmet “ . the host was Graham Kerr and he always had a glass of wine or poured a refill as he went to a commercial break. I became a chef because of this show because he made cooking look like fun. Any way keep it up mate as I have gone on to long.

I think since then, whilst still making some odd decisions, they've really turned things around. New moulds, better instructions and decals too, rereleasing older moulds but not glossing over that like Revell. They're not perfect, but I really feel they're going in the right direction, and from strength to strength.

The Spitfire kits , of whatever scale (hopefully) are profitable and cash cows for Airfix. They therefore should be able to subsidise the less popular (and less profitable) projects such as the 1/48 Gannet from the proceeds generated by the popular kits. I think it's a good policy - as long as they can afford to do this. When Hornby first took over Airfix in 2006, they did get quite a bit of criticism for releasing some of their ancient kits in the new red boxes with no indication that they were old models. I'm actually in the middle of building the red box release of their 1968 Handley Page Hampden. I think the current policy of releasing their old kits as Vintage Classics is excellent as it does indicate that the kit will be an older moulding and, with classic box art, will certainly appeal to those of a certain age. Although you hinted that you were not enamoured with a certain company who are still releasing old kits in new boxes (I can guess who you mean). Don't forget that they also went through a period, about 20 years ago, of releasing old kits with their original box art and labelling them as "Classics". They seem to have dropped that policy now but I am sure Airfix were partially inspired by this. It's also honest - which I admire.

The Short Stirling by Airfix was a nice kit, it had a few rags, but it was a nice kit. I couldn't get my head around how it had such a short wingspan though, at first I thought it was a manufacturing fault, but it did have short wings in comparison to the length of its fuselage.
@davidshanahan5134
@davidshanahan5134 11 ай бұрын
They made the wings short so it would fit into a standard hanger. Then they had to make the wing chord very deep so it had enough wing area. This made it have a very low ceiling - could barely get over the Italian Alps with a bomb load, and also vulnerable to flak and night fighters. Of course during the war most bombers never got into a hanger so the design was compromised for nothing.

Some great analysis which hopefully the new Hornby CEO will see. Agree on the social media. There was a recent one on the railway kits range they sold to Dapol and the presenter asked if they should be reintroduced! This must have done more harm than good! By the way, it was Palitoy in the early 80s who introduced those naff model kit photographs on random maps and blue prints. Humbrol continued this for about a year or so but soon reintroduced box art. I do wonder if they should use an older Airfix logo for the Vintage Classics range. The Palitoy era logo they use for the range doesn't look vintage enough to me!

Don't normally comment as I'd normally just be repeating what everyone else has said but this was especially enjoyable so here goes. Couple of small negatives to start and one that may be out of your control. This was a long video but didn't seem like it because it was so engaging. However I had adverts with no let up every 5mins for the entire thing which on a couple of occasions I was tempted to turn off. Also a section where quite a bit of negativity came across at once. All valid points but maybe should have been dispersed throughout. 100% agree with the Airfix classics comment. They've done it right, nostalgia sells and you know what you're getting before you open the box. Cartograf decals are a touch of genius and in a couple of cases they've redone the clear parts, plus you get some unusual subjects. Never considered your point about the Gannet, I jumped on it because of the unusual subject and it's been massively popular on pre order but I never considered that a year from now all us older modellers will have one and the longevity in the future may be limited. I'm on board with you about crew figures. Never used to bother but I'm coming round to the idea that they add extra interest, especially for aircraft in flight. I want to do the Lancaster with crew outside the aircraft but options are limited. I bought some of the, "nostalgia" stands you mentioned and mine were fine so maybe you were unlucky. Looking forward to your Revell slot, I imagine the 1/32 Hornet will get a mention. Finally I agree with Phil Flory that you should build one of your Hallowed Matchbox kits😄, when I was a kid they were the best affordable option and I was drawn to the vehicles especially because of the included dioramas, Airfix take note. Brilliant video, can't wait for the next 👍👍👍👍👍

🤔Peter maybe Gannet not as widely used as the Jaguar. Gannet, British Navy, Australian Navy, German Navy, Indonesian Navy three out of four big operators and modelling areas. Jaguar Britain, France, Oman, Ecuador, Nigeria, so one more operator but only two big modelling areas. I think your argument falls down in my opinion. But as you know I’m happy for once a manufacturer is targeting Fleet Air Arm over RAF as they have been the silent cousins for too long. Great broadcast, I always enjoy your opinions and keep up the excellent work.

Yea....I was a bit anti Airfix for many reasons but being British, I have to say I am mightily impressed (as a returning modeller) with their current standards. Their 1:48 tiger moth is a beauty as no doubt are many others. The Gannet? Odd yes, but Naval aviation and the older aircraft in particular have a big following. How the hell do you think we Army aviation bods feel? Classics or their 1:48 scale Lynx (beauty but an opportunity missed) if you can get one. Perhaps using the income from the gimmies will allow them to appeal to the more obscure (but important) British types. Westland Scout or Wasp one day? Beaver perhaps.....Austers? A Lynx 5 or 1GT from Granby? PS.....I want an Airfix Wellington even more now....and me....exe Army....WTF😂

Hey not being a Peter Oxley fan boy here coz he got slated for his last lawn mower video 😂😂, but I have to agree.... the stands are utter crap and a new range of decent stands are required (Airfix we would pay more for a better stand). Also pilots.... yes, yes, yes! Pilots are a defo consideration. Dioramas not so hung up on but they would be nice. As for modern jets I definitely agree. I've had to buy (all 1/72) Hasegawa Jaguar, Eduard Tornado and Italeri Typhoon because Airfix (my preferred brand most of the time) do not have decent new toolings of the mentioned subjects. Love the rebranded classics range and the new tool kits of the last 10 years have been pretty awesome. Although saying that I have had multiple quality control issues like having a duplicate sprue but missing another like 2x A, 1x B but sprue C missing. Also badly moulded parts ( exhaust manifold on 1/72 Hawker Tempest). Looking forward to the ferret scout car and hoping for a 1/72 new tool Javelin 🤞. Keep up the good work both Airfix and Peter 👍👍

Difficult to make ang interesting discussion when the hobby is now such a diverse sprawl of unique modellers. Your brave to stick your head above the parapet. I'm an ancient modeller that oddly buys a kit then makes it. No stash no work station and will purposely go for say a 1966 Revell kit and love turning it around . Weird eh! So, no I don't agree with all your opinions, but who'd want to just live in an echo chamber. Well done Peter. 👍

I started with Matchbox models they were cheap and simple to build. Airfix were more expensive and I always saw them as more advanced in detail. Coming back to modeling after many years Matchbox is no more sadly. But the Airfix brand was my go to. The only brand I knew tbh. I have built a few Tamiya and was very impressed by the quality and detail. It has a solid and well earned reputation. I agree Airfix does have a few niggles, but overall the kits I have built are good quality, and sometimes require a bit of problem solving. But for me that is part of the fun of modeling. As Peter said his views are subjective but I feel they are fair and constructive opening up debate. We all have our views lets discuss them in a respectful manner. Great video Peter as always. Excellent video Peter. Some well reasoned arguments there especially around the current trend for short videos that don’t add anything (a detriment to their excellent marketing of kit releases), and I agree about diorama choices and storytelling in model making. It’s a big deal at the moment - think back to the one model everyone seemed to be talking about at Telford last year with its giant water burst. Instead of fairly random tie-ins with tea and coffee makers, why not partner with someone like Games Workshop who know how to make figures, or Woodland Scenics for a range of diorama materials?

Airfix know the Gannet won't be a huge seller; it's a niche luxury that they're able to indulge a keen fanbase with because they also do big bucks Spitfires. It's a tricky balance for them and they won't appeal to everyone all of the time, but I'm really glad they're still around producing some wonderful kits. A Jaguar will be coming, it's only a matter of time. Also, don't write-off the Gannet's international appeal. The American chaps who present the Model Geeks podcast had been urging Airfix to make one not long before it was announced. The "they don't do anything that's still in service" thing is just a myth. The recent 1/72 F-35 proves that.

I've had a good mix of good and great recent airfix kits. I think that your focus was on the premium 1:48 scale kits but remember that the smaller 1:72 scale kits and starters are a big market share for them. Can look at price point of these and how they have stretched over last few years. Same tool typically 1/3 more costly now than recent releases. Sea fury case in point.

I think the danger is it is always hard to step back and look truely objectively. There's been remarkably few total failures of late, with the exception of wingnut wings. What was notable was how long it has taken to clear the built stock. What concerns me more with Airfix is the slash and burn sales to clear stock, as , for me , it removes the shine of buying something "box fresh" , as they are supposedly a "big player", but actually I'm not so sure in global sales terms. I like the way they have designed kits all the way through, as you say with some of the Chinese kits, you are much more likely to open the box - shut it and then pick an airfix from the stash. With new kits I do not know the answer, but the older buyers are literally dying off, and it will come to the point eventually where a spitfire will not automatically guarantee the cash machine to ring. Many WW2 aircraft already would be considered too risky now for a new high production tool, such as the Blackburn Botha or the Martin Maryland. I was really lucky to sell a 50s classic car recently, the youth now clamour for 90's "classics", which makes me think that airfix chose the "wrong" land rover, a 90's defender, freelander or discovery might have done bettter.

Enjoyable video and some interesting points too. I agree with the social media aspect, but likewise, I'm not much of a social media type either. I'm not sure who or what demographic they are aiming those videos at and they do seem a little pointless. Agreed on the Jaguar. It's quite clear that a decent Jaguar is something a lot of modellers want...me included and I build very few jets. The 1/24 Spitfire IX. Personally, and I know I'm in a minority here, I love building 1/24. I've got two of the old 109Es on the go at the moment. Still a great blank canvas for some super detailing and scratch building. I have a Tamiya 1/32 Mk IX and XVI too and despite both being awesome kits, they aren't a 1/24 scale Spitifre IX and Airfix delivered there. There's already some fantastic conversions for a 1/24 Mk XIVe lowback and fingers crossed, I'll get my modelling holy grail, a 1/24 conversion for a Griffon Mk XIVe. It's a kit that holds a lot of possibilities for us larger scale nuts. The armour guys seem very excited about the Ferret, so I think think that must have been a good shout, and as for the Bond Bug? Well, that kit hasn't been released since 1975. It was fetching ridiculous prices second hand, so I think it was a good choice for the "Classics" range. I bought a couple and due to it only having been released twice before, the moulds are in lovely shape and the kit is very crisp and fits a treat. I really hope we see some more of those 1/32 cars as I would sell granny for the Maxi, Marina, MG 1100, Mini etc. I applaud Airfix for the classic range. It's up front about what you get (although us old farts already know that), we get fab new decals, and in a few cases, re-tooled transparencies....the Achilles heel of a lot of these old kits. We also don't have to pay silly prices for the originals either. Win win! Matchbox "Classics" range anyone? Sorry for the long ramble. Keep up the good work Sir!

What about a 1/48th scale Sea Harrier.?. Its Fleet Air Arm which as you said is Airfix's latest favorite subject and no longer in service so it fits the bill. I know they have a 1/72nd kit but an upscale kit with better detail and either a Falklands era one or more recent conflict such as the NATO Bosnian and Yugoslavia operations. It was also operated by India so there's another option for markings. There aren't any really good 1/48th scale Sea Harrier kits on the market so it will be a good seller. Could also have some great box art...dogfighting Argentine Mirages or Sharkey Ward shooting down a Pucara..

I'm of similar age to Peter and I believe our experiences in the early 70s were also similar. I hated Airfix after I built a kit of theirs which had wing halves that were so thin they just warped and melted after I applied the cement, and the rivets just looked huge. Thankfully along came Matchbox, which I absolutely loved. I lost interest in model making sometime around '79, or early 80s. A decade or two later when I became vaguely interested again I remember going in to Modelzone and being utterly bemused that there were no Matchbox kits at all! Anyway, it's good to see that Airfix models ARE actually good (now) after all. I just need to finish redecorating our spare room and then I'll get back in to the hobby properly!

Some older AIrfix kits were (and still are) excellent - especially those produced around the mid 1970s. Your experience of melting the plastic was most likely down to your over youthful over enthusiasm in applying the poly cement (we've all done it). Thee recently re-released Lockheed P-80 is a lovely little kit.

So I guess at least in the UK and in Germany, they will sell well. Airfix are definitely making progress, judged by recent releases, but still way behind not just Tamiya, but lots of other much smaller companies. The Hunter is a case in point, latest release is retail of £46. The cockpit is bare, the seat poor and lets not talk about the surfact detail. Im currently building the Buccaneer, which I really like, but still its a bit average. ICM, Eduard, Wingsy all make a much better al round product, judged by fit, detail and come with masks, etch etc. The saving grace for Airfix is subject choice, so I have the Seaking and Gannet on order, and 100% agree they should/MUST do a Jag and I will get the RAF Buccaneer too.

Just on your point about being disappointed with the choice of a Spitfire Mk.IX by Airfix for their latest 1/24th release - I sort of agree. Yes they have to be commercial so their new landmark kit was probably always going to be a Spitfire, but a Mk.V would have been more interesting. Not clashing with the Tamiya Mk.IX, more desert and Malta schemes and Trop additions and a Seafire F Mk.III version. It was the most produced Mark. Re the Gannet, maybe Airfix feel that for say every 9 popular subjects, that funds a 'fringe British' subject that no one else is likely to pick up? Btw Peter, I give you a 10/10 for your channel.
